The Well is Running Empty

I am sometimes astonished at the way educated people behave. I am further dumbfounded at the way politicians behave. They enforce rules and break them or have their cronies break them. The only people they are hurting are the hardworking taxpayers who provide the sugar to fatten their bellies. In many instances, the politicians are educated people who were voted in by a set of educated people as well.

Throughout the world, we are facing layoffs and cutbacks. However, the politicians never cut back on themselves. Their salaries remain the same and also their perks and their cronies’ too. Many of the persons who were elected to run the governments in the Caribbean are greedy, wicked and nonchalant when it comes to the publics’ purse.

I find that in many of the nations, there are an excess amount of representatives but yet the people’s cries are not answered. In times of crisis, we see large contract given to colleagues. On the other hand, in one territory, a school had to be closed and in another, the teachers ask parents to bring toilet paper and paper towel to school because the relevant department had not sent the requested items as per their mandate.

We see persons heading departments going on wild spending sprees and there is no one to stop them because they feel that they are invincible holding on the treasury’s purse strings. For too long, there has been a lack of accountability in our countries. There are no watchdogs to keep an eye on the finances and to curb the corruption. I honestly feel that many of these officials are fully aware of the many underhanded things happening in their countries but they cast a blind eye. It seems like no matter who we elect, it is always the same game.

I just feel that many of the leaders are not serious enough to make the tough decisions from early on. We simply have to put measures in place and get our countries back in order. All the unnecessary contracts should be halted and never revived. The over-bloated cost of construction puts would-be homeowners in a spot where they can never get a home. Something needs to be done because the people are suffering. We are threatened on our streets, victimized on the job, robbed in the daylight and our daughters are prostituting themselves for a snort of cocaine just to take them to a place where there are no worries – until the high wears off.

We shall continue to pray but with God’s guidance, POSITIVE action will have to be taken on all levels to get our place back in shape.

POEM: New Sight

Until we wake up and realize
that the climbing and mounting size
of the criminal assizes
is all related to the love that was lost
how we've been living at any cost
when we cry when another brother gets shot
then we are truly like ostriches
living in pretense on false wishes
holding our lives together with broken stitches
we must arise and do different
live right and to the wicked – be resistant
by striving to be good citizens
we need to have a universal mindset
and instill in our children good concepts
so it means some of us may have to reset
the way we think and perform
cause life is no longer just the norm
we have to be prepared to weather the storm
cause life was not meant to be easy
some days the load will get heavy
but we have to remain steady
be on alert and stay ready

The Micromanager?

Is micromanagement a sickness? It is a symptom of having a large ego? It is a passion for the power hungry? I simply can not fathom why anyone would want to control so many things. If President Obama applied that type of behavior - trying to run every state and every facet of the central government, he would not get anywhere. I think that is why the 'system' is designed with several layers of management, castes, hierarchies etc.

I find it absolutely annoying watching a micromanager in play. This person has no trust for others. You can micromange your home but that still can alienate your family members. So imagine a workforce of 30 people? The manager can not dabble into every process - he will get burned out. However, he should not totally ignore any employee or issue. However, empower supervisors and allow them to function.

I am not the best person or manager but I truly feel that micromanagement is not the best management philosophy. I'll still with that opinion too!

Ongoing Projects

I enjoy country life! It is calm and cool and the children love it. The water is very cold in the morning but the heater will be on soon. A cat visits me from time to time and people say that is good luck. Cows visit me too because I need to get my yard to get manicured.

I have a lot to do including getting a little farm started but I will take projects in stride. I still have the inside of the house to do some work on too. I am looking at other freelance projects as well. I enjoy that kind of work! I am hoping that one day, I can freelance and have that cover my bills - freelancing and farming that is!

Working full time is great too but the office politics gets a little too annoying for me. I've never wanted to be a boss but I would like to be more fulfilled. I will keep my eyes open and my mind ticking.

Keep the faith and the keep your head on!

POEM: Seven Deadly Sins

Greed is nasty and makes you crafty
Sloth is slackness and most times is tacky
Wrath is like a deadly cancer
And envy only fuels disaster
Pride makes for a bad attitude
And lust upturns your aptitude
Gluttony makes you scrape the bottom of the barrel
These sins will make your life a nasty spill
There are called deadly sins for a reason
But in life, good and bad come in their seasons
So try your best to be your best
Never strive for anything less
Love your neighbor and defend your friends
Let your light shine and your love transcend

Moving again

Since I have returned to the British Virgin Islands, I have moved five times. I love the experience of living in different places. Now I am moving back to the first place I live when I first came here and it is truly exciting. It has been a hard journey - one which I will chronicle more in the near future. I am blessed to have met so many nice people and hope that I can be as nice as they have been to me.

I have to shout out to a special young lady, Christia, who has truly been a 'big sister' to my kids. The blog may be down for the weekend as we finalize the moving in and get all the utilities transferred but as I get a chance I will at least post some short poem or quick thoughts.

Old & Young Parents - Teach Your Children Values

I see young people from 16 to 20 having babies and I wonder how they survive. I am in my mid 30s and sometimes it can be really stressful and frustrating being a parent. Today the pressure is harder and money is tighter. I think the young ladies today have a tougher job than a 17 year old 20 or 10 years ago. What is easy today is that we don't so easily attach a stigma to a teenage parent. In 1990 or 1999 and much earlier, we might have but today some of those young parents stand strong and take their role seriously.

Today youth have a harder time finding a job and have so much negative to influence them. We have to work hard to show them doing the right thing is the best thing. I in no way look down on any young parent. Instead they need nurturing and love and they at the same time must be willing to listen and learn. I am no expert but I do try my best to have my children disciplined and full of manners. I also impress upon them the importance of God, completing tasks and of course their education.

While I may give them the moral fiber they need, it is still their decision if they want to follow bad company. I can only encourage and try to seperate and for sure I will put the best effort forward to do this.

Young parents, I encourage you to speak to the elders around you. I admonish you to pay attention to your child's education and take a full interest and role in their school. Lastly, tell your offsprings about God and spend time with them.

Wise and Giving for the Holidays

I want to remind everyone that you can give little or simple things to the ones you love for Chirstmas. There is no need to make yourself broke trying to catch up with the JayZs, Knowles or the Smiths. We need to be honest with ourselves and deal with priorities. If all you can give is a pot of basil or thyme, then do so. Why try to give a ring or an expensive perfume set when that leaves you undone?

Visit someone, call them, make amends or go to church with someone. Be smart and safe this holiday season. Most of all be wise and giving - but give what you can afford.

Short Prayer for World Aids Day

Dear God,

We thank you for your blessings upon us. We pray for strength and healing for those who suffer from HIV/AIDS that their lives can be enjoyed and their suffering minimized. We praise you for your mighty works and for inspiring the counsellors, caregivers, doctors and nurses who assist persons infected with this deadly virus. Heavenly Father, we also pray to you for humility and understanding that we may not judge or persecute these sufferers and instead accept them and pray for them. Dear Lord, we praise you for your continued mercies and seek to live your favor.

Amen

POEM: HIV is killing WE

HIV is killing WE
Come, my people, can’t you see
Think about how your life will be
If you are diagnosed with HIV
We’re singing to tell you to be wise
We’re asking for you to condomise
We’re praying that you’ll be abstinent
Please be faithful to your partner for good intent
HIV/AIDS affects both young and old
Just listen to some sad stories told
Of a pregnant woman plush and lovely
And then a baby born with HIV
My people, it’s time for you to listen
Protection and self control is what I’m wishing
Please don’t disregard my simple words
HIV is far too rampant in this world

Short Words for 11-30-2011

Raising children is not easy. It takes time and patience. I try but some days I get frustrated and yell at them. My children are nice and full of manners. They are each bright in their own way and are full of energy. I love them and would like to see the best for them. However, I know that while I can impart the knowledge that I have, it is still up to them to implement it.

Getting to Know Me

I know who I am and what I like. Many people struggle with knowing themselves and until they can truly become one with themselves, they won't know where to go. It hurts me to hear that young women are increasingly becoming involved in illegal drugs. That is truly hard to swallow.

I know that life is stressful right now and people barely want to help. I still feel that there are other ways to survive. There's a commercial for Allstate where the announcer mentions that someone is on a 'Ramen Noodle' diet. Three Ramen noodles are $1.05 in the BVI. If you can afford one can of vienna sausage that's still $0.90 or sardine or tuna fish, you can mix it up. Add one carrot, one tomato or some beets and it's even more colorful. We have to find ways to survive.

I think these problems go very deep. Drug abuse may stem from depression which could be caused by a host of issues. We have some way to seek help without turning to the bottle or the pill or the pipe. This is harder when there are children involved. People are getting more desperate and make life more uncomfortable for many of us. I see young men begging for $1.00 and this sickens me. However, I do not know the circumstance. It could be an untreated mental issue or an adverse reaction to a legal or illegal drug.

There's a lot of work for the leaders and community workers. However, we as a community have to teach our children right from wrong and instill solid values in them. If we do not intercede now for the little ones then there will be much more begging and getting high in the future.

POEM: As It Comes

piece of me
is broken
but the other half is good
although I may be soft-spoken
I may just be in a bad mood
while I stand with eyes open
my mind is closed to the world
I'm never the master's token
cause I will fight for the boys and girls
I may not be much in sight
but never underestimade a fighter
I have a vision to shin a light
that makes everyone's days brighter

POEM: Your Words

I'm posting
but not because I'm boasting
or enjoy roasting
but cause I've got mad love to share
to the world I care for
I want to inspire and uplift
find ways to solve rifts
cause that's what words are for
to lift, encourage or implore
so use yours today
to share something positive in what you say

Resting, Rising and Good Music...

Some people don't like to rise in the morning and some don't like to go to sleep. I think I am a mixture. I work well in the subconscious if I have a trip to take - I'll be sure to rise early then. Otherwise, I don't want to rise. I stay up some nights. Like tonight, I'll be up ironing.

I also have an article that I want to complete and I think it's time that I do it. I don't have deadlines and work on my own schedule with writing so I'm free to produce when I want. My full time job requires that I'm there as much as possible between the allotted hours and I try my best.

My kids don't like to go to sleep unless they are tired but somehow they rise early most days to ask where's breakfast.

As for tonight I have my least favorite chore to complete which is ironing. If I am in the mood, I may finish the article.

My playlist to get me in the ironing mood has been:
"Wake Up Everybody" by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes
"Do You Love What You Feel" by Chaka Khan & Rufus
"I Love Music" by The O'Jays
"Love Train" by The O'Jays
"For the Love of You" by Isley Brothers

I will take rest when it beckons and bid yo a good rest.

Not another joke or joker

I like to live on the lighter side. I enjoy a good joke or a good comedy. I don't think I'm funny but I think I could crack a good joke at least one a year. I would never try to be a comedian because my memory stinks and I know I would start to laugh before I share the punchline.

I could see me up there, "Your're so stupid.....hahahahahah, whew, hahahahahaha......you were asked how much is 2x2......o lord, hahahahaha, and you said (with tears rolling down the eyes) ......2!" I'm surely comedian. People would just laugh at my laughter.

I think it's important to smile and laugh. Some days are very dark and challenges can be daunting but try to find something to smile about. It may be a nice memory or you may need to pull a joke from the internet to get that smile release.

I for sure laugh everyday at something. I try not to laugh at 'somebody' but rather at 'something' they did. I know people laugh at me cause I'm a thrift store shopper or I rock my natural hair but I don't care. At least, I'm not a bother to them. I am smiling and moving forward with my life. So....take a "hahahaha....whew this one sweet...hehehehhe......hahahahah....." today!

The Oddities that Affect Us

People never do cease to amaze me. We can be cool yet calculating. Some are subtle yet devious. Others are serious while being pranksters. A few are just difficult and there are those who are just too easy.

We all have our funny ways and our off days but we still have to deal with each other. I see and experience a lot of nonsense when dealing with my fellow man. However, these last few days have brought me some news that has been surprising and unsettling. I can only pray for healing for all involved.

While we can not predict the future or the action of others, we must still proceed in life with hope and patience.

POEM: We are so confused

Is it me
or is it frighteningly dizzy
how we are living in a tizzy
going quickly to no destination
living like stocks in speculation
it's like we just don't care
even our brother, we won't spare
cause today, it's all about the paper
and building huge skyscrapers
we have forgotten about the community
and are living in disunity
heading fast to no avail
moving like yachts without sails
we have to bring back that brotherly love
not like when we sit from above
and look down on the ants below
and pretend like we don't know
that our people are in danger
and no it's not the strangers
but the people who are our neighbors
so it is me
we have to stop acting like we can't see
how tough life can be
so extend a hand to a friend
cause kindness should never come to an end
this means that both you and me
have to work in unity
it should be every individual's policy
to re-build and uplift the community

The BVI Elected New Leadership on November 7, 2011

On Monday, November 7, 2011, the people of the British Virgin Islands voted and made a change in the leadership of the country.

Monday, November 7, 2011 marked a new day for the people in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). They went to the polls which opened at 6AM and voted for the persons who they felt were worthy of leading their country. After several marathon hours of counting, the Virgin Islands Party was ousted as the people chose the National Democratic Party team to lead the country.

How the BVI Votes
The BVI elects representatives in nine electoral district seats and with four at-large territorial seats. The nine districts cover Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and all the islands in the territory. The territorial seats are chosen by all the registered voters of the country. There needs to be a majority of seven representatives to form the government and the other representatives would sit in the opposition. Any elected representative can be named Premier and be a member of the cabinet. The ruling party decides who will lead and the Ministers of Government namely for the Ministries of Finance and Tourism, Communication and Works, Natural Resources and Labour, Health and Social Development and Education and Culture.

Parties Contesting the Elections
In 2011, there were 43 candidates vying for seats in the 2nd House of Assembly. There were sixteen candidates aiming for the four at-large seats and 27 persons spread across the nine districts vying for seats. Among the 43 candidates, there were four parties, the incumbent Virgin Islands Party (VIP) with 13 candidates, the National Democratic Party (NDP) with 12 candidates, the People's Patriotic Alliance (PPA) with four candidates and the Party Of the People (POP) with one candidate. There were also 13 independent candidates of which 9 spread across the districts.

Winners of the 2011 BVI Elections
After voting concluded on November 7, counting started. Some districts were completed by 11PM but the at-large votes were not completed until around 11AM on Tuesday. Many people stayed up with counters, not just for moral support but because they truly wanted to know what the BVI's destiny would be.
  • First District: The constituents of the 1st District voted for the incumbent Honorable Andrew Fahie of the Virgin Islands Party over the independent candidate Preston Stoutt.
  • Second District: VIP's Honorable Alvin Christoper was once again victorious. He won over NDP's Claude Skelton-Cline and independents Allewine Smith and Leall Rhymer.
  • Third District: The Honorable Julian Fraser, a VIP incumbent, remained the 3rd District's representative as he narrowly won over NDP's Kevin Smith.
  • Fourth District: Honorable Vincent Scatliffe of the VIP was ousted by the NDP's Mark Vanterpool. Collin Scatliffe also competed for this district.
  • Fifth District: The fifth district voted for NDP's Delores Christopher over the VIP's incumbent, Hon. Elvis Harrigan.
  • Sixth District: The incumbent VIP's Hon. Omar Hodge was unseated after 32 years of representation by NDP's Alvera Maduro-Caines.
  • Seventh District: In the 7th District, Honorable Dr. Kedrick Pickering remains as the district representative. The constituents chose Dr. Pickering over VIP's Ronnie Lettsome and independent Allen Wheatley.
  • Eighth District: In the 8th District, Marlon Penn of the NDP stood victorious over VIP's incumbent Honorable Dancia Penn Q.C., the outgoing Deputy Premier and independents Nolan Davies and Bevis Sylvester.
  • Ninth District: In a close contest, the outgoing Premier, Honorable Ralph T. O'Neal of the VIP narrowly won over the NDP's candidate Hubert O'Neal. The other persons contesting this seat were independents Devon Osbourne, Samuel O'Neal and Laurie Rhymer.
  • At-Large Winners: The National Democratic Party secured all the At-Large seats with winners, the new Premier, Hon. Dr. Orlando Smith, Myron Walwyn, Archibald Christian and Ronnie Skelton. The VIP's At-Large candidates included incumbents Honorable Keith Flax, Honorable Irene Penn-O'Neal and Zoe Walcott-McMillan. The PPA had Shaina Smith, Natalio 'Sowande Uhuru' Wheatley, Elton Callwood and Khoy Smith. The independent candidates for the territorial votes were Eileene Baronville, Lionel Penn, Edmund Maduro and Bertrand Lettsome.

At the completion of the counting, the National Democratic Party secured nine of the thirteen seats and the Virgin Islands Party took four seats. The new Premier, Hon. Dr. Orlando Smith will be sworn shortly and his members of Cabinet who will also be the Ministers of government will be named in due course.

Welcome to the New 2011 NDP Government

Welcome to the Honorable Members of the 2nd House of Assembly in the British Virgin Islands:
1st Andrew Fahie - VIP
2nd Alvin Christoper - VIP
3rd Julian Fraser - VIP
4th Mark Vanterpool - NDP
5th Delores Christopher - NDP
6th Alvera Maduro-Caines - NDP
7th Dr. Kedrick Pickering - NDP
8th Marlon Penn - NDP
9th Ralph O'Neal - VIP
At-large:
Dr. Orlando Smith NDP
Myron Walwyn NDP
Archibald Christian NDP
Ronnie Skelton NDP

We have all repeated one phrase today, "The people have spoken". For the previous months, many repeated "Leh We Do This Thing". From today forward, I say it's about "doing the real things". We have infrastructure to mend, a hospital to complete and staff, tourism to revive, agriculture to grow, education to truly go from so-so to good and youths to empower and inspire positively.

We also have to remember that while we have elected representatives, we also have our work to do to. I hear people saying that the new government will not do us right and we will be sorry. I firmly state that we will not let them slip to that point - the point we were at on November 6, 2011. We have to help them work to get our BVI back on track. If we can co-exist with our representatives and the opposition, then we do more.

In relation to the opposition, we have four vocal VIP representatives who I expect will stay on the issues. Otherwise, they should not expect to be back in the next election. Many of them almost were ousted so they need to watch their backs. The want and need for power is crippling and this is why we have to work with all our reps to keep them grounded.

I pledge my support to the 5th district where I am about to go to live and to the 6th district where I attend church, have family and where my children's school is located.

We have to keep 'doing this thing' - this unity, this national pride - to keep our heads afloat in this trying times. Welcome to the Honorable Dr. D. Orlando Smith and his Cabinet. We are looking forward to your best representation as we work together to improve our BVI.

Voting of At-Large Votes Still Being Completing but it looks like NDP

As I rush to prepare to head to work, the NDP team still looks like they got the four AT-Large votes from the voting public in the BVI. There may be another two hours before the AT-Large votes are counted. I will be updating the blog tonight with the final information.

I think we can say that the NDP Government is back in from 2003 and have ousted the VIP Government who was voted back in 2007.

All the best to all the elected persons. We have a lot of work to do so let's do it!!!!!!!!

At-Large Ballots Still Counting at 5:33Am

There is still no confirmed close to the At-Large votes as yet. The NDP candidates are still ahead. However, VIP's Irene Penn-O'Neal seems to be edging in on Archibald Christian.

I went to sleep after two because I was really tired. I'm about to get ready for work and get the children on the go.

BVI Elections - At-Large Ballots Still Being Counted

The At-Large ballots are still being counted in the BVI Elections. So far, the National Democratic Party is in the lead with Archibald Christian, Myron Walwyn, Dr. Orlando Smith and Ronnie Skelton. The Virgin Islands Party with Zoe Walcott-McMillan, Vernon Malone, Irene Penn-O'Neal and Keith Flax are trailing.

The People's Progressive Alliance with Natalio 'Sowande' Wheatley, Shaina Smith, Elton Callwood and Khoy Smith are coming along as well.

The independants are Lionel Penn, Eileene Baronville, Betrand 'Washasha' Lettsome and Edmund Maduro. Lettsome is so far doing the best in the independents and has run a good campaign.

There is no doubt that all the boxes have to be counted before clear winners are declared. However, if leads start to stretch then we'll know what's going to happen.

Marlon Penn is the NEW 8th District Representative

With upset suprise vote-out, Marlon Penn has won the 8th District seat over the incumbent, Hon. Dancia Penn. Both Penns ran a clean campaign. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the other opponents Bevis Sylvester and Nolan Davis had bowed out of the election.

However, congrats to the Hon. Marlon A. Penn. He has a lot to do in his district and I know he has a plan. As I have posted before, we know that the community has to come together and work with who is in place.

Congrats Marlon!

Alvera Maduro-Caines has been elected to the 6th District in the BVI

Well it is truly a new day for the 6th District in the BVI. Mrs. Alvera Maduro-Caines has ousted 32-year politician Hon. Omar Hodge. It is truly a new dawning for the 6th District. I hope that all the voters will stand by her and work with her.

We have spoken and I think we are happy. She has a lot of work to do and we have lots to accomplish. We just have to remember that building the community is everyone's job.

Congratulations to Hon. Alvera Maduro-Caines!

November 7, 2011 will mark a new beginning for the British Virgin Islands

November 7, 2011 will mark a new beginning for the British Virgin Islands. The decisions that the people make will have a significant impact of the way of life and the culture of the country. While there has been a spirit of diviseness, we are hoping that the visit to the polls will cure this. Certainly, we do not want this to get worse.

I have my predictions on who will win but what I am hoping for is the best of all teams present to unite to improve our BVI. What we really need is unity in the country. The party lines that divide us only make the country weaker. We have prayed for the people to vote with their hearts and with their country in mind first.

I have favorites coming from the three parties and among the independents. However, they all can't win but we have to try to work with who will. I personally have seen some incumbents that must go. It is no longer acceptable to take the nonsense that they pass out - in bad decisions or white/brown envelopes. Some are still embroiled in this corrupt style of politics and it must stop. They are taking our country's treasury and spilling the money for unworthy causes.

What we need is to see the benefits of our labor. We need to know that projects are technically sound and cost effective. We want stiffer accountability from all levels of government. We want our infrastructure fixed. We want education brought back on track. We want the sewerage where it is supposed to be not on the road.

It is a pivotal time and all I can ask is for the people to pray before they cast their ballot. The future is literally in your hands.

Addictions

I'm addicted to chocolate - sort of. Some days I don't even think about it and other days I need my sweet. Everyone has their fix. So what's yours? I'm realizing some people love their weaves, nails, Facebook, Blogger etc.

Sometimes I get addicted to a game such as Sudoku, Mahjong or crossword puzzles but that's when I need a brain challenge. I guess I more need the chocolate when my period is on its way. I'm not a hair addict but I create styles for my daughter and myself because I refuse to pay to have our hair styled. It's costly and I get to have fun with our hair.

I'm not a shoe addict because I get shoes for neccessity. However, I can be a sucker for a cute shoe if it's in my budget. I guess I can be an addict for saving too because I'm not that much of a spender.

I'm really not hooked on anything really. I admonish those who are addicted to prescription or illegal drugs, fast food, Facebook, alcohol, sex, porn sites etc to get help. These vices take a lot out of your life and distract you from your family. Go to a counsellor and get help.

What's Your Creative Talent

Everyone has some way of being creative. My daughter loves to draw and to color. My son loves to draw and to drum. I like a little bit of cooking, drawing, writing and braiding hair. Some of the things I like to do, I may not be artistically inclined to create but I can still have fun with it.

Some ladies enjoy applying makeup, putting outfits together or baking while some men enjoy carpentry, cooking, cutting hair or spraying cars.

Unfortunately, as we mature and take on more responsibilities in life, we tend to throw aside our creative tendencies because we get too complacent or too busy. If you can find time for a little hobby, it's a good thing to take you away from the stress.

If you simply enjoy reading or a game, indulge yourself but just don't over-extend your pocket.

Have fun.

Do Something Nice Today

I am a firm believer that life is a simple gift and we should all share simple gifts with each other when we can. Even if it's a simple positive word, some needed information, a plate of food, a drink or even slice of cake, little things count.

So, today spread a little love with a friend or a loved one. It might be a complete stranger and you may be able to offer a little help to them. It may be someone who does not have enough change to complete a purchase or someone standing in the rain trying to get a ride.

Don't forget the road you travelled to get to your destination. There are others who are on some rough roads right now and could use a lift.

Short Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank you for all your continuous blessings. We praise your name and exalt you for all that you have done for us. We pray for your mercy upon us and our families. We plead for your comfort for those are grieving, empty, broke, broken, addicted and depressed. We seek your divine intervention in the leadership of this territory. We pray that our actions may be pleasing to you and that we would be good stewards and shepherds to your flock. We seek this in Jesus' name.

AMEN

My NEUTRAL Comments on Elections

I posted this on Facebook and think it pertinent to blog it. My question to the voters is:

Have the FIVE persons who you voted for in 2007:
1. Helped just you?
2. Aided just a few?
3. Facilitated a selected crew?
4. Pushed for community initiatives for me, she, he, them, us and you?

If your answer is any other than number 4, then you need to think carefully when making your choice on November 7!

There are many parties with different vision and manifestos but you have to weigh your FIVE votes carefully. They are all saying that you should go with one party all the way. However, I think you should vote with your heart and your conscience. If you have an ill feelings towards any candidate, you have to evaluate why you feel that way and evaluate the opponents and make that choice.

Don't let anyone influence you in the way they feel you should go. Pray and go to the polls with your BVI on your mind.

God is My Liberator, My People's Man, My Rising Sun and My Winner

Only God provides opportunities for all. Only Jesus is the rising sun. Only with God can we truly win. However, somehow man seems to want to make the claims that he can do it all. We can do nothing without God in our midst. God is the propeller, the energy and the motivation.

During these political times, even the prayers are slanted. Truly all I want is good visionary leadership. I want to see the problems addressed. I want to see the education move from passing and promoting to seasoning the youths for future leadership. I want to see the hospital completed running. I need to see the needs of the special needs, abused, elderly, the  mentally challenged and the addicted addressed more seriously. I want the mode of agriculture to be changed and the farmers mobilized. I need to see greater accountability in the use of government funds. My list can go on and on but these are some that stand out.

Only with God's guidance, we can move forward as a country in strength and unity.

POEM: It's Election Time

It's election time
and we are hearing all kinds of rhymes
unfortunately it's a lot of negative
but no true visionary perspective
it's a lot of calling names
and a lot of throwing blame
but that's not what we need
we need good people from a strong breed
to take our country to another level
and take out corruption with a big chisel
people with a national plan
who will make good use of our resources and land
people who will improve our infrastructure
leaders who believe in BVI culture
we need to focus on our education
not just the total figure at graduation
cause if the graduates can't read or write
then this country is truly in a plight
I remember we used to talk about 100% literacy
but now it seems to be 100% hypocrisy
we need to move forward from this trend
we need to take corruption to an end
let's look at the tourism sector
without solid infrastructure it can't get better
don't be fooled by the gimmicks and envelopes
these tactics are what make the country broke
pollution and crime are some of our problems
and the whole country has to be called to solve them
we are the ones who make up the community
but we have not been living in solidarity
we have to take our country by the helm
this is our BVI - it's our gem
so let's not take our future for granted
and hang with the lines of the corrupt and slanted
let's get our minds right and vote with our hearts
this is our BVI  so let's do our part

Loving My Reggae

If I was serious about being a reggae artist, I would be an artist who sing all kinds of music with a reggae flavor. I would want to be inspiring like Tarrus Riley, international like Sean Paul, legendary like Bob Marley, frank like Lady Saw and Tanya Stephens and sexy like Alaine. I would want to be powerful and VI representing like Pressure and Niyorah. I would still want to be edgy like Sizzla, Capelton, Beenie Man and Elephant man while being raw like Demarco. I would want to be entertaining like Jah Cure and Richie Spice and have qualities of all the artists I respect.

I am definitely the karaoke and house singer. I love reggae and I'll sing-a-long but that's it. I love ShineI, Ritical, Imo and the other BVI reggae artists who are coming strong lyrically and performance wise. They have the full talents to pursue music as a career. They are truly inspiring and know how to give good positive energy in their performances.

Reggae is a great artform because the music can make you cry, sing, love, dance, make wars or make babies. I think reggae will always be my favorite artform because it is so versatile. The only thing I would say is that gospel reggae sometimes tends to lean more dancehall reggae and I think gospel should keep that mellow flow. You want the non-christians to hear the gospel without hearing others secular songs popping in their heads.

In Awe of Plagiarizers

I can never understand the audacity of people who steal other’s work. It is one thing on a job when the co-worker takes credit for your ideas. However, when someone has the gall to steal an article that you have worked so hard on, it is a hurtful feeling. More and more I realize that there are people who are just looking for the easy way out. Sometimes, an article is barely published for five days and it’s already scraped.

I have had an editor threaten to take down my article because some thief republished it. I have written and fought with every person who has stolen my articles. They don’t think about the music you have to listen or the song lyrics you have to write out to complete an article. I’ve watched whole television shows while being tired and read boring subjects just to get an article completed.

Plagiarism is also a problem in schools and universities because the students are willing to pay for a paper. Can you imagine your doctor or lawyer or senator being plagiarizing a paper while they were studying? You’d have to hope that the paper was not in their subject area.
We can only hope that people would do the right thing. Copyright infringement is stealing and it is very unfair. No one has the right to take your hard work and represent it as t

Be Mindful of Others

I want to say that I have guts, confidence, vim and energy. But some days, that intestinal fortitude is hard to find. It could be because there's a tough decision to make or there's a tough person that will be affected.

You have to feel comfortable and good with yourself. I have worked with people who prefer not to share their feelings with the affected person - but yet they tell everyone else. It's a funny situation to be in but as you learn people, you learn to stay out of their way. You can also sense when there's a funny vibe coming from people. As cliche as it might sound, read between the lines and give them their space.

Giving someone their space might be one of those tough decisions but if it must be done, do so. Still maintain basic communication and manners but most of all be mindful of others.

POEM: My Grandfather

My grandfather

I can proudly say that my grandfather was a great man:
He was a hardworking and talented a craftsman
He never spoke ill-will and had a giving spirit
and his loving his smile would always give me a lift
He always gave me an encouraging and positive word
Some of these words have helped me in this world
I never had to look too far for a role model
because my grandpa had values that were solid
He showed me that I should be purpose driven
but not to forget about God while I’m living
he encouraged me to get an education
because life was not meant to be just a vacation
these values I can now teach his great-grandchildren
and give back some of the love that I have been given

Rest In Peace, Grandpa! We love you!

Crime Around Us

There are a lot of things that we can not explain. We will never know the answers and no matter how long we consider the scenario, we still won't understand. Crime is one of those things we won't understand. While, I may say that I have immunity to committing a crime, I can still be accused of wrongdoing. Every person has the right to supply a defence for themselves in court. Sometimes, he or she may be guilty but a good defence attorney can poke holes in the prosecution's case.

I don't know if anyone intentionally starts off wanting to be a crook or a criminal but I guess the situation may present itself when a dire need arises. We are not the judge and jury and while we may feel embarrasment and shame, we must remember that every one has their day in the wilderness with the devil.

We should not condone criminsl activity but we need to be empathetic to our fellow man. There is so much corruption, greed and lust in the world today and it is hard to stay on the right track. However, staying on the right track is the best decision.

The Earth has lost a Role Model but Heaven has gained an Angel

My grandfather, Joseph Blyden, was a good man. He was a hard worker and had a giving spirit. He had a strong will and loved to share positive values. I think his life is a great example for me to follow. He was well-respected and dedicated to his family. A very mild-mannered man with handsome features describes my granfather's outer features. What truly entreated you was his kind heart and peaceful spirit.

He is someone that I only have positive memories of. The memories may not be many but for what I can remember, it has always been a great experience being in his presence. He died on Sunday, October 16 after a long illness. May he rest in peace.

Food Prices, Crisis and Keeping My Home Stable

FAO choose a correct theme for World Food Day 2011. The theme is "Food Prices - From Crisis to Stability." However, unless a country is producing enough food to ensure its food security, the prices will be primarily subject to external factors. We, the consumers, are hardest hit when climate change, oil wars, invasions, economic downturns and the like increase the cost of food.

We also have to make better choices and by this I mean healthier choices. The first cry becomes healthier means more expensive. One of the Health Care Advocates who visited our PTA meeting reminded us that eating well today saves on medical bills in the future.

I look at fast food and compared it to the healthier choices. If I can get three apples or oranges for $1.00 then that's only $0.33 for each apple. A bag of cheetos is more than $0.50. One store has ripe bananas for $0.79 per pound. One banana does not weigh one pound and it may only weigh a quarter of a pound. My only problem with bananas is that my children will squash them in the bags but I can always cut them up.

I love shrimp but shrimp is not a necessity. Salmon can be considered a need because it is an excellent source of protein. However, you have to shop within your budget to try to get ahead. Things like ketchup, sugar etc, the staples, can be sought through comparison shopping for the best deal.

I learned that if I want my nice fresh produce to be used and not wasted, I need to turn it into fast food. I do not mean by frying! I take the grapes off the stems, wash them and store in a zipper bag. I cut up my lettuce and store the same way. I try my best to season my fish and meats immediately and store in the same matter.

I think more people need to try the green thumb method. Plant some herbs, tea bush, peppers or tomatoes to save and to also eat healthy.

We have to find ways to keep healthy while still saving and enjoying life!

FAO Celebrates World Food Day on October 16

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) observes World Food Day annually on October 16 to encourage attention to agriculture and to world hunger.

The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) celebrates World Food Day annually on October 16. As October 16 marks the anniversary of FAO, this day remains significant in the promotion of food and agriculture in the growing world. In November 1979, FAO at its Twentieth General Conference established World Food Day and this day has been celebrated ever since. With over 180 member countries in FAO, this commemoration has spread globally from the United Kingdom to the United States of America to the Caribbean among other countries.

World Food Day Celebrates Agriculture
World Food Day is celebrated not only to promote literal food but to promote agriculture, food security and to raise the awareness of hunger and poverty in the world. According to FAO, the most significant objective is to "encourage attention to agricultural food production and to stimulate national, bilateral, multilateral and non-governmental efforts to this end." This means that agriculture must be a central focus on all levels of leadership both in the private and public sectors locally and globally. According to FAO, two other key objectives for observing World Food Day are to "heighten public awareness of the problem of hunger in the world" and to "strengthen international and national solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty and draw attention to achievements in food and agricultural development."

According to FAO, there are almost one billion people in the world who suffer from chronic hunger. FAO states that "people who are chronically hungry are undernourished (and) don't eat enough to get the energy they need to lead active lives." While some people may feel that the prevalence of hunger may be low in their country, it is important to understand that the hunger FAO refers to is not only the lack of food but the lack of enough nutritional food in the diet to get a person through their normal day.

World Food Day is Observed Worldwide
Other significant objectives of World Food Day are to "encourage economic and technical cooperation among developing countries" and to "promote the transfer of technologies to the developing world." With FAO having its presence globally and with Governments worldwide having to reduce spending, feeding the world's population is a global problem. There are countries that rely heavily on the importation of their food and while they may thrive financially, their inability to feed themselves is a major concern. What happens when climate change or economic slumps affect the food supply? As these factors affect the number of persons who are chronically hungry globally, commemorating World Food Day brings attention and action to taking a more unified approach to reducing global hunger.

World Food Day in USA, USVI & BVI
While the USA has been observing World Food Day from the onset of the commemoration, World Food Day is becoming more significant in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and United States Virgin Islands (USVI) where hunger is not seen on a large scale.
  • USA's World Food Day: World Food Day USA encourages Americans to host activities to promote agriculture by organizing agricultural events and farmers' markets, making linkages with the schools or making donations to the needy.
  • USVI Makes World Food Day Fun: In the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), the [University of the Virgin Islands (UVI)](http://www.uvi.edu) hosts World Food Day activities. In 2009, UVI sponsored the "World Food Day Youth Super Chef Competition" for junior high and senior high school students and a "Breadfruit Bonanza Cooking Competition" for the public.
  • BVI Celebrates World Food Day: In the British Virgin Islands, 2009 marked the first official commemoration of this day with activities by the Department of Agriculture. The department gave donations of produce to the elderly, assisted at a local soup kitchen and held an open house for the public to learn more about agriculture.

Every participating country celebrates World Food Day at different levels. World Food Day is a significant day because it addresses the production and availability of food. According to the FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf, the number of hungry people in the world should be considered a "tragic achievement in these modern days". As World Food Day happens annually, it is hoped that on that day, people everywhere will unite towards the common goal of increasing and improving agricultural production while simultaneously reducing the number of persons who are hungry globally.

Times are hard

People, times are hard. It means that you may have to be mean or you may have to just mean well. We should cast our bread on the water but when you leave home in the morning to buy bread and bush water (tea), how can you really move forward? Can't you make breakfast for yourself at least 3 days out of the week. This is even stronger if you have a family.

I would like to see more young people invest in land as opposed to cars today. Even if your family has land, you should either seek to get a house lot at your own expense or purchase a lot or a home. This is the advice I willingly give any young person today.

The experts say that we should have 3 months living expenses saved but we can't save if we want to live like the rich and famous. It's time to think wisely and live smartly.

POEM: My God is competent

My God is competent
omnipotent
and he is the superintendent
He defies all boundaries
he is fair and never contrary
even when I act crazy
fail to act promptly
and move like I'm lazy
he is still always there for me
and he is there for all of us
but first we have to put in him
our trust
and forfeit our lusts
as he rubs off our rust
we can start afresh and anew
to show the example
of how we grew
in faith and patience
and with a renewed
consciene and confidence
YES My God is competent
all he asks you to do is repent

October -Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October hosts World Food Day, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Reading is Fun Week, Fire Safety Week and a few other things in the BVI. The media is business around this time because in addition to these observances, election is on November 7, 2011. The media is busy and making lots of money too. There are so many choices of topics to write about but some I will skirt around the issue and others I will hit on the head.

Domestic Violence is a serious offence because it affects the family. Crimes under domestic violence include rape, assault, bribery, kidnapping, murder, extortion, neglect etc. We have had several cases appearing in the headlines recently that show us that domestic violence is on the rise in our country. Charges of buggery, sexual assault, assault, attempted murder are cases that are waiting for the assizes.

We as a people no longer have that community spirit. We have become careless, covetous, rude and unruly. The family structure is no longer honored and children are allowed to rear themselves. A child rearing himself is like an unruly animal that rears up when a stranger comes near. We have many social issues that are the underlying problems to the issues we face in society - including crime, teenage pregnancy, financial woes etc.

To curb some of the negativity in our society, the approach has to be a territorywide action. Homes, schools, government, employers all will have to collaborate to teach the right values. Parents, lovers, employers all will have to learn, teach, grow and unite for the betterment of the community.

To end domestic violence, we all have to pledge to work together for the solution.

Short Story - Melony Melody Visits the Yorkton Islands

These are exciting times. Melony Melody is here! She is going to endorse one of the candidates in this year's election. I am very excited because I've always wanted to see her perform. She comes from our neighboring Caribbean island, Caliente. She has some great songs and is quite a performer. I focus on her as an artist, so I don't think about the proposed candidate, Juan Pang.

Anyway, I already have my hair done, and my clothes are ready. I arrive on time even though everything in the Yorkton Islands starts late. I am looking forward to getting Melony Melody's autograph. I snuck backstage and found her. She was polite and seemed quite glad to talk to an islander. After all, she came from the bigger island of Caliente, so she had one set impression of politicians. We continued to chat, and she asked me about Juan. I could not say much. However, I think she may have spoken to some other islanders before she spoke to me.

I left her to get ready for the show. I sat in the audience and waited for the show to start. I should be describing the event as a political rally, but I was there to hear Melony Melody. After the formalities and official openings, Melony came on stage. She said that she was dedicating her song to the new candidate. She sang her classics "Peace & Unity" and "Deceitful Minds." Then all of a sudden, this artist turned on Juan. She said that these would be politicians are all fake, and then she said something about money missing.

"This song is for Juan Pang:
you can't keep my honey
cause you make the bees sting me
you can't have my money
no more will we allow thievery
cause we tired of them defrauding the Caribbean countries
further messing up the history
defiling we pickney
and trying to take we dignity"

I say 'well sah' this is the thing now, "lol".

Poem: A Snippet

You'll gonna make me lose my mind up in here
But thank God for a Lord who cares
cause when I start to fret and fear
He sorts out the wheat from the tares
although they make look like a perfect pair
God know our hearts and he makes repairs
so rather than fear and scare
have faith cause God is always there!

A Key Story

Keys seem to be very important to people. Some of us relish the fact that we can control a key. It seems to be an element of power. I relish the fact that I control my words and that I can craft and shift them as I like in my blog. Any door can be broken down if the key is not released.

However, words convey every feeling that we have in this life. As much as they cause problems, words can squell a beef or express forgiveness. I forgiving people in different ways. If someone has been hinting that they want their space, I'll be glad to give it to them. The tension may be sharp but I have my headphones and can easily take a trip outside for a walk. So keys are simple just a symbol for one person but can be freedom for another. This freedom comes when access is discontinued - there is no more pressure or stress. Every thing works itself out.

Working in different jobs has helped me to read people. Most of them just want to use you for your talents. They are afraid to see you rise and are threatened when you shine. These are the people you leave with their keys. I seek to shine in many other arenas because I am not limited to just one dimension. I am like a multi-sided 3-d shape. I am hard to figure out yet I am simple to deal with.

So, don't let anybody victimize you or harass you. If you can't find a way out of a tough situation, hold the figurative keys to your mind and release the key of bondage and stress.

Net Profit
you hold the keys
but never on my knees
will I bow to you.
the actions you do
are not right
in any shade of light.
if in paradise
you can not realize
your safety and peace,
then you do need a release
and relief from tension
with no more apprehension.
just to stay away
from the smiley plays
and be true to my family
because reality
defends reciprocity
and life can only be
your own reality
accept it and defend it
true love to be your profit

Fun in Wiriting - Add Some Literary Devices

Metaphors and similies are necessary to lighten or brighten the English language. Otherwise, we would be saying that the cat looks like a feline. Doesn't it sound better to say that the cat is sly like a fox or that the cat was slow like a turtle? I guess we can even say the cloud sings or the trees howl. It just really makes the English language funny and I can add creative elements to my poetry.

We use literary devices to enhance our writing. Sometimes, people overuse common ones which can be considered cliches. I don't think I'm much of a metaphor user. I use more alliteration, rhyming, a little onomatopoeia, short lines or other techniques in my poetry. I write articles, press releases, speeched and blog entries but not much story/fiction.

I think that's a good challenge for me! I am going to experiment with fiction in short stories. Readers and followers, please be sure to leave me a comment so I can continue to improve.

Ribbon's Thoughts on Struggling, Persevering & Living

Crisis is here. Corruption is on the rise. So why are the high officials continuing to sweep the wrongdoing under the rug? They must be corrupt too. So what's really causing the crisis? It's all about greed.

We have become to lustful of our neighbours' goods and are trying to reach much farther than we can extend. I watch others to learn from their mistakes and to get good ideas. I am too much of a simple person to dig myself that kind of trouble. There are certain things that I want but I have to refrain from getting them because I simply cannot afford it. Where I can make a sacrifice, I will but it most cases it is far beyond me. I have to seek simple solutions to pull me out of the hole so that I can climb forward.

I never want to be a disappointment and therefore I need to live within my means so noone does not have to open the newspaper to hear that I have stolen or defrauded anyone. There is a lot of funny business and apparently we need to be mindful of the friends we keep. My friends are all progressive and are seeking to do positive things. I wish to remain that way too. I can only hope that those caught in corruption will change their ways. When you acquire by illwill, it never lasts.

I have had to work hard for everything that I have. Some people feel that I don't deserve it. It is God's will and if the Lord decides that I am to move on, so be it. I know the 'wants' that I have sacrificed, the trips to Red Cross, the walking that I have done and I am happy to say that I feel blessed to have lived simply but yet enjoyed life. I am glad to share my story as well.  As I move forward with the blessings that God has given to me, I can only smile. I know trials will continue but I go in faith.

My Broken English in a Poem

I stop wondering
cause I doing things
big and little things
I ain't pushing nobody
I just hailing
and passing with speed
cause I don't study delays
or distractions
unless is something positive
I got a higher calling
and I ain't got no time
to be bawling
I dusting off
and pushing harder
so if you ain't got
something nice to say
back off
and move out my way

Rediscovering Something You Enjoy

It's nice re-discover something that you enjoy. I enjoy nice music and it's great to hear a pretty song that you have not heard in years. I've been replaying Kenny Latimore's "Never Too Busy" because it is truly a relaxing song. I would love to be a DJ so that I could entertain the world with beautiful music. I have my little playlist that I walk with to work because sometimes, you need that mood music to relax your tired mind.

At work, you have to find that balance. It's either the music or a co-worker or friend that you can chat with for a minute to break the monotony. You may prefer a favorite snack or a walk outside but you need that stress breaker. For me it may all of the above that I need on a day or just one. I also love a Guyanese snack called Mitai because it breaks hunger and tastes good too. I am also an M&M fan as I shared in my thoughts about being a chocolatoholic.

Sometime, the walk is the best option to get away from a tough situation or a chatty co-worker. That is one of the few things that I love about where I work now. I'm in the midst a natural landscape and I can take a nice walk and see life and growth. There are unpleasant eyesores here and there too but I have learned to ignore them. I wish I would not ignore them but to complain is a cry to deaf ears.

I prefer to eat my M&Ms and find a cool tree.

Seeing Someone After A Long Time

Sometimes you see a person that you have not seen in over a year and the greeting or reaction is poor. You may have shared intense, happy, sad, fighting or restless moments together. However, when people move on or move away, they change. They put their energy into so many other things. They probably forgot that you exist. For anyone to be successful, they have to continuously progress.

We get hurt sometimes but we have to get over it. Sometimes, some time away may be able to garner you more respect from others. It makes no sense to waste time wondering about people's reactions anyway. We need to focus on improving ourselves and our interactions with others. We will only get respect when we give respect.

Also, sometimes we think that people are cold but they may just be preoccupied. Who really has the time to wonder what everyone is thinking. We have so many challenges facing today that we need to stay centered.

Sherise Stapleton Crowned Miss Teen Diva 2011

Fifteen year-old Sherise Stapleton won the title of Miss Teen Diva 2011 on September 24, 2011 at the East End/Long Look Community Centre. Sherise competed against Brittani Stoutt and Diamond Lake in a spectacular and eye-catching competition of seven segments.

Brittani was awarded Best Diva Party Wear with her orange polka dot and blue ensemble and Best Creative Diva Wear which was made from shopping bags from Clarence Thomas Ltd. Brittani also secured Miss Intellect, which is scored based on the introduction speech and the Question & Answer segment; and Miss Poise which is determined by the total poise scores from every segment.

Sherise won Best African Diva Wear, Best School Wear and Best Formal Wear with her black and yellow fitted gown which had a short but elegant train. This year for the African Diva Wear segment, the contestants had to present a fashion-forward African print inspired dress and also had to perform a dance that resembles African culture. For Sherise’s winning school wear, she displayed a turquoise shirt and a purple skirt. The skirt was then converted into a school bag as Sherise completed the segment in short pants.

For the Formal Wear segment, the young ladies were challenged to showcase a black formal dress that added a pop of color. According to Camille Merry, the pageant founder, she wanted to add yet another element of surprise to the pageant as well as go beyond the traditional pageantry borders, while forcing contestants to use their creativity. Sherise also won Miss Popularity, Miss Congeniality, which was chosen by the contestants and Miss Photogenic, which was chosen by the pageant’s photographer, Mr. Curtis DeRavariere.

The 2011 Miss Teen Diva Pageant was hosted by Kareem Hull and Katherine Irish and entertainment was provided by Jhanique and Reema. There was also a fashion show put on by L&D Impressions and this was well received by the audience. The Pageant Committee would like to acknowledge Caribbean Transport Ltd., Starworks Beauty Salon & Spa, Creations Hair Supply Store, Ayanna’s House of Hair, Road Town Wholesale Trading Ltd and all the persons who made the event a success. The founder also wishes to thank all of the committee members and helpers whose invaluable contributions helped to make the pageant a success.

Sherise’s first official appearance as Miss Teen Diva 2011 was at the Ministry of Education & Culture’s Back To School Service. Sherise will be linked with the D.A.R.E. Club for Girls, Family Support Network (FSN) and will be visible in the community. The Miss Teen Diva Pageant Committee reaffirms its commitment to working with young ladies in the British Virgin Islands and also with the overall community to promote a positive spirit among our young people.

POEM: About the Plastics

It's all about the plastic
making you think
that life is fantastic
but it's thoses underlying tactics
that really cause life to be hectic
it's much better to be authentic
cause plastic living is lethargic
caustic, spastic and drastic
and that's not what I pick
that's the ballon that I prick
let me grab my figurative stick
cause someone's gonna get real licks
for I'm not afraid of tricks
I'm enthusiatic, realistic and a specialist
so tell the plastics to desist
and disappear

Brother Resistance's De Power of Resistance Album is Rapso Music

Hailing from the republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Brother Resistance of the 'Rapso' movement released the De Power of Resistance album in 1996.

Trinidad andTobago (T &T) is known for its soca and calypso music, for originating the steel drum/pan and as the birthplace of successful artistes, such as Nicki Minaj and Heather Headley. Reggae artistes, Ziggy Rankin, Jah Bami and Isasha also come from Trinidad and Tobago, as does Brother Resistance and 'rapso' music.

What is Rapso
** Out of the heavy soca background of Trinidad and Tobago, a new musical movement was born in the 1970s, called 'rapso', which combined traditional musical rhythms with a more poetic and rap style of vocalization. One of the men who was part of the initial movement and still promotes rapso today is poet, Lutalo Masimba, more often called Brother Resistance. Rapso, according to Brother Resistance, is described as "the rap of soca...a synthesis of rhythms - voice rhythm with traditional drum and steel drum."

Poet and Artiste Brother Resistance
While Brother Resistance is one of the premier faces of rapso, he does not credit himself as the originator of this musical style. He refers to the oral tradition of his African ancestors because rapso tends to follow traditional chants and beats. He has toured in Europe and many other places promoting rapso. I met Brother Resistance in August 2008 at Carifesta X, where he gave an engaging performance. Presently, Resistance, a UWI graduate, is the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians' Organisation (TUCO) President. He was recently honored at the University of the West Indies 50th Anniversary Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony, according to Guardian Media Limited.

Brother Resistance's Albums
According to Brother Resistance's discography, he has released several albums of rapso music including Roots of De Rapso Riddum in 1982, Rapso Explosion in 1984, Rapso Takeover in 1986 and Rapso Uprising in 1989. For Rapso Lovers de World Over (1990), Touch de Earth with Rapso (1991), F rom De Heart of De Rapso Nation (1992), From De Rapso Tradition (1993) and De Power of Resistance (1996) were released in the following decade. Since 2000, he has released both Let Us Rejoice and When De Riddum Explode in 2001.

De Power of Resistance
The 1996 release, De Power of Resistance, is appropriately titled because it is a powerful performance in the rapso style of music. De Power of Resistance credits the contributing artistes as 'de Network Rapso Riddum Band'. Resistance produced the album along with Kenny Phillips, Martin Raymond and Anase Hadeed. The album has fourteen tracks, including "Tonite Is De Nite," "Dancing Shoes," "Drum and De Bass" and the popular "Ring De Bell."
  • "Life So Beautiful Remix": This track is reminiscent of the 1990s techno and rap syles. Resistance gives a rap style performance as he admonishes listeners to "Stay off the drugs and live." This song adopts the chant and response style, with the background singers chiming in response to his chants. He calls "Drugs" and the backup singers respond with an extended "No."
  • "Big Dirty Lie Dancehall Mix": "Big Dirty Lie" is the opening chant of this song. Resistance sings about Christopher Columbus, on a rhythm similar to the reggae rhythm called the "Bam Bam Riddim." Songs on the Bam Bam Riddim include "Murder She Wrote" by Chaka Demus and Pliers, "Dem A Bleach" by Nardo Ranks and "A Who She Mi Dun" by Cutty Ranks. Brother Resistance gives a historical chant about Columbus' claim regarding his fraudulent discoveries and the resultant upheaval and subsequent re-population of the Caribbean through the slave trade. Near the ending of the song, Resistance and the band sing the words "Murder He Wrote," a sample of the song mentioned earlier, "Murder She Wrote."
  • "Is It Safe?": This is the shortest track on the album. It is a one minute long poem with a serious message. "Is it safe to be yourself in a society where priority is on pose and posture, where trying to be like somebody else is all that matter?" are the opening words. He continues, "where courage is referred by many as madness", in his challenge to the way society functions and the way the community fights against itself; asking "Is it safe?" until the end of the poem.
  • "Power Mix": This song starts off like a traditional calypso song, reminiscent of the Mighty Sparrow, Arrow and other calypso and soca pioneers. The mix starts off with a chant, asking the listener to "shake something" because the rapso riddim will have them entranced to dance, and singing "jamming tonight, rapso jamming tomorrow night." It is the longest track, at over six minutes, and encourages the 'bobo shanti', the traditionalist, and all to dance.
  • "Mother Earth": "Let the vibes be one with you, Mother Earth" are the words that begin this soulful chant. Not a typical calypso rhythm, this song expresses admiration for our beloved 'Mother Earth', which has been the place of existence for humankind. Resistance also refers to the way man has damaged and offended nature and asks to seek a solution to save her.
  • "Ring De Bell": Brother Resistance asks the world to "ring de bell" for culture, justice, freedom and rapso in "Ring De Bell." You can hear an actual bell ringing between the drum beats and other instruments during the song. He sings, "I come to deliver this word/ let the voice of the down-pressed be heard over the world...I come with my bell just to second the motion, rock the rapso riddim."
Rapso has been around for over thirty years. The combination of traditional calypso rhythms with poetic flow is the result of the continuation of the Afro-Caribbean oral tradition. Brother Resistance is a Trinidadian cultural icon and his De Power of Resistance is an album that both poetry and calyso
lovers will enjoy.
