POEM: Thoughts

Thoughts

I have thoughts
so many
so hefty
so crazy
I write them
I live them
keeping them positive
is hard
but with God
I can survive
and push through walls
face the threats
and stand up tall

Let's Stay Together: A Successful Season 1

Let's Stay Together, BET's new sitcom for 2011 brought viewers romance and comedy as the characters dealt with their various relationship issues.

Thirteen great episodes encompassed the first season of Let's Stay Together, BET's new sitcom launched in 2011. Let's Stay Together was created by Jacque Edmonds Cofer , who also executive produced the sitcom. Cofer has written for other shows like Martin, Living Single, Moesha and All About The Andersons. She shared that Let's Stay Together was conceptualized as "basically a romantic comedy".

Cast of Let's Stay Together
Cofer worked with a cast of young and upcoming actors including Nadine Ellis as "Stacy" and Bert Belasco as "Charles", Stacy's fiance. Joyful Drake plays "Tasha" and her husband is "Jamal" played by RonReaco Lee. Erica Hubbard carries the role of  Charles' happy sister "Kita". Other actors who appeared on the show include Jackee Harry from 227 and Sister, Sister who plays Charles' mom. Charles's dad is played by Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. Ron Canada, who has appeared on Law & Order, Boston Legal and Murder One, acts as Stacy and Tasha's dad. Their mom is played by Daphne Reid Maxwell, who replaced Janet Hubert on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 1990s.

Other actors who appeared on Let's Stay Together include Kim Whitley from Living Single, Countess Vaughn from The Parkers as Kita's friend, Henry Simmons from Madea's Family Reunion (2006) as Stacy's patient's father and date and Eva Pickford from America's Next Top Mode as another of Kita's friends. Anna Maria Horsford from Amen played the wedding planner, Tichina Arnold from Everybody Hates Chris acted as the counselor and Thomas Mikal Ford from Martin as the pastor also made appearances on the show.

Season 1 of Let's Stay Together Overview
On Season 1, fans of the show were able to watch Charles and Stacy live together and then separate before getting back together. We saw Jamal and Tasha with the fiery romance of newlyweds with twin babies and financial shortcomings. Kita surprisingly was everybody's girl and she looked out for all the other characters.
  • Charles and Stacy: Charles and Stacy seemed to be very romantic even though they did not always agree on every subject or issue that arose in the relationship. They broke up after Stacy struggled to settle on a wedding date, even after the help of the wedding planner that Charles hired. Charles continued to get frustrated as Stacy chose a fictitious date of June 31 for the wedding and he eventually moved out of Stacy's home. They dealt with the seperation in different ways but ended up clashing as they both unknowingly showed up at a dinner that Jamal and Tasha planned with dates. It was at that time, after tempers flared, that they finally chose a wedding date.
  • Tasha and Jamal: These fun young newlywed parents seemed to always seek an opportunity to earn money. Tasha tried to create a baby skincare line, she wrote a children's book and she also tried to join an elitist women's group. Tasha stands as the bossy one in the relationship and who likes to be the center of attention. However Jamal stood up to her in relation to her wanting to dress his son as a girl for a photo shoot. He also actually cut up the cards in one episode even though Tasha jokingly asked her dad to hit him.
  • Kita: Kita has lent a helping hand to every other character but has remained single during the first season. She babysat for Jamal and Tasha which caused some tension for the newlyweds since Kita's good rapport with the children and her command of housework seemed to outshine Tasha. Kita offered advice to all the characters at some point and she especially tried to encourage Charles to work hard not to lose Stacy. On one episode, Kita took a vow of silence and she showed the angst of not being able to share her ideas with the others during that time.

Let's Stay Together Season Finale
The finale episode began with a rehearsal dinner on the day before the wedding. The parents were all there to celebrate what seemed to be an astronomical achievement for this couple. Stacy's mom, Juanita, claimed that she introduced Charles and Stacy and clips revealed the first interactions between the couple at Stacy's home. Viewers were also able to see when Charles proposed at Stacy's home with flowers and candles in the kitchen he built for her. He stooped on one bended knee and asked her to be in his wife and it was shared that he moved in one week later.

As the episode progressed, Charles did not seem to be ready for the wedding. He seemed to be having a lot of second thoughts and is shown trying to smoke a cigarette just before the ceremony. There is irony because Stacy was the one who seemed to be having second thoughts throughout the season but she appeared to be calm and ready. Although Charles was a bit shaky, he did make it to the altar. Stacy shared her thoughts at the beginning of the ceremony from 1 Corinthians and Charles sang "Never" by Jahiem.

As the ceremony progressed, Charles ran out because he forgot a letter in the car that would tell Stacy how much he loved her. The final scene of this episode reveals that he got stuck in an elevator that was not working and the wedding was postponed. In addition, an ex-boyfriend of Tasha's appeared at the wedding, apparently a former client of Charles, and she seemed to be uncomfortable with his presence, yet reminiscent of the past.

With all that has happened on Season 1 of Let's Stay Together, viewers are already anticipating another season. The burning queries asked are about the wedding ceremony, the strange appearance
of Tasha's ex and if Kita will ever find someone to love her.

Modest or Perfect: Are You Within Your Means

The perfect person does not exist. We have these crazy standards of beauty and excellence that only serve to drive people crazy. We have people who are digging themselves in debt for material things just to fit in and play a role or show an image.

I watch Suze Orman from time to time and I like her show. I think more people need to watch it and be realistic with themselves on their finances. Why are we buying expensive cell phones if we can't afford to buy lunch? Furthermore, shouldn't we walk with lunch so that we can splurge on something nice every month? Better yet, why can't we save that money.

When my car broke down, everyone had the most advice for me. Of course, I actually listened and then I sold the car. The repair would cost more than the deposit on a new car so I had to make a choice. I catch the bus now and I cut down on window-shopping and being up and down all over the place spending money. Most people frown on catching the bus but I no longer worry about brakes, tires, car insurance or the soaring gas prices. I learn to make do, tag along if necessary and plan my trips.

Plus I think I adjust to situations wells - in most cases. I am a complainer because I just can't take too much nonsense. However, when it comes to finances, I make do and make things happen to work in my favor. I don't beg, I don't steal and I try my best not to be a bother to the people around me.

I don't mix money with friends at all. I like to know that we can help each other and I am willing to help in any way I can. I have very good people around me and I am thankful to God for them. However, we all have that one or two around us who like to borrow money. Some borrow because they are in tight situations and there are others who live beyond their means and use someone else to catch up.

We all can be financially enabled but we have to make tough decisions. I shop at sales - from the grocery, clothing stores, yard sales, etc. I have to find ways to make ends meet. I walk with luch everyday and if I do need to buy food, I opt to have a slice of pizza or something under $5. I would have liked a parttime job but with my children I have to make time for them. So I prefer an online writing gig so that I can work from home.

If we want to have the awesome material things, we have to make serious decisions. Perfection can never be attained. Live comfortably while setting realistic savings goals and stay out of deep debt. A mortgage or a land loan is a much better investment than a $30K SUV. Getting a loan and using the money for saving while accelerating the loan payments are better than buying 3 tvs for one home.

Motto - live within your means.

If I'm in the Right Mood, You Might Get the Busy Signal

From looking through my blog, you will notice that I am a big fan of music. Reggae is one of my favorite genres but I also enjoy R&B and Hip Hop. I pretty much prefer the old school R&B and Hip Hop to the sometimes tasteless and lyrically empty music that is heard on the airwaves today.

I don't mind the bubblegum music but I will not buy it because it's not lasting music. You forget them when the gum is chewed. Looking back, some people may have called Hip Hop a passing fad but it has lasted. Unfortunately, the artists are becoming more empty and materialistic so many of them are passing through as the hot topic today and forgotten tomorrow. Some very talented artists have resorted to showing skin or chat trash so that their music can be noticed. For some, like Common, they stick to their style of music but try to infuse new beats to that enhance the lyrical content and flow.

Reggae also has its passing fads because building star power in the Caribbean is one thing but making it in the US and UK is another level. I love Sean Paul's style although he is more on the dancehall tip. His voice is different but I realize he's not the best dancer. He made a successful crossover to the US and UK and continues to bring some great hits.

Reggae artists who have a lot to offer include Busy Signal, Queen Ifrica, Richie Spice, Jah Cure, Etana, Alaine and Tarrus Riley. Of course I must mention Pressure and Niyorah from the USVI, Romain Virgo, Lutah Fyah etc who I love as well. I can not say that these artists write their lyrics but if they do, kudos on great lyrical content.

Reggae is mellow yet racy and uplifting ...with a great beat. The lyrics have gone past uprising, mellow moods and fire burning. Reggae's content has touched every vice and every thing that is good. Pull some records from Marley, Tosh, Isaacs, Miller, Hill and so forth. Then pull some Tanya Stevens, Lady Saw, Movado etc and see that reggae and dancehall is the Caribbean voice even when there is a negative voice spoken.

So if I'm in the right mood, you might get Busy Signal's music when you visit me - physically or via internet.

Crooked or Straight Describes "All a We"

Unscrupulous people are all around us. They may be in your family, in your church, on your job, in your bank and so on. There is always a crook or two around us. We shouldn't hate them because of their dirty ways or because they seem to always get ahead. We shouldn't envy them either.

I don't even bother to feel sorry for them because some of them are not worth it. In some cases after a run-in, I say THANKS! I've learned from them how not to be a crook or even a 'fake' Christian or fake friend putting on airs. I feel the worst about persons in the church who on one hand work to win souls and then backbite the same souls. I don't know if we should call that an oxymoron or just call them 'morons' for being so hypocritical. What are you telling the young christians?

We have our bad ways and some may have more than others. As humans, we all have some measure of greed or lust, we all lie and many of us steal time or supplies from our jobs. There is truth in that.

If you are a crooked person reading this, try to run straight for once. I am not sraight every day and I have some crooked ways like everybody else but I never try to be openly deceitful or try to be underhanded. Sometimes people's perceptions lead them to think that you are, but once you know that you did the right thing, tell them "fire for you" (V.I. Slang).

All we can do is try our best everyday to do the right thing and live right with our neighbors and friends.

Season 4 of The Game on BET Recap

We saw many dramatic moments on The Game during Season 4 on BET. Tasha, Jason, Kelly, Derwin, Malik and Melanie had us glued to the television screen.

Season 4 of The Game on BET brought viewers a lot of drama in 2011. BET brought back the show, which is the first time that a live sitcom that was cancelled was brought back to television with a new season. We saw the same characters from the original CW show with the addition of a few new faces - new characters who took the drama to another level.
Mrs. Melanie Barnett-Davis
Season 4 shows Mr. and Mrs. Derwin Davis as a couple two years into marriage. The writers brought back "Janay" played by Gabrielle Dennis (the mother of Derwin Jr., also called DJ), for a little drama between her and "Melanie" (Tia Mowry-Hardict). One of Melanie's claims continued to be that Janay wanted what she and Derwin had - a great life. Melanie gave DJ a DNA test which gave a false result that Derwin was not his father. After the drama behind the DNA test, Melanie realized that unknown to her, Derwin was visiting Janay's home weekly to play with DJ. In Season 4, Melanie became the president of the Sunbeams, the wives and significant others of the San Diego Sabers football team.

She had a run-in with "Jazz", played by Lashontae Heckard, in relation to the right 'role models' since Jazz had slept with Jason, Derwin, Malik and other players before settling with Juvon, who is played by Bumper Robinson who we know from Amen and Family Matters. The last episodes of Season 4 showed Melanie and Derwin trying to get pregnant. Despite all her trying, Melanie was not successful. The final episode showed Melanie and Derwin visiting the doctor. When the doctor asked if Melanie had ever had an abortion, Derwin's demeanor changed. That episode ended with Derwin not asking whether Melanie had had an abortion, but asking if the baby would have been his.

Derwin Davis - The Star Receiver
In this season, "Derwin", who is  played by Pooch Hall, continued his 'church-boy' image while being a rising athlete who still showed genuine care for his family and friends in always wanting to be the problem solver. With Jason's retirement and Malik's misfortunes, Derwin literally became the strongest athlete on the team. However, with all his success, Melanie applied pressure to Derwin on several occasions. When she informed Derwin about the false result of the DNA test, she convinced him to confront Janay. She pressured him to have her parents visit although the previous seasons showed that her parents did not favor Derwin. After her parents gave Derwin high praise on the Season 4 visit, Melanie got jealous and displayed her typical 'drama queen' tirade.

Jason Pitts - Retired Player and Dad
"Jason", Coby Bell, was 'retired' by the Sabers and ended up working with basketball great Chris Webber on a show called "Benched". Jason had several fights with his ex-wife, Kelly and also their daughter, "Brittany 'Brit-Brat' Pitts" who on this season was played by Kathlynn Simone Smith. To save Brittany from a destructive lifestyle, after she posed lightly-clad on the internet and stole Tasha's weed for her friends, Jason quit "Benched" to look after her. On the finale episode, Jason met "Quan Kirkland", the Saber's new quarterback played by Charles Michael Davis. What caught Jason's attention was that Quan seemed to be dating "Camille", Stacy Dash, Jason's ex-girlfriend from the previous season.

Kelly Pitts - The Mom and Ex-Wife
Brittany Daniels returned as "Kelly Pitts" but the character did not appear in all the episodes. Kelly was supposed to star in a reality show about football wives. She tried to interject the show at every moment by interrupting a Sunbeam meeting and ladies' night out with her camera crew. Jason repeatedly asked Kelly to quit her show but she finally listened when their daughter, Brittany, posted the unacceptable photographs on the internet. After Kelly tried to discipline Brittany and saw the daughter's reaction, she quit the reality show and told Jason that she needed some time to get herself together. Kelly did not appear in the final episodes of The Game in Season 4.

Tasha Mack - Struggling With Relationships
"Tasha", as usual, still had problems with men in Season 4. She had the young love interest 'Dante' played by Terrance J from BET's 106 & Park. Their relationship did not work out and then she moved into a whirlwind relationship with a supposedly dying man, "Bo," played by Mario Van Peebles, who ended up being a player in the end. Tasha's relationships with the other females, Kelly and Melanie, had ups and downs too. Tasha made up with Kelly during the season but by the finale episode, Derwin and Melanie fired Tasha as Derwin's manager.

Malik Wright - The Quarterback's Ups and Downs
"Malik,' Hosea Chanchez's role, had a captivatingly dramatic season. His assault of a police officer started a downward spiraling set of behavior. One of Malik's issues was that "TeeTee," still played by Barry Floyd, resigned as Malik's wingman and started a business selling fried chicken with TeeTee's new love interest. Malik eventually had relations with TeeTee's girl, which TeeTee eventually forgave Malik for. Malik, at the same time, was sleeping with his new team manager's wife. The manager is played by Michael Beach from the movie Soul Food and his wife, 'Parker" is played by Meagan Good.

With all the negativity Malik was reeking, he opted to go to rehab. At first rehab had no impact until Malik met "Jenna, played by Tia Sumpter, during the rehab stint. Malik pronounced his love for Jenna on The Monique Show by imitating the Tom Cruise's visit on The Oprah Show where he jumped on the couch. Unfortunately for Malik, Parker blackmailed him about their infidelities until he found the strength to tell her that she needed to fix her relationship with her husband. Parker did and admitted to the husband that she had an affair with Malik.

This was said in front of Jenna who cut off Malik. The affair with Parker also cost Malik his quarterback status on the team as the manager threatened to leave him on the bench to rot. Tasha took back Malik as a client and in the final episode, Jenna drove back to Malik's house in what seems to be an inebriated state.

Season 4 was an enjoyable season. There are unanswered questions as to the status of all the relationships and only another season or few seasons can really give viewers any closure.

Jah Bami - Ah Man Is Just Ah Man (signs riddim)

Serious song!

Dealing with Frustration and 'Disgusting People'

In the BVI we call anybody who we find overbearing, annoying or miserable  - 'disgusting'. I have been called same and I have described many people by that word. I would say this has been a week of dealing with disgusting people and frustrating situations.

I not only speak for myself but I speak for everyone who has been given a hard time by a loved one, a friend, a boss or other employee, another driver, a teacher, a student, a car, a house, a bank account or whatever got you frustrated.

These situations are tests of our resilience, strength, patience and abilities. They make us scream, cry, 'suck our teeth', swear (under our breath or aloud) and sometimes we take these frustrations out on others. For certain problems, I leave them to God. I sometimes respond verbally or in writting if the matter requires a response. I have a special situation and I have decided that I will be the 'bigger person'. Sometimes, you really have to leave things to God.

Other times, you have to fight. You have to act 'vigilante stylee'. You may need to scream, shout, pout or stamp to get that point across. Whatever you choose to do, whisper a prayer first and launch plan.

I call myself a silent revolutionary
but it depends on the fight
I'm not 'Mary Mary quite contrary'
but I dislike injustice in my eyesight
There are days when it's dark
there are days you choose to fight
There are days when the sun seems black
but no matter what, there is some light
So in this life, battles will come
but it is you that chooses the attack
while things are great for some
other always need or lack
one man can start a revolution
whether silent or vocal
because all we need is healing solution
that improves the physical, mental and spiritual
so don't take my silence for acceptance
because I am looking for change
instead dig deep with your conscience
and respect the silent revolutionary's name

Simple Ways to Save a Few More Dollars

Everyone wants to save money today and with the rising costs of necessities, it is important to put aside funds for emergencies and other savings goals.

Saving money is not only depositing large sums of money into a bank account. Cost cutti
ng techniques can boost the amount of disposable income and this increases the savings potential. While it is strongly encouraged that families enjoy their earnings, it is better to minimize the amount of money that trickles out of the budget by using techniques that can increase the piggy bank's holdings.

Buy Used Items to Cut Costs
While some people frown on buying used items, a trip to the thrift store can save money. At some thrift shops, pots, coats, books, cribs, child seats, plates, silverware, clothing, telephones and many other items can be found. Persons on a tight budget can definitely benefit by saving money on the cost of buying the needed item at full price by buying used.

Walk More, Drive Less
Consider walking short distances instead of driving especially when running errands. Walking provides exercise and relieves the stress of searching for a parking space. This also saves time. Reduce spending on gas while keeping fit running errands

Pack Lunch and Snacks to Work
Fruits are the best snacks from a nutritional standpoint. Purchasing a cup with diced fruit from a deli is more expensive than one apple bought from the grocery store. In addition, packing lunch makes it easier to set budgets for grocery shopping without adding in the cost of daily lunch which can run from $6 to $15 per day.

Use the Debit Card More Than the Credit Card
Shopping with the debit card means that when the money is deducted, it comes from the bank account. A person will pay for what was charged. With the credit card, in addition to the price of the goods, interest accrues especially if the bill is not paid up front. Some credit cards are have annual fees.

Use Energy Saving Bulbs to Save Money
Using these bulbs can definitely cut electricity bills. The initial cost may seem high but these bulbs also last longer than incandescent bulbs.

Set Realistic Savings Goals
Saving is needed for emergencies, short term goals and long term plans. Saving can be done through direct deposit or via manual deposits in the bank. When saving, it is always better to start with a realistic figure that would not push the early withdrawal of the funds. Set up a budget based on the income earned and the predictable expenses with a small contingency amount for emergencies. Based on the amount left, an amount even if it is $25 can be set for monthly deposit. Remember that $25 saved per month results in $300 in one year.

As the cost of living increases, everyone has to make changes so that all their income does not trickle out and they are able to save. Some simple techniques such as using energy saving bulbs, preparing lunch or using the credit card less can help families to save a little more. The key to saving is budgeting and seeking ways to reduce expenses.

Who is the Writer behind the Blog 'Words of Ribbon'

I keep it sweet and I keep it real. I am all about improvement and moving forward. I am also about music and simple living. I am an open book that has no Table of Contents. One page may have a picture and the other poem, while the other has a short essay. I down to earth yet complicated and I have no issue in telling you that.

I like crossword puzzles and Sudoku as much as I enjoy burying my feet in the sand at the beach. I love my children but I hate when they don't listen to me. Some days, I just can't wait for their bed time so I can just chill.

I like my job and throughout my life I have been able to tolerate most supervisors. What I don't like is micro-management because I think supervisors should trust the people they hire. I have been thrown under the bus and try to not to throw others. However, sometimes, a point needs to be made.

I keep a few friends - people who give me inspiration and who I enjoy taking to. They are awesome people who keep me on my toes and I hope I can motivate and encourage them to. I love my family and want the best for them always.

I am 'ribbon' and I love sharing these thoughts with you. I can only hope that you are truly inspired.

Why Do I Write?

Why Do I Write?

I write to express my feelings both literally and figuratively. I like to share my thoughts and writing is a great way to do that. I can pen these thoughts at any time of the day and I can choose to share them with one, a few or many. I can also decide to hold some thoughts private. I share prose, essays or articles via my blog or by email. If it's a larger issue, then I publish locally via online media or newspapers. I share poetry through local newspapers, my blog or Facebook. Some poems I share with a few friends and save those for the anthology.

Some of the writings are to provoke thought, share information or to vent about an issue. I won't call myself the best writer but I am working hard to improve myself. I find that people would try to get me to write speeches or reports because they think I like to write. I do like to write but not about what you want me to write. I write about what I want share or provoke thought about. Some writers can take any topic and write fluidly about it. I like to be able to research and know my subject and be able to share fresh information.

Would I write for money? YES, I have and will continue to do so. I would like to make money from Math, which I think I am good at but the forum has not presented itself yet. I neither want to be a Math teacher not accoutant - tutor maybe. I choose Marketing as a career choice because it is dynamic. I love a challenge but a challenge that I want to take on. I rather hate the project that you think would be good for me. I just never sign on to what others want for me.

My writing has helped me to get a better eye for editing. I stay refreshed on my grammar basics. I do my crossword puzzles as a brain teaser and now I am into Sudoku which really makes the brain work. I am all for stepping into the next level and growing as a writer and overall as a better human being.

POEM: I and You

I and You

I give you one
So you can do for the thousands
You give me promises
Far higher than our mountains
I give you trust
So that you can implement change
You take it and run
Like it’s a children’s game
I don’t ask for much
Just for vigilance, perseverance and good will
You ask for one
And yet I get no promises fulfilled
I make my choice
It is one of the few rights I have
You only listen to my voice
When you want the one that I have
I stand alone in a box
Weighing the choices before me
You stand along the sidelines
While our people live in misery and soon poverty
I, one, with many others
Have to decide our fate
You and a few others
Want to eat all the cake
I, one, with many others
Have to decide our fate
Because it might not be you
Who we let into the gates

Coping with the Rationing or Shortage of Water

Living with the lack of or limited use of water is a harsh reality but there are ways to maintain your family by conserving water daily.

When the supply of water to our homes for drinking, bathing, cleaning and laundry is rationed, it is not easy to cope at first. However, we need to be proactive by adjusting our schedules to utilize water when it is available and we should seek ways to conserve water while being able to stay within our budgets.

Availability of Water is a Worldwide Problem
The availability of water for domestic use is affected by climate change and the rate of our usage among other factors. Because we have not been conserving this most precious element, some countries face water shortages and rationing to keep their reservoirs from running empty. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in an October 25, 2007 Press Release title "Planet's Tougher Problems Persist, UN Report Warns", "Fresh water is declining: by 2025, water use is predicted to have risen by 50 per cent in developing countries and by 18 per cent in the developed world". The Release further shares that "The escalating burden of water demand will become intolerable in water-scarce countries".

Tips for Coping with Rationing and Shortages of Water
For persons who cannot afford elaborate water systems and who do not have cisterns, adequate planning and conservation techniques are essential for a comfortable survival when the water supply's pressure is low or off. Problems with water supply can also occur when there is natural disaster such as a hurricane, earthquake or tornado so it is important to know tips for managing.
  • Store Water for Cleaning and Bathing: When your public water is flowing, then it is a good time to store water in one-gallon or five-gallon containers or buckets but work with containers that can be covered to avoid mosquitoes breeding. Available for a little more cost are larger water tanks that can store 250 gallons and more. Use the best storage device based on where you live and your storage capacity. If you have a cistern, you can always use the tap water to fill it.
  • Use Dish Pans to Wash and Rinse Dishes: It is helpful to use one or two dish pans in the kitchen sink when washing dishes. You can always recycle the rinsing water to wash the next set of dishes. Another helpful tip is to clear all dishes of bones and scraps before washing so that the washing water is not as dingy.
  • Clean and Do Laundry When the Water is On: Some Governments may opt to share a rationing schedule when reservoirs are running low so plan chores and do laundry when the water is on. Also make sure that the toilet tank is full and a bucket is kept to flush the toilet when the tank is emptied.
  • Use Easy Cleaning Solutions: Disinfectant wipes can do easy and quick clean up when the water supply is running low. Swifters and other such mops can also be helpful to keep the floors clean.
  • Conserving Water in the Shower: While personal hygiene cannot be comprised, consider using less water by bathing with a sponge or washrag to apply soap to your body and then rinse off your entire body at one time.
  • Conserving Water in the Garden: If your plants are suffering from the lack of water, you can implement a simple drip irrigation system that you run in the morning or late evening. You can also opt to grow plants that do not require a lot of water to survive or hardy plants that can days without water.

It is not easy dealing with the lack of water in the home, but with the global consumption of water and the bleak outlook for the future, if we do not start to seriously conserve our water resources, we will have no choice but to cope with water shortages.

Fun Hair Accessories for Girls: Barrettes, Ponytails & Ribbons

Dress up your daughter's hair with ponytails, barrettes and ribbons. These fun hair accessories can add flavor to your daughter's outfit at little cost.

Parents always want their daughters to look their best from head to toe. A pretty outfit with matching shoes looks great but adding some fun accessories to a child's hair can make her feel prettier. Simple accessories like hair clips, ponytail holders and ribbons are inexpensive and are a staple in little girls' hair in the Virgin Islands and Caribbean. These fun accessories can work even if your daughter's hair is naturally straight or tight-curled. Hair clips or barrettes, ponytail holders and ribbons can also be added to braided hair and for special occasions like a Christmas program, graduation or a wedding. While it is important to make your daughter look great, be mindful that some accessories can be harmful to your daughter's hair.

Hair Clips are Colorful and Fun
Hair clips or barrettes are nice for little girls because these items come in a wide range of colors and sizes. Some hair clips are more designed for the tip of a plait or braid where the hair is not as thick or f or straight hair. There are also larger hair clips that are designed for thicker or tight-curled hair.

Ponytail Holders & Scrunchies are Great to Hold Hair
Ponytails and scrunchies also are fun accessories because they can hold an entire head of hair or can make it easy to divide the hair in smaller sections with several ponytails. Do note that rubber bands and ponytail holders can pull at the hair and cause it to break. Ponytail holders, if pulled too tight very often, can cause the hairline to recede.

Ribbons Add the Extra Flavor to a Little Girl's Hair
Ribbons are very cheap accessories which also are available in an assortment of colors. Ribbons are not as harsh as other accessories because they can be easily slackened to relieve tightness. Ribbons are available in a variety of widths but it is best to choose your daughter's ribbons based on her age and size and for the function she's attending. A good length for a child's ribbon is between 16 to 24 inches. The shorter ribbons are best for the toddlers and the longer ribbons for the older girls.

Tips for Girl's Hair Accessories
Look for rubber bands with satin or nylon over the elastic and plastic clips/barrettes with smooth teeth. Also, try not to overburden your child's hair with too many accessories to make her look like a Christmas tree. For example, if your daughter's hair has ten ponytails, then a ribbon is not needed for every bubble.

A Note on Hair Beads
Hair beads are not the best hair accessory for infants and toddlers. The beads could fall out and a child may swallow one. Also if time is not taken to remove the beads from the hair, this could also lead to breakage.

Parents have to ensure that their little girl's hair is properly moisturized and note that it may be better to remove accessories before your child goes to sleep in the evenings. Also, be mindful of your daughter's age because as girls mature, they tend not to want too many ponytails, clips or ribbons in their hair. Have fun with ponytail holders, barrettes and ribbons to make your little girl's hair look great.

Why can't we all get along...

I sometimes wonder why we humans can't get along. Vices like greed, jealousy and resentment may be the cause. Some of us like to see our brother kept down, while other do their best to keep that brother down. It is sad that we have to live like this especially when times are so volatile.

We have a duty to be good to each other and to be our 'brother's keeper'. We don't have to be pushovers or floor mats but we have to be good to each other. We have to respect each other and instead of laying traps for one another. We need to set positive examples and encourage one another in the right things.

Congratulate your brother or sister for making a good decision or for being promoted. Show appreciation when someone shows that they have your back. Let us reflect on the good and also on the bad because the bad things that happen are life lesssons for us.

Tenor Saw - Run Come Call Me

This is awesome reggae song from the 1980s. I love the lyrics because sometimes that's how I feel - if you call me to do work, offer an incentive! It's not every time you look for money when you assist someone, but in some cases, it's better to offer so that one can refuse.

This is for...the Poet in Me and You - World Poetry Day on March 21

Poetry

Not poorly written
no specific etiquette needed
it's in me
and it's in you
it's easy and yet so complicated
it's the way I rhyme
sublime
in time
like sour limes
my words
are for everyone
to lift you up
or to break you down
your choice
it's all in the interpretation
it's your perception
it's my conception
when I write
I'm in a new dimension
no longer in suspension
but giving full attention
to the pen

March 21 Commemorates World Poetry Day: Celebrating Poets, Poetry and the Impact on the World

UNESCO founded World Poetry Day to emphasize the importance of poets and poetry to the world. Poetry serves as a source of inspiration for many people.

Poetry plays an important role in everyday life because it is one of the creative arts that the average person can take part in to express themselves. Poetry dates back to the Holy Bible and to ancient hymns and then to notable figures such as William Shakespeare and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and in latter days, poets such as Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda and Louise Bennet. In more recent times, Tupac Shakur and now Maya Angelou have enlightened various audiences and have performed poetry in movies. Of note, poet Elizabeth Alexander performed a poem at President Barack Obama's inauguration on January 20, 2009.

UNESCO's Commemoration of World Poetry Day
In November 1999, the United Nations Educational Scientific CulturalOrganization (UNESCO) proclaimed March 21 as World Poetry Day. UNESCO saw the importance of poetry to the world and as one of the major organizations that focuses on culture, World Poetry Day was officially commemorated to celebrate the work of poets. According to UNESCO, World Poetry Day "is meant to support poetry, return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, promote teaching poetry, restore a dialogue between poetry and the other arts such as theatre, dance, music, painting and so on, support small publishers and create an attractive image of poetry in the media so that the art of poetry will no longer be considered an outdated form of art but one".

An excerpt from the Message from Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO on the occasion of World Poetry Day 2010 reads "On this World Poetry Day 2010, let us recall that poetry is a universal country in which peoples may meet through words of all colors, rhythms and musicality". **World Poetry Day in the Caribbean** UNESCO is an organization that touches every region in the world including the Caribbean. While each member country may not recognize every UNESCO commemoration, some countries host ceremonies or other activities in recognition of days such as World Poetry Day. In Guyana, according to Stabroek News, World Poetry Day was celebrated with a poetry event at the Umana Yana on Tuesday March 23, 2010.

The event was hosted by the Guyana Department of Culture in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. In the British Virgin Islands, the Callaloo Poets hosted their second annual poetry competition in 2010 for the territory's school children themed "How Can I Be A Good Role Model" and also a poetry reading which featured local poets and the students who competed in the competition. Such activities - an official message, a poetry reading or a poetry competition are used to promote the reading and writing of poetry to the community.

A Poet's Voice
Katherine Irish is a poet hailing from the Caribbean and a member of the aforementioned Callaloo Poets. Katherine started writing early at age 14. She sees poetry as a way of expressing herself through writing rather than verbally and as an excellent way to share her thoughts and feelings with others. According to Katherine, poetry is "an escape from everyday life (and) a way to let her imagination work". When asked what World Poetry Day meant to her, she stated that it is a time where poetry, the artform and the artistes are recognized and have the opportunity to showcase their work. Katherine commented that poetry is a source of inspiration and a dynamic artform that can be incorporated with other artforms - dance, song and drama. She added that poetry should be taken seriously because just like writing a book and relating a story, a story can be told through a poem.

March 21 marks a significant date in the celebration of the cultural artform of poetry. Poets are the songwriters, greeting card writers and the new nursery rhyme writers. Poetry lets people express themselves and gives them the opportunity to inspire others positively. UNESCO's decision to celebrate World Poetry Day is an indication of the international level of support and recognition for this artform and its significant impacts on the world yesterday, today and also for the future.

Monday, March 21, 2011 is World Poetry Day!

Cultivation

my reach needs an extension
to make the connection in reaction
to the love in existence
and the brilliance of a million
smiles and reactions that produce
alive passion that fashions
inside and cultivates outside
lies trembling beside and stimulates
the fireside
on the bright side
a poem compiled
with the happy tears I
cried
a walk in the
countryside
a relaxing morning ride
fashions my inside
and cultivates my outside

How Do You Deal with Opportunity or Obstacles

Life can present challenges daily. However, it’s how we handle the challenges. Do we run from obstacles or do we face them head on? There will always be difficult decisions to be made and hard struggles to overcome. It’s your outlook on life and how quickly you can recover from a particular fall.

What I have noticed is that money really causes fall out between people. Most challenges, issues, bickering etc stem out of money problems. If your cousin is trying to sell all the family land without permission, he most likely needs money or is just greedy. Sometimes we need money because we want to keep up with other people who seem to be doing well. Remember, most people are not doing as well as they may seem to. It’s all a façade to give the impression that things are so great when they are not.

Why do we have to pretend to be doing better than we actually are? Is it fair for us to set our course in life by trying to impress others? I would not say that I wouldn’t want to be a role model for others, but I have to live according to what God gives me and by using the intellect that he has blessed me with. I like finding new opportunities that fit well within my niche.

For example, writing for Suite101 is an absolute pleasure for me. I can write on varied topics and about the things I love and enjoy. The income was not so much a factor for me but every little bit counts. I wanted to build a repertoire of writings and I am able to make some pocket change at the same time.

On the other hand, I face obstacles and problems in everyday life – with my family, on the job and sometimes by just walking down the street. In some cases, I write people off. When you are cut off from me, you are truly severed. I may not curse and fight but you’ll be shut off. The people I curse and fuss with are the ones is many cases the ones that I value. I know it’s odd but sometimes they are the ones I really need to listen to or the ones who may need to listen to me.

However you choose to live your life is your businesses but I will live mine the best way I can. I never want to be rich but I would like to be comfortable in having the basic amenities. I don’t need to go to the club or the movies to prove to you that I can hang if I know I can’t afford to put dinner on the table for the children.

It’s how you live, take opportunity and face challenges that makes your definition.

What Do My Words Count For?

What is my opinion really worth? I may feel that it is priceless while others think that it’s irrelevant. Some may not listen or if they do listen, they still may disregard the ideas.

I would not say that I am an authority on any subject. I do not have a PHD but I keep an open mind and open ear to new things. I relish in the politics of the BVI and USVI and I have an interest in agricultural development. I love my family even though I’ll be one of the parents who will honestly say that I love when my children retire for the night. I love writing articles and poetry and have opinions on tourism in the BVI. I also love music and have written several articles about R&B and reggae albums.

However, I am still not an expert nor can I say that I proficiently know these topics. I can continue to monitor, document and analyze changes in each genre. I can also read more and get involved in the activities that are relevant to my growth in the subject area.

Will that make me have an expert opinion on any topic? It may or may not. I actually don’t want to be an expert but instead a catalyst for positive change. As it says in Psalms 19:14, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”

I hope that my words are and continue to be a source of inspiration and information sharing.

POEM: Subtle

It started with a smile
a quiet blushed grin
a soft chuckle
and this opened the door
because he retorted with a wink
the eye glance that touched her heart
amazing that such subtle communication
can radiate such powerful energy
A "Hi" with no flick of the tongue
a "Hey Love" without mouth movement
just eye glances and mouth curling
that exchanged the message - the interest
there was no contemplation
or no hestitation
just love in actions
love without fractions
in subtle communication...

My Goals are ... mine

I would like to be a shining star in everything I do. I think everyone should have similar aspirations too. I believe I was born like this and I have continued the trend. What helps my self esteem? I am not sure.

So why would anyone aspire to be less? When we look at people just at a glance, we may feel that someone has low esteem and self worth. However, you do not know where their goals really lie. Some people do not aspire for greatness in their profession, but in their family life or in their community roles. Some people may aspire to be the sexiest person alive. Who are we to judge?

We would all want to think that everyone aspires to be perfect like many of us pretend to be. Many people just want to live and make it through the rough days. Of course, they may want the house on the hill but if all we can afford is the shack on the bottom - and it's safe enough - then we are living!

Everyone has to know their intimate thoughts. Get in tune with yourself and think about what you want in life. No one can dictate what you dream to be. A positive role model, a spouse, a good friend, a counsellor or a pastor may give you good advice but only you can chart your course to success.

Supermarket Shopping Tips: Buy the Best Fruits from the Store

Fruits are essential in everyone's diet. Choose the best ones from the market to enjoy the fruits and to save money while grocery shopping.

Fruits provide many nutrients that people need from their daily consumption of food. As fruits are perishable, it is important to select the best ones when grocery shopping at the market. A careful eye must be given to tropical fruits such as bananas, mangoes, papayas. Fruits that are overripe or blemished can be used in recipes or juices but it always better to select the best first to save money.

What to Look for When Buying Fruits at the Grocery Store
Look for the best quality fruits at the supermarket to save money. Any small amount of wastage can be considered lost money. Find fruits that look fresh, are free of bruises and appear disease free. Ignore fruits that look, feel or smell overripe. Oranges should be round and firm without sunken spots. Also, apples should not have soft spots. Grapes on a bunch should all look fresh and firm. Feel free to ask a clerk if the fruits are fresh and when the market will restock its produce aisles.

buying Bananas from the Grocery Store
People who live in the Caribbean today purchase bananas for cooking and for ripening. The green bananas are cooked and used a starch with steamed fish or salted fish. These green bananas should be fully green with no hint of ripening. Bananas sold as ripe bananas will be much more yellow and full in appearance. Look for ripe bananas that are free of blemishes and bruises but are not overripe or too
soft. A soft or bruised banana is still edible but if several pieces have to be cut of before eating, there will be money going to waste unless the fruit is used for juicing or in banana bread.

Enjoy Mangoes From the Market
Mangoes are a celebrated fruit as there are festivals held in several places such as the British Virgin Islands, India, Miami and Antigua that highlight the mango. While mangoes are so tasty, when purchasing look for small holes, dark spots and bruises. Bruises mean that the mango fell during harvesting and a bruise will cause a soft spot. Dark spots could mean an anthracnose infection in the fruit tree. A fruit with any small holes should be avoided because this could be the presence of worms or the Mango Seed Weevil Larvae. In some cases, mangoes will not show the presence of any pests until ripening so be sure to carefully select mangoes that are slightly softer or more closer to fully ripening.

Buy the Right Papayas from the Supermarket
Papayas are another tropical fruit that are very nutritious and tasty. Similar to the bananas, Caribbean people boil the green papayas and eat the ripe ones fresh or they juice the fruit. Green papayas should be green without any coloring on the skin. Papayas bought for ripening at the market should have orange coloring showing that the fruit will soon ripe. To advance ripening, place in a dark cupboard or in a paper bag for a couple days. Greer also notes that with a ripe papaya, the "flesh will give slightly when fruit (is) pressed in palm of hand". Papayas are also susceptible to the anthracnose infection, so be sure to inspect the skin closely for any dark or sunken spots.

When purchasing fruits from the supermarket, look for the best quality. Avoid any obvious flaws in the fruit to save money. Find bananas, papayas, mangoes or other fruits that are free of bruises and blemishes so that your family enjoys the fruits bought at the supermarket.

Pertinent. Relevant. Consistent. Decent. Persistent. Confident. Different. Prominent. Heaven-Sent.

Pertinent. Relevant. Consistent. Decent. Persistent. Confident. Different. Prominent. Heaven-Sent.
These words are so important to me. They all do rhyme, but that adds flavor.

Pertinent & Relevant - For me, these words mean that I have a say in what's going on. I am read, listened to, and my opinion matters at least to a few.

Consistent - Consistency should be my M.O. I should not be all over the place but playing the field with my head on. If I change some movement, it has to be to make a statement or take a stand.

Decent speaks for itself. Everybody wants to be decent and expects to be treated with decency.

Confident - This is something that people struggle with. We have to find ways to harness confidence so that we can face the public and overcome hurdles.

Different - I always dare to be different. I guess that's why I studied Marketing because I think people need to come up with new ideas to promote themselves and their business.

Prominent - As with relevant and prominent, I seek to have a voice that is listened to. I hope to evoke positive change. I don't need to be rich, I want to survive, but I want the country to survive too.

Heaven-Sent - We are all heaven-sent. We are all here for some reason. Even if you feel someone is a thief, murderer, or rapist, they are God's children who have just fallen away from the flock and need prayer and guidance. Plus it's the title of my favorite Keisha Cole song!

These are just some words that I thought of last night and shared on Facebook. As I looked at my status, I decided to blog about it. It's early in the morning so I thought - why not start the day on a good start!

A Woman in a Black Dress: What Does This Mean?

There are many occasions for a lady to wear a black dress, but the event dictates the style. Women wear black in mourning, at work and out in the evenings.

Fashion stylists always say that every woman needs a 'little black dress' in her closet. What does wearing a black dress mean and for what occasions do women wear black dresses? The black dress has become a staple in women's wardrobe and can used for funerals, the office and for evening functions. Black dresses can easily be accessorized and an addition of color can create a fresh look.

Black Dresses Can Signify Mourning
Black and other dark colors are accepted as colors for mourning. So women wear black, navy blue, grey or purple to funerals and memorial services. A typical black dress for a funeral will not be sleeveless or tube-topped, tight-fitting or short. It would be similar to any dress that can be worn to church with an appropriate length, minimal cleavage and well-fitting. However, for funerals, it is better to tone down on the sequins and embellishments. A lady can still have fun with accessories which should be black, white, gold, silver, tan or another mourning color such as purple or grey.

A Woman in a Black Dress Can Show Professionalism
A woman wearing a well-fitting black dress that is office appropriate is sure to make a good first impression in an interview. A black dress is also a good staple in the regular work wardrobe. Again, appropriate length and fit with 3/4 or long sleeves are key to keeping a black dress work appropriate. A sheath with short sleeves can be paired with a jacket for a complete work look. You can convert a skimpy black dress into office wear by adding a nice cardigan or blazer. Accessories can be a bit more playful as red shoes and jewelry go very well with a black dress giving the work look an added boost.

A Black Dress is a Great Look for Evening Functions
The black dress really comes alive for evening functions because that is where the dress can be worn to be more fun and exciting. For a dinner date, prom or a night of dancing, a black dress can be strapless, sequined, short or with low cleavage - all within each lady's taste. Accessories and bits of color can be added if needed so that even the black dress worn at work can be upgraded to an evening look. A black dress is a great piece for any lady to have in her wardrobe.

A woman in a black dress who wears her outfit elegantly with the right accessories will always be admired. As stylists proclaim to the world that every woman needs her little black dress, ladies should wear their dresses proudly whether it is to a funeral, to work or for a night out with family and friends.

Foundation Garments: Choose the Bra that Fits Best

Foundation garments are key to making any outfit look neat and polished. Women should choose a bra that gives the best fit and look under clothing.

Many women have experienced problems with selecting bras that give the right fit. Sometimes, it is the size and other times it may be the color or the style. Women need to keep several factors in mind when choosing bras including size, style, color and fabric for overall comfort.

Find the Right Bra Size
Ladies should be aware of their correct bra size. Although bra sizes are supposed to be based on a universal sizing chart, sizes may vary based on each bra brand. On a visit to a bra or underwear store, ladies can be measured around the bust and under the bust line to determine the correct bra size. After the correct size is verified, it is much easier to find the best fit.

Select the Bra Style that Suits Best
After finding the correct size, a woman then must choose the most appropriate style that fits her bust line. Today, ladies can opt for push-up, strapless, racer-back or sport bras. However, women must be mindful that they must select bras that fit comfortably and can work with their clothing. While small busted ladies can easily wear a push-up bra, larger chested women will be better dressed with a full comfort-strapped bra.

Choose the Bra Color
Every woman should have at least one of each of the following color bras - black, white and nude or tan. All the other colors of the rainbow and print bras are allowed but should be worn under clothing where the colors are not visible. Despite the seasonal fashion trends, it is better to leave underwear unseen under clothing, especially at work.

Bras Come in Different Fabrics
Today, bras are available in cotton, spandex, lace and combinations of these fabrics. There are padded fabrics and also sheer bras which vary according to the fabric. Most styles and colors of bras are available in cotton for women who prefer cotton.

Special Bras for Women - Mastectomy, Breastfeeding, Backless
Bras are being offered in more versatile styles and shapes to allow women to breastfeed or wear the most scanty dress while keeping the bust line shapely. Low-back, backless and post mastectomy bras are some of the special bras that can be purchased from lingerie boutiques.

Take Care of Bras
Women should also look carefully at durability and care of undergarments. Purchase a lingerie bag to wash bras especially those with underwire or lace. Taking care of bras helps them to retain the shape, color and thus helps them to last longer.

Bras are essential foundation garments that make an outfit more complete. This undergarment comes in many shapes, colors and styles, but it is important for each woman to find the style that gives her comfort and the best look.
