Poem for a Sister Who Has Trod On

Positively radiant,
inspiring, a true gem...
an example to all women,
a nurturer,
a diligent worker,
someone you can
depend on -
a lady who showed
positivity
in every step
she took,
one that we'll always remember
because when this sister smiled
her positive energy
was shared with all
in her presence

Rest in Peace, Ijahkey.

Change is Good

Change is good. There are situations where people can't deal with it. In most cases, I welcome it and embrace it. If I wasn't open to change in my younger days, I would not be the person I am today. Sometimes, we have to step out of our box to learn new things and meet new people.

We have to be able to seek improvement for ourselves. What is the next step that you can take to launch your career to the next level? Is a degree or training needed? Do you need to master a new skill? I took a 6-week online course and it made make think differently.

What about your children? I have been using online games to help them and I think it is working. I get them involved in events and competitions so that they can build their confidence. I am very candid with them and I have told them that I expect more as they get older.

Could joining an organization help you. You can meet new people and maybe you may get involved in community activities that can benefit others.

Take a step forward. Take a leading role and see how you can progress and improve your life.

Be encouraged.

Just one of those days

When you are able to make decisions, you have to be careful. Sometimes, we have to think things through. I'm sometimes too hasty but I am working on that. I have to work on myself and keep trying to improve.

On another note, I met a lady who was an inspiration to many. She passed today and she will be missed. She has been a positive influence on me and I don't think I ever told her that. She was diligent, positive, beautiful and courageous. May she rest in peace and may her legacy be carried through her generations.

Be sure to tell people thanks, compliment them and encourage them!

Lots Going On

I  have been putting in a lot of time into some various matters because I want to move forward on some projects. We all have to set goals and make plans to implement these goals. I am going to throw on the teacher hat and make a test for my son to study by. I also have some craft projects to work on. It's going to be an early morning tomorrow so this blog post won't be much longer.

I'd like to encourage everyone to stay focused and diligent in whatever they do. If you see something that you can aim for, go for it!

It's MidTerm Test Time

It's time for Midterm tests for my son so I am delinquent with my blog. That's not good and it's no excuse but I have to put him first. The work is getting harder and I have to work with him. However, I have been keeping up with my Linette- Inspire VI page on Facebook where I share little blurbs to encourage people or to share tips and advice. The blog is more for the longer thoughts and poems that go over a paragraph.

I can't stay long because I realize that we need to go over fraction problem solving. I'll have to break it down to show that you have to find the whole first then seek to find the portion that is used. It's not easy being a parent - the provider, the teacher, the nurturer, the correcter and the counselor.

Encouragement for May 15, 2013

are you weak
are you broke
are you broken
well don't be discouraged
don't be flustered
and don't sit and just cry
Stand strong
pray for inspiration
make change in your situation

it's in your hands

POEM: Don't Fret

As we cry
as we smile
and as we live
we have burdens
some heavy
some light
and there's some things
that are just not right
but it makes no sense to fight
because
your plight
is no different
to anyone else's
it's not necessarily
a pain
sometimes
but the rain can
make some change
in the game
don't fret
cause even if
you get wet
you just have to
dry off
not fly off
just try
to manage
cause these situations
don't need to cause damage
so even while
you're famished
you have justification
to do your best
and sometimes
you just leave
the rest
but know yourself
love yourself
and stand firm
in your choices

Ten Reasons to Look Past Your Frustrations

There are lots of reasons why people get frustrated. However, there are lots of reasons to look past the frustrations and move on:

  1. God loves you
  2. You can succeed
  3. Challenges are only for a time
  4. Your family loves you and depends on you
  5. You are an inspiration to other people who you may not know
  6. You are a role model to some younger person
  7. There are people who have it worse than you
  8. You are acting too hasty on a matter
  9. You may have blown things out of proportion
  10. Your attitude determines your aptitude
You can't stay stuck in the past. Look forward and move forward. Remember the steps you took along your journey but don't let anything hold you back.

POEM: Where It's At

Are you afraid
or are you weighted
what's on your mind
are you fine
or are you just lost
or is your mind
in another place
as you pace and pace
not sure of where
you are going
not knowing
that time is fickle
and while you may
be tickled
with the way
life is going
don't let it all
get your down
because in time
things will turnaround
and you will be found
and when you stand
safe and sound
it'll be all ok

POEM: Inconsistencies

Inconsistencies are a constant
but background checks are non-existent
no level playing field
but lots of underhanded evil deeds
there seems to be no end in sight
the people don't even want to fight
but as more things come to light
we're seeing that living is tight
and every night
the plunderers are out to get us
in high and low places
there's no one to trust
change is in the people's hands
change may have to become
the plan
and when I say change
I mean for the better
cause I what see
needs more than a letter
and what I know is that
it can't continue
we have to raise our morals
and fix the issues
the unfinished business
and petty nonsenses
and the broken cookie jar
and that's just the start
but the real start
starts with you

Lauryn Hill's Hit Album: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is a powerful lyricist and singer and her first album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, gained acclaim with hits like "Ex-Factor" and "To Zion."

In 1998, Lauryn Hill (http://www.lauryn-hill.com/) released her first solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill with Ruffhouse Records. There are a total of sixteen songs on this album including two bonus songs "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" and "Sweetest Thing Mahogany Mix ." "Ex-Factor," "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "Everything is Everything" are some of the popular songs from this album. Hill's official site shares that "Lauryn Hill's solo debut sold 8 million copies in the U.S., spawned 4 top ten singles, and garnered Hill five Grammy (http://www.grammy.com/) awards." The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was written and arranged by Hill.

Lauryn Hill Started with The Fugees
Lauryn Hill's voice was firstly widely recognized through her singing with Wyclef Jean and
Pras in The Fugees. They delivered the hits "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready Or Not." Hill was also recognized for the song "Sweetest Thing" which was featured on the soundtrack from the film Love Jones starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate (http://www.larenztate.com/). Her stunning
dark face and afrocentric hairstyles also caught attention as she landed on the covers of Time and Rolling Stone.

The Mis-education in the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
The cover of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill features a sketch of this talented R&B and Hip Hop artist. A wooden pencil lays flat on both the front and back cover of the CD. Hill ties in her mis-education further with the classroom themed interludes between the songs. A school bell rings and a roll call starts off the "Introduction" of this powerful album. Names are called and every student answers until "Lauryn Hill" is called three times with no answer. The classroom setting is continued at the end of "Lost Ones." The teacher shares that he will write letters on the board and the students recite the letters "L-O-V-E". They talk about songs about love and mention Kirk Franklin's song "Love" and a song from the movie Titanic. The discussion continues at the end of "To Zion," "Doo Wop (That Thing)," "When It Hurts So Bad," "Forgive Them Father" featuring Shelly Thunder and "Every Ghetto, Every City."

Top Hits From Lauryn Hill First Solo Album
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill features artists such as Mary J. Blige (http://www.mjblige.com/) and D'Angelo. This album can be considered a cross between soul, R&B, Hip Hop and a hint of jazz. Some songs have live instruments in the recording including "To Zion" featuring Carlos Santana and "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" featuring the Indigo Quartet.
  • "Nothing Even Matters" featuring D'Angelo: "Nothing Even Matters" has a soul and jazzy feel and powerful lyrics that sing about love. "I sometimes have the tendency / to look at you religiously" are lyrics sung by D'Angelo. Hill assures her lover that no natural catastrophe or the threat of unemployment could change her feelings towards him.
  • "Ex-Factor" is an Ode to the Exes: Lauryn Hill sings the lead and background vocals on this emotional song. "Ex-Factor" is a painful yet expressive song that sings about breaking up. "When I try to walk away, you hurt yourself to make me stay" and "cause no one's hurt me more than you / and no one ever will" are examples of the lyrics. "Ex-Factor" contains a sample from Wu-Tang Klan (http://www.wutang-corp.com/)'s "Can It All Be So Simple." Wu-Tang Kan's song was originally sampled from Barbra Streisand (http://www.barbrastreisand.com/us/home)'s "The Way We Were" which was written by Marvin Hamlisch and Alan and Marilyn Bergman (http://www.alanandmarilynbergman.com/).
  • The Title Track "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill": "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is a deep song about finding oneself. Her words "And every time I try to be / What someone has thought of me / So caught up, I wasn't able to achieve" show personal struggle. The lines she repeats "I made up my mind to find my own destiny" reflect that through the soul searching, the resolution was made to fend for herself to live as she chooses.
  • "To Zion" is a Song to Lauryn Hill's Son: In the 'Shout Outs & Thank You's' of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Hill states "Zion (you delivered me)!!! My joy and my light, Mommy loves you." Hill paired with Carlos Santana on the guitar to present this inspiring song about the love for her son, Zion. Her chorus is simply "the joy of my world is in Zion" in expressing her love for her son.
Lauryn Hill is multi-talented as she can sing, write and arrange music. She is an appreciated and loved artist. Since her release of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, she released MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2002. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which won five Grammy awards, will remain coveted by many upcoming artists and loved by millions of fans because of its success and timelessness.
