Poem: Dull

I might not be the sharpest pin in the cushion
nor the brightest bulb in the pack
but I know that Jesus loves me
just as I am
so while you may sit and wonder
make up stories about fantasy
I've got my eye in focus
cause my God
does not discriminate
or encourages hate
so while I may seem dull
or poor or not so hot
it does not matter
cause God's got my back
and I'll make it

Prayer for August 13, 2012

Dear God,

I bring this prayer to you in humblesness begging for your mercy upon us. You are an awesome God and you made miracles in the past, today and you will forever. I pray asking for your Holy Spirit to guide us along the way. Keep us on the sheltered side, Lord and order our footsteps. Teach us to be patient, kind and giving. In your name I pray.

AMEN

POEM: My Prize

My eye is on the prize
and while I'm not always wise
I am a hard worker
definitely not a joker
cause poker
is not my style
and while
you may think and do
differently, I'm true
to my word
cause that word is like a sword
and it's best to stay on the right side
and glide with time
to develop your mind
cause one day
you'll find your way
and then you'll see it will pay
cause nothing good
ever comes the easy way

Umm.. yes, my hair is all natural

This hair craze is very interesting. I've been wearing my hair without relaxer since 1996 and I am happy for my choice. I have thick and lovely hair that is manageable and fun. It really tickles me that only now many people start to appreciate unrelaxed hair. My fellow blogger, Lekishma, shared how people would tell her that they can't manage with natural hair.

Um..are they serious? They prefer spend to hundreds of dollars on hair burning lye. My girl JujuBee, she is a miracle worker when it comes to hair. She can hook up your actual hair or give you a great weave that you can use in transition or as a protective style.

Ladies, it's your scalp and your hair. Treat it well. I know I won't be wearing any relaxers or texturizers.  I prefer to be bald. Dreadlocks are too high maintenance for me. I have a mortgage to pay and can't be bothered with all that drama.

Hmmm I feel an afro coming on!

Controlling People

People always want to control you and tell you what moves you should make in your life. You have to think and stand up for yourself. The popular opinion is like pop music - it fades from memory. I'm not saying that you should ignore positive advice, but you have to have a mind for yourself. People have tried to control me and I am not into that nonsense.

I can remember a former boss encouraging me not to start college studies at UVI. I have my degree today. I can remember another one telling not to go to Cornell University. I have my transcript today to show. Another told me that when I start his work, I won't have time for poetry. I have a poem that can be shared for every day of the year.

They all think they know what's best and many don't have their lives together. I can give life stories - not for every situtation but some worthy. People watch me and think I have the world but they don't know what I have sacrificed. Actually, I don't care what they think. As I said in one of my FB statuses the other day, when I buy from Red Cross and hunt the $1 deals, I know I owe noone.

I wrote the other day about a forward woman and I am proud to say that I have not had to ask her for food, clothing or shelter. My God is my real joy giver and people will always just be simple minded people.

So, if anyone is on your back, ignore them or get away from them. Don't wait to snap.

New Challenges

I have tried so many things in my life and I am not daunted by a challenge. I have been given an opportunity to take on a new challenge and I am going for it all the way. I was able to appear on local radio last Thursday and asked my children to listen in. They seemed to be fascinated when I asked them how I sounded. They say they would have been scared. They heard an older child express fear of performing in public and seemed to have taken on this word in their vocabulary. I am trying to convince them otherwise.

I find that some children at their school lack confidence. This lack of confidence really hampers you later on in life. I want my children to be the best at what they choose to. My daughter is an artist and athlete. My son has a great singing voice. I am a poet and writer. If they do not want to pursue where they talents are strongest, I will not force them. However, I will show them where my talents have taken me.

I don't have a silver spoon despite what many people think. I work hard for what I have. I make sacrifices many would not. I am taking on this challenge with full courage and plan to succeed with my God's help.

Prayer for August 2, 2012

Dear God,

Thank you for another day that we are able to breathe the air and experience life. Your blessings are countless and for this we are thankful. We are humbled by your wonders and acknowledge how small we are compared to the your great miracles. Father, your love is limitless and extends far beyond our expectations. You comfort the sad, encourage the broken, heal the sick, love the criminal and you never leave the righteous forsaken. No mortal can do what my God can do and Lord, we praise your name for this. We pray for your continued mercies and miracles as we walk daily in faith that your love will never leave us.

AMEN
