My Goals are ... mine

I would like to be a shining star in everything I do. I think everyone should have similar aspirations too. I believe I was born like this and I have continued the trend. What helps my self esteem? I am not sure.

So why would anyone aspire to be less? When we look at people just at a glance, we may feel that someone has low esteem and self worth. However, you do not know where their goals really lie. Some people do not aspire for greatness in their profession, but in their family life or in their community roles. Some people may aspire to be the sexiest person alive. Who are we to judge?

We would all want to think that everyone aspires to be perfect like many of us pretend to be. Many people just want to live and make it through the rough days. Of course, they may want the house on the hill but if all we can afford is the shack on the bottom - and it's safe enough - then we are living!

Everyone has to know their intimate thoughts. Get in tune with yourself and think about what you want in life. No one can dictate what you dream to be. A positive role model, a spouse, a good friend, a counsellor or a pastor may give you good advice but only you can chart your course to success.

Supermarket Shopping Tips: Buy the Best Fruits from the Store

Fruits are essential in everyone's diet. Choose the best ones from the market to enjoy the fruits and to save money while grocery shopping.

Fruits provide many nutrients that people need from their daily consumption of food. As fruits are perishable, it is important to select the best ones when grocery shopping at the market. A careful eye must be given to tropical fruits such as bananas, mangoes, papayas. Fruits that are overripe or blemished can be used in recipes or juices but it always better to select the best first to save money.

What to Look for When Buying Fruits at the Grocery Store
Look for the best quality fruits at the supermarket to save money. Any small amount of wastage can be considered lost money. Find fruits that look fresh, are free of bruises and appear disease free. Ignore fruits that look, feel or smell overripe. Oranges should be round and firm without sunken spots. Also, apples should not have soft spots. Grapes on a bunch should all look fresh and firm. Feel free to ask a clerk if the fruits are fresh and when the market will restock its produce aisles.

buying Bananas from the Grocery Store
People who live in the Caribbean today purchase bananas for cooking and for ripening. The green bananas are cooked and used a starch with steamed fish or salted fish. These green bananas should be fully green with no hint of ripening. Bananas sold as ripe bananas will be much more yellow and full in appearance. Look for ripe bananas that are free of blemishes and bruises but are not overripe or too
soft. A soft or bruised banana is still edible but if several pieces have to be cut of before eating, there will be money going to waste unless the fruit is used for juicing or in banana bread.

Enjoy Mangoes From the Market
Mangoes are a celebrated fruit as there are festivals held in several places such as the British Virgin Islands, India, Miami and Antigua that highlight the mango. While mangoes are so tasty, when purchasing look for small holes, dark spots and bruises. Bruises mean that the mango fell during harvesting and a bruise will cause a soft spot. Dark spots could mean an anthracnose infection in the fruit tree. A fruit with any small holes should be avoided because this could be the presence of worms or the Mango Seed Weevil Larvae. In some cases, mangoes will not show the presence of any pests until ripening so be sure to carefully select mangoes that are slightly softer or more closer to fully ripening.

Buy the Right Papayas from the Supermarket
Papayas are another tropical fruit that are very nutritious and tasty. Similar to the bananas, Caribbean people boil the green papayas and eat the ripe ones fresh or they juice the fruit. Green papayas should be green without any coloring on the skin. Papayas bought for ripening at the market should have orange coloring showing that the fruit will soon ripe. To advance ripening, place in a dark cupboard or in a paper bag for a couple days. Greer also notes that with a ripe papaya, the "flesh will give slightly when fruit (is) pressed in palm of hand". Papayas are also susceptible to the anthracnose infection, so be sure to inspect the skin closely for any dark or sunken spots.

When purchasing fruits from the supermarket, look for the best quality. Avoid any obvious flaws in the fruit to save money. Find bananas, papayas, mangoes or other fruits that are free of bruises and blemishes so that your family enjoys the fruits bought at the supermarket.

Pertinent. Relevant. Consistent. Decent. Persistent. Confident. Different. Prominent. Heaven-Sent.

Pertinent. Relevant. Consistent. Decent. Persistent. Confident. Different. Prominent. Heaven-Sent.
These words are so important to me. They all do rhyme, but that adds flavor.

Pertinent & Relevant - For me, these words mean that I have a say in what's going on. I am read, listened to, and my opinion matters at least to a few.

Consistent - Consistency should be my M.O. I should not be all over the place but playing the field with my head on. If I change some movement, it has to be to make a statement or take a stand.

Decent speaks for itself. Everybody wants to be decent and expects to be treated with decency.

Confident - This is something that people struggle with. We have to find ways to harness confidence so that we can face the public and overcome hurdles.

Different - I always dare to be different. I guess that's why I studied Marketing because I think people need to come up with new ideas to promote themselves and their business.

Prominent - As with relevant and prominent, I seek to have a voice that is listened to. I hope to evoke positive change. I don't need to be rich, I want to survive, but I want the country to survive too.

Heaven-Sent - We are all heaven-sent. We are all here for some reason. Even if you feel someone is a thief, murderer, or rapist, they are God's children who have just fallen away from the flock and need prayer and guidance. Plus it's the title of my favorite Keisha Cole song!

These are just some words that I thought of last night and shared on Facebook. As I looked at my status, I decided to blog about it. It's early in the morning so I thought - why not start the day on a good start!

A Woman in a Black Dress: What Does This Mean?

There are many occasions for a lady to wear a black dress, but the event dictates the style. Women wear black in mourning, at work and out in the evenings.

Fashion stylists always say that every woman needs a 'little black dress' in her closet. What does wearing a black dress mean and for what occasions do women wear black dresses? The black dress has become a staple in women's wardrobe and can used for funerals, the office and for evening functions. Black dresses can easily be accessorized and an addition of color can create a fresh look.

Black Dresses Can Signify Mourning
Black and other dark colors are accepted as colors for mourning. So women wear black, navy blue, grey or purple to funerals and memorial services. A typical black dress for a funeral will not be sleeveless or tube-topped, tight-fitting or short. It would be similar to any dress that can be worn to church with an appropriate length, minimal cleavage and well-fitting. However, for funerals, it is better to tone down on the sequins and embellishments. A lady can still have fun with accessories which should be black, white, gold, silver, tan or another mourning color such as purple or grey.

A Woman in a Black Dress Can Show Professionalism
A woman wearing a well-fitting black dress that is office appropriate is sure to make a good first impression in an interview. A black dress is also a good staple in the regular work wardrobe. Again, appropriate length and fit with 3/4 or long sleeves are key to keeping a black dress work appropriate. A sheath with short sleeves can be paired with a jacket for a complete work look. You can convert a skimpy black dress into office wear by adding a nice cardigan or blazer. Accessories can be a bit more playful as red shoes and jewelry go very well with a black dress giving the work look an added boost.

A Black Dress is a Great Look for Evening Functions
The black dress really comes alive for evening functions because that is where the dress can be worn to be more fun and exciting. For a dinner date, prom or a night of dancing, a black dress can be strapless, sequined, short or with low cleavage - all within each lady's taste. Accessories and bits of color can be added if needed so that even the black dress worn at work can be upgraded to an evening look. A black dress is a great piece for any lady to have in her wardrobe.

A woman in a black dress who wears her outfit elegantly with the right accessories will always be admired. As stylists proclaim to the world that every woman needs her little black dress, ladies should wear their dresses proudly whether it is to a funeral, to work or for a night out with family and friends.

Foundation Garments: Choose the Bra that Fits Best

Foundation garments are key to making any outfit look neat and polished. Women should choose a bra that gives the best fit and look under clothing.

Many women have experienced problems with selecting bras that give the right fit. Sometimes, it is the size and other times it may be the color or the style. Women need to keep several factors in mind when choosing bras including size, style, color and fabric for overall comfort.

Find the Right Bra Size
Ladies should be aware of their correct bra size. Although bra sizes are supposed to be based on a universal sizing chart, sizes may vary based on each bra brand. On a visit to a bra or underwear store, ladies can be measured around the bust and under the bust line to determine the correct bra size. After the correct size is verified, it is much easier to find the best fit.

Select the Bra Style that Suits Best
After finding the correct size, a woman then must choose the most appropriate style that fits her bust line. Today, ladies can opt for push-up, strapless, racer-back or sport bras. However, women must be mindful that they must select bras that fit comfortably and can work with their clothing. While small busted ladies can easily wear a push-up bra, larger chested women will be better dressed with a full comfort-strapped bra.

Choose the Bra Color
Every woman should have at least one of each of the following color bras - black, white and nude or tan. All the other colors of the rainbow and print bras are allowed but should be worn under clothing where the colors are not visible. Despite the seasonal fashion trends, it is better to leave underwear unseen under clothing, especially at work.

Bras Come in Different Fabrics
Today, bras are available in cotton, spandex, lace and combinations of these fabrics. There are padded fabrics and also sheer bras which vary according to the fabric. Most styles and colors of bras are available in cotton for women who prefer cotton.

Special Bras for Women - Mastectomy, Breastfeeding, Backless
Bras are being offered in more versatile styles and shapes to allow women to breastfeed or wear the most scanty dress while keeping the bust line shapely. Low-back, backless and post mastectomy bras are some of the special bras that can be purchased from lingerie boutiques.

Take Care of Bras
Women should also look carefully at durability and care of undergarments. Purchase a lingerie bag to wash bras especially those with underwire or lace. Taking care of bras helps them to retain the shape, color and thus helps them to last longer.

Bras are essential foundation garments that make an outfit more complete. This undergarment comes in many shapes, colors and styles, but it is important for each woman to find the style that gives her comfort and the best look.

Foundation Garments: Panties That Pull It Together

For women, undergarments form the foundation of an outfit. Panties should be comfortable yet offer the needed coverage while still having a sense of style.

When a woman selects her outfit for the day, she should consider her choice of foundation garments, especially her panties. Women should avoid bulges, panty lines and should also be mindful of the cut and color choice under clothing. While females should be mindful of any unsightly fashion faux pas, they should have fun with their underwear.

An Ill-fitting Panty Will Not Pull It Together
The type of undergarment that a woman wears should be left to the imagination of anyone seeing her. With jeans or loose dresses and skirts, panty lines will not be very visible. However, under slacks, a-line skirts or other closely fitted clothing, panty lines can be a nuisance. Having the right fit in the undergarment is important because if the elastic is too tight around the legs, it will print through clothing. It is the same if the panty is too loose because there will be unsightly bulges.

Can Any Panty Pull It Together?
There are many choices today for undergarments. There are the boy-shorts, low-risers, thongs, hiphuggers, v-strings, cheekies and briefs. Again, a good fit is important but for women who have problem areas with their shape, they should find the panty that suits their body type.

Panties We Know -Briefs, Thongs, Low-Risers & Boy Shorts
Many women may have at least one of the following in her lingerie bag - briefs, thongs, low-rise panty or a boy- short. These panties are comfortable and versatile for most women.
  • Briefs: A well-fitting brief offers full coverage over the buttocks and tummy. If the tummy is a problem area, a brief with a control panel can help. Most briefs also cover the buttocks.
  • Thongs: Thongs can be controversial yet these panties are very sexy. Thongs are necessary for light or close fitting materials such as spandex where a panty line cannot be excused. Some women prefer thongs as their regular underwear choice and with menstrual pads now designed for thongs, it is easier to make that choice.
  • Low-rise Panties: Low-risers go well with low-rise jeans or other clothing that fall past the waist. Women who have large tummies are not encouraged to wear these panties because these offer no support.
  • Boy Shorts: Boy shorts are neat and depending on the height of the rise can offer good coverage over the tummy. Women with cellulite on the buttocks should refrain from wearing this type of panty.

Panties are No Longer Just Black and White
Panties no longer come in a simple color palette of black, white and beige. Colors are much more fun and prints include stripes, polka dots, flowers and animal prints. Of course, any onlooker should not be able to see these fun colors and prints under clothing. Therefore, women should still keep a few black, white and beige panties in the underwear drawer. These neutral colors can have fun touches with lace or just with the style of the panty.

Women never want to feel limited with their choice of underwear. However, as with any foundation garment, fit is important. Wear panties that fit the body type and can work with any body flaws. Choose fun colors in the various styles of panties and always keep some black, white or tan undergarments in the underwear drawer.

1990s Reggae Music: Buju Banton's 'Til Shiloh Album

Buju Banton is a talented reggae and dancehall music artist. His 'Til Shiloh album was released in 1995 with "Murderer" and "Wanna Be Loved."

Buju Banton, born Mark Myrie in Jamaica, is a popular reggae artist who has released several powerful albums including Inna Heights, Voice of Jamaica and 'Til Shiloh. Banton, although extremely talented, is no stranger to controversy. However his musical abilities are still well respected and appreciated worldwide. The Grammy-nominated Banton first came on the reggae music scene in the early 1990s and was subsequently able to garner an international following.

Buju Banton sang "Boom Bye Bye" in 1992 with lyrical content that is described as anti-homosexual. This song cost Banton concert appearances in the United States and the United Kingdom. On January 8, 2010, Buju Banton was arrested in December for allegedly buying cocaine from an undercover officer. In September 2010, Banton's case was declared a mistrial and was then re-filed. Later in November 2010, Banton was released on bail in the same matter with a new case date for February 2011.

Buju Banton's Musical Legacy
After his debut in the 1990s, Banton subsequently released his first album Mr. Mention in 1992. Mr. Mention featured songs that eclipsed the dancehall era - "Batty Rider" and "Dickie". The follow-up album was Voice of Jamaica in 1993. Voice of Jamaica is appropriately titled because this album literally pushed Banton to international stardom. Songs off the album included "Willy Don't Be Silly" promoting HIV/AIDS prevention and "Deportees (Things Change)." The music video for the song "Make My Day" from the same album played on BET.

'Til Shiloh came in 1995 and Inna Heights was released in 1997.  Banton then released other popular albums like Unchained Spirit in 2000 and Rasta Got Soul in 2009. His most recent release is Before the Dawn in 2010. In addition to his personal albums, through his label, Gargamel Music Inc., Banton released the 100 Watt Riddim music video featuring Ghost, East Coast, Mr. Vegas, New Kidz, Assassin, Mitch and Mr. Lex. The songs of the riddim were released on the album Excalibur Sound 1: 100 Watt in 2006.

The Songs of'Til Shiloh
Buju Banton is definitely a solid lyricist and the 'Til Shiloh album shows his talent. "Murderer," "Untold Stories," and "Not An Easy Road" brought about Banton's socially conscious reggae side. His dancehall side came out in "Champion," "It's All Over" and "Complaint" featuring Garnett Silk, now deceased. "Champion" appears a second time remixed with a sample from "You Know How We Do It" which was written by Ice Cube, QDill, T.Life and D. Wansel. 'Til Shiloh also features love songs like "Wanna Be Loved" and "Only Man."
  • "Murderer" To Face Judgment: "Murderer! Blood is on your shoulders / kill I today you cannot kill I tomorrow" start off "Murderer." This song speaks against violence and reminds persons who commit such acts that they will meet their judgment. Banton hits his theme hard in the third verse with the words "Drinking sulphur bitters won't be bitter like your end / only God can help you, no family or friend." Banton and Clement Dodd penned the lyrics and included biblical references such as Noah's children, Daniel and the first verse of Psalms 121.
  • "Not An Easy Road" is an Inspiring Reggae Song: Banton wrote this song as a testament to perseverance and faith. His edgy lyrics include "Upon my face I've got to put on a smile / Make up my mind just to walk more miles." The chorus sings "It's not an easy road / many see the glamor an the glitter / and think it's a bed of rose."
  • "Chuck It So" is a Serious Song: In "Chuck It So," Buju Banton reminds the 'bullies' and criminals to be mindful of the wicked actions. A steady dancehall beat with piercing lyrics chanted in Banton gruff voice make this song chilling. The hook is "How you a go on like bully so / on the border line you not going."
  • 'Til Shiloh's Love Anthem is "Wanna Be Loved": Marcia Griffiths sings background vocals on Buju Banton's "Wanna Be Loved." In this song, Banton expresses his need for love. He sings "been searching for a long long time / for that oh so true love" and "show me you care, up front and boldly." Banton gets metaphorical with the lyrics and sings "I'm like waiting on some honey / but there aint no queen bee."
Buju Banton, a superbly talented Jamaican artist, has released almost one dozen reggae albums. One of his albums in which has a dancehall and reggae appeal is 'Til Shiloh. Songs like "Murderer" and "Champion" make this a great reggae and dancehall album.

Why is Jason the bad guy on TV?

The Jason movie series Friday The 13th portrayed Jason as a "madman" as we say in the Caribbean. Jason on Couples' Retreat was a moron who was a control freak and even seemed to plan how he would have sex. Jason on The Game was another control freak who controlled his family through his finances and hated to see others achieve more than him.

If your name is Jason, I'll still assume that you are a normal person upon first meeting. However, if you start acting funny, we may start jumping to conclusions that you are a "madman".

I know I have only provided three movies with Jason characters, but that's all I could remember. Maybe those Jason characters just had a hard start in life and they are acting out....

YEAH.

How to Create a Blog: It's Easy and Fun to Make a Blog

Creating a blog is fun and easy because a blog represents a person's personal feelings and creativity. Learn how to create a blog in easy steps.

Diaries, journals and blogs provide a healthy medium for self-expression and for improving writing skills. A blog is the online way to keep a journal of daily activities, thoughts, poetry or photography. Before creating the blog, it is important to think about why the blog is being made and who will be able to access the information.

Decide What to Express in the Blog
The blog can be about whatever the writer chooses to share. This choice will also determine the online blog website that will be used. Poetry or articles can be also be expressed in the blog for sharing. If the blog is to be used like a diary, then the setting would have to be made private so that others cannot access the information.

Choose the Blog Website
There are many options such as WordPress.com or Blogger.com and social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace also offer blogs to their users. Most blog sites require a username and password and in some cases the blog can be made private, available only to the friend circle or open to the general public.

Format and Layout the Blog
Since a blog is a personal 'web log', users can set the layout based on the templates available on the chosen site. Be creative and choose colors that are warm and fonts that are easy to read. It makes no sense to choose a black background with navy blue text because it would be difficult to read. Photos also add a fresh look to the blog. Be sure to think before posting personal or contact information in the profile to avoid identity theft.

Get Started on the Blog
It is simple to start a blog because a personal blog is not like a school assignment. Making a 'web log' is a choice to share information. Don't over-think the content to add. Instead consider the focus for the blog, think of the topic and start brainstorming and writing. If the blog is created to share photos, a description of the photo can be added to describe the lighting and the inspiration behind the picture. A blog is a good way to express feelings and thoughts.

Making a blog is easy and can be managed with little effort. After deciding what will be expressed in the blog, be sure to choose a blog website that is suitable, layout the page and start writing.

Why I Love John Legend

Hit Music

I love any artist that steps out of the normal realm of popular music. Singers like Tanya Stephens, Queen Ifrica and Usher bring new fresh music with amazing instrumentals and tight lyrics.

John Legend sings a lot about infidelity and the perils of love. His music gives that neo-soul feel with the infusion of actual instruments especially the piano - like in the intro of the song "Get Lifted" and everyone's favorite "Ordinary People".

He tells it to us straight like in "Used to Love You". He gets upbeat and hip hop in "Green Light". He gets hard with his Grammy wins by collaborating with the "Roots". He goes reggae with Buju Banton in "Can't Be My Lover" and with Estelle in "No Other Love". In "I Can Change" he links with Snoop Dogg and claims that he can change his cheating ways.

While some people may say, why would you want to hear songs about cheating, this is a part of life. Poetry in music is designed to express the stresses - the realities that people are facing daily. Relationships are a fundamental part of our daily life and music can help to give us some enjoyment from the stress.

As a poet, I seek music with interesting and deep lyrics which are outside of the norm. I may listen to Rhianna or Beyonce, but mainly because of the beat first because I do love to dance. I'll add that my favorite Beyonce song is "Me, Myself & I" because it was enjoyable listening to it and watching the video.

However, I love John Legend's style and his flavor of music. He truly is an Evolver because he always brings something fresh. When I first heard "Green Light" I could not believe the guy who sang the quiet "Ordinary People" could get so 'funkdafied' - but I love the song!

Kudos to John Legend for giving us good music!

Keeping Food Safe: How to Prevent Foodborne Illnesses

You may be eating food filled with bacteria that could cause serious illnesses. Learn how to carefully handle and store food to keep your family safe.

In the United States, food safety inspections are normal at establishments that prepare food for sale. Such inspections are necessary to protect the consumers from illnesses which can result from poorly prepared or handled food and to alleviate outbreaks linked to tainted food. At home, the onus is upon the entire family to ensure that food is safely handled and stored to prevent foodborne illnesses. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), annually approximately "76 million illnesses occur, more than 300,000 persons are hospitalized, and 5,000 die from foodborne illness."

How Foodborne Illnesses Make Us Sick
Food can make us sick through intoxication or infection. According to "Applied Foodservice Sanitation" (Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, 1995), intoxication when it comes to food means that toxins or poisons from bacteria or mold growth are present in ingested food and cause illness such as nausea and vomiting. A foodborne infection, on the other hand, is a foodborne illness which results from eating food that contains living harmful micro-organisms. A common symptom of an infection is diarrhea. Whether the food-related illness is linked to an infection such as Salmonellosis or an intoxication such as Staphylococcus, there will be some discomfort to the affected person.

How Bacteria Can Spread in Food
Bacteria, toxins or poisons can spread through domestic and wild animals, humans, improperly processed canned goods, cooked and raw foods and water. A common foodborne illness such as salmonellosis, caused by the bacteria salmonella, can be transmitted from infected poultry, meat and the by-products of these animals when proper food safety measures such as cooking and storing food at the optimal temperatures are not followed. Another common illness, Staphylococcus occurs when cooked or prepared foods such as potato salad, cheese or ham become contaminated with bacteria.

Food Safety Measures
It is very each for bacteria to spread and contaminate food and make people sick. Below are some helpful safety measures which can aid in reducing foodborne illnesses.
  • Keep Hands Clean: Food preparers are constantly encouraged to wash hands thoroughly. Bacteria from feces, nasal passages or from other foods can easily spread from hands to food items that are still in the preparation stage. Staphylococcus can easily be spread from a cook who scratches a pimple and does not wash his hands.
  • Avoid Damaged Canned Goods: If cans are swollen, frothing or show any signs of damage, discard immediately. "Applied Food Service Sanitation" warns that food from cans that are damaged should not even be tasted to avoid illness and death from botulism, which can attack the nervous system.
  • Keep Foods at Safe Temperatures: The Food Safety and Inspection Service(FSIS) website states that "bacteria multiply rapidly between 40 °F and 140 °F (and) to keep food out of this "Danger Zone," keep cold food cold and hot food hot". Refrigerated food should be stored at 40 °F or below in the refrigerator and in the freezer at 0 °F or below. Cooked food must be cooked at a safe minimum internal temperature. Meat such as beef, veal and lamb steaks, roasts, and chops may be cooked to 145 °F and all cuts of pork, ground beef, veal and lamb must be cooked to at a temperature 160 °F. All poultry should reach a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F. Hot cooked food must be maintained at temperatures 140 °F or above and when re-heating, the temperature should be 165 °F.
  • Guard Food Against Cross-Contamination: Cross-contamination can occur when utensils, cutting boards and counter surfaces are not cleaned and sanitized when cooking or preparing more than one type of food. A knife that cut a chicken infected with salmonella and then is used without being washed to cut beef can spread the bacteria.
  • Purchase Produce Only from Reputable Sources: Produce, especially meat, poultry, fish and the bi-products should be purchased from reputable suppliers who meet health and safety standards.
  • Listen out for advisories and food recalls: On February 25, 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall for all lots of 25lb boxes of Crushed Red Pepper sold by Wholesome Spice of Brooklyn, New York between April 6, 2009 to January 20, 2010 because the pepper may have possibly been contaminated with salmonella. While there have been no confirmed cases of Salmonellosis linked to the product, it is important to remain vigilant of such recalls and information.
Today, it is important to be vigilant about food safety and health. While foodborne illnesses cannot be completely avoided, having the basic knowledge about the illnesses and some measures to prevent them can aid in keeping a family healthy. The list of safety measures given are not exhaustive but provide a basic foundation for keeping food safe. Visit the CDC, FDA and FSIS websites for more information on food safety and for updates on food recalls.

Ever Get Thrown "Under the Bus"?

2011 has started off as my getting "thrown under the bus" year. Everywhere I turn, it seems like people are trying to set me up to look stupid. Fortunately for me, I keep stepping and rising. No matter what you do in your family, organization or in life in general, there will always seem to be someone or some persons who are out to get you.

But are they really trying to get you? Is it all in your mind? Somethings, difficult situations occur and we want to blame others for our failures and misfortunes. Things will never go perfectly in life. I always say that anything that is too perfect usually has too many flaws.

Whether they are trying to get you or if you are just paranoid or insecure about your various relationships, you can't let other people hold you back. Get your "Shine" on! You can shine quietly and reap the rewards of your achievements or you can share your accomplishments with those who around you so that you can inspire them.

There are days when that sinking feeling will come and someone was really trying to get you - to make you look bad. I've had one of those days recentlly and I realized the other persons involved just can not accept change. They may not be intimidated but they only see things from one spectrum. I was "under the bus" but the key persons in the end still worked with me because they knew that I did try my best.

If you are "under the bus", don't stay there! Get up and out and show everyone that no matter the size of the missile sent your way, you are destined for greatness and you will "shine"!

Stepping Towards Your Educational Goals - Think SWOT

We all need to celebrate each other's accomplishments. I am proud of co-worker Theodore James, who was able to achieve his BS. Kudos to TJ!

As I think about my days at the BVI Community College, now the HL Stoutt Community College, UVI and then at Cornell University, I see my growth and progress towards adulthood. My Facebook status today is "I'm executing a master plan" and the steps I took towards attaining my higher education have taken me this far and I know that while God grants me life, his overall plan may take me further.

Education is important whether you aim for a certification in your trade or a Masters or Bachelors Degree. However, you have to chart your plan while looking at your strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. Everyone wants to be successful so while we want to live on the edge and have fun all day, we still need to take careful consideration when making decisions that will affect our lives in the future.

And YES, you should look at yourself through the lens of a SWOT! When I entered UVI in 1995, my Strengths were my math skills, being friendly and diligent. My Weaknesses were my not-so-good english skills and lack of guidance. The Opportunities were everywhere because UVI offered good professors, diverse students, various organizations and a sound curriculum. The biggest Threat was fear of failure.

Whether you are aiming to be an attorney, a mechanic, a hair-stylist or a nanny, get your papers - degree or certification and stay abreast of changes/updates in your profession. Don't let the unseen threats hold you back because you will only live in regret if you do try!

POEM: Bottled Up

Is my love locked down?
cause if it is
please lock me up
for holding back love
cause lusting won't get you anywhere
expressing your feelings will
even when you get turned down
cause turned down is still
better than locked down
locked up feelings
suppressed in a
heart-shaped bottle

I started this poem a long time ago and only God knows if I did finish it. I do like its length and simplicity so it will stay as is.

Saying NO When It Needs To Be Said

Humans seem to want to always please each other. However, there are days when we need to say "no" to a request. This must happen at home, on the job, in the church and just in life in general.

Don't be a patsy or pushover
If you are headed to Sea Cows Bay from Road Town at 1:00pm for a 1:30pm appointment, should you agree to take someone to East End? You can offer to find them a taxi but you really can't be in two places at one time.

What about those situations on the job where you know that your co-workers like to set you up to do the grunge work? You can offer assistance but you must say "no" at some point or you will be labelled the office pushover who takes on everyone's task.

Get a spine!
I have had to say "no" on several occassions starting from last year. I am simply tired of being taken for granted. of course on the job, you have to weigh decisions out wisely. Sometimes a conversation with a supervisor can help when you see everyone pulling at you for help. When you are a new employee, they try to orient you to become their slave in some organizations. Sometimes, supervisors are guilty of this because they just want someone to make them look good.

It is very sad to know that coworkers just want to know your strengths so that they can in some cases make you weak. If you find yourself handling personal errands daily, you may want to address this. "Any other duties as assigned" still mean duties that relate specifically to the job or organization. Of course, in a lot of cases, the more you assist in other units, the more well-rounded you can become. The setback to that is when you work in an organization rife with corruption and nepotism, you will see others rising and rewarded and there is no recognition for you. For me, that's when it's time to speak with the supervisor and management about opportunities for you to be promoted or have your pay increased.

You must tell them YES but they tell you NO
If you feel that your needs, work and accomplishments are being ignored, it's time to find another job. Don't stay in an organization where you are unhappy or uncomfortable. Work towards getting situations resolved, but if the effort is futile, it's time to move on.

You can still stay "yes" when others ask for help but do not overdraw on your personal time and energy if you know you are not able to or if you are busy. So when your sister calls two minutes for her date asking for you to babysit and you have plans to study, kindly ask her if she can ask someone else to help or let her bring the children later in the evening when they are already sleeping.

Many of us have to learn to balance our time and fulfil our personal duties as well as getting adequate rest. You can't say "yes" to everyone and "no" to your health, family and professional obligations and to yourself!

What Makes You Shine?

Some people can only shine on a job where they can use the talents of others to make them look good. How is your personality? How do you interact with people? Are you an idea giver and an implementer or both? What are you strengths and weaknesses?

Answer these questions honestly and decide how best you can shine daily at your job, in your church and in the community. While I say 'shine', I do not mean overshadowing others or taking credit for what others do. If you are a shy person, I am not expecting you to host an event to give yourself high blood pressure.

Shine with a giving and loving heart. Shine in what you do best. Don't worry about others not seeing how meaningful your contribution is. Your contribution is positive, important and appreciated. Today, many of us face tough situations in the workplace. There's always the co-worker who gives orders but never lifts a finger. There's always someone who never understands anything. There's always the person who gets the promotions and does poor work.

I shine through my personality, my talents and my abilities. There is no one position, organization or another person that can determine how I shine bcause I shine all the time. Wherever the road of life leads you, you are supposed to shine all the time. It may seem cliche but it is the truth. You have to define yourself as a person.

What do you want your eulogy to read? Everyone wants to shine - be brilliant - illuminate - radiate. So let' do it! Set your SMART goals and aim for better. Situations and conflict will always arise but try your best to SHINE!

Ribbon's words for today:

If you have to rely on one or two persons to shine, you may get dusty, rusted and busted. Thank God many of us can think on our feet, see opportunity and make the best of bad situations. Keep moving forward!

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) in the Virgin Islands

UVI is my alma mater!

The University of the Virgin Islands is a four-year university that offers diverse programs and is located on two campuses in the US Virgin Islands.

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) (http://www.uvi.edu) is located on two campuses in St. Thomas and St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). Both campuses offer programs for students interested in pursuing Associate, Bachelor and Master Degrees. This university's tagline is
"Historically American... Uniquely Caribbean... Globally Interactive..." People worldwide became more familiar with UVI after the St. Thomas campus was chosen for the locale of the fourth season of BET's College Hill program.

UVI is an American Institution in the Caribbean
The university "was chartered on March 16, 1962, as the College of the Virgin Islands - a publicly   funded, coeducational, liberal arts institution - by Act No. 862 of the Fourth Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands." The St. Thomas campus opened for classes in 1963 and in 1964, the St. Croix campus was founded. In 1986, the institution was officially renamed the University of the Virgin Islands, as it is called today. UVI is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools.

The University of the Virgin Islands is a Historically Black College and University
UVI is also listed as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). According to US Department of Education via The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, the definition of HBCU is "...any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans...."

Student Life at the University of the Virgin Islands
The University of the Virgin Islands serves students from the US and British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Martin/St. Marteen, Dominica and other Caribbean islands as well as the USA and other countries. Between the two campuses, UVI has over 2,500 students. Both islands have on-campus student housing, libraries and computer labs.

Students who are first-time visitors to the US Virgin Islands should take advantage of living in the territory while studying. St. Thomas and St. Croix have rich history and culture and offer annual carnival celebrations, diverse religious activities, great shopping and pristine beaches. It is also affordable to travel to the other US Virgin - St. John and the neighboring British Virgin Islands.

UVI Provides a Strong Academic Program
Students who have a keen interest in studying Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Nursing, and Science and Mathematics will do well at UVI. The previously named fields of study comprise UVI's five academic divisions or schools. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are available to students in these different schools.

Students in the Virgin Islands, Caribbean, USA or anywhere in the world attend the University of the Virgin Islands because it is an American institution that offers attractive programs and student activities. Nestled in the US Virgins of St. Thomas and St. Croix, UVI offers a great experience for students.
