POEM: Taking Turns

Taking Turns

Only the Father can turn us around:
He heals our pain,
He forgives our sins,
and He gives us true joy within.

Our Father never turns us away;
instead, He leads us,
He keeps us safe,
and He makes our journeys easier.

He never turns us out:
our Father stays with us,
gives us love and strength,
and all we need to do is have faith.

Our Father turns a hard heart into soft matter:
Yes! Our Father builds bridges,
He solves our problems,
and all we have to do is to believe.

Turning us around - healing and forgiving,
Never turning us away - accepting us as we are,
Never turning us out - still loving and strengthening us...
Only our Father can do all these things and more.

2009 to 2010

It's that time of the year again - time to reflect on the past 360 plus days and plan for the upcoming 360 plus once God grants us the days.

Many people are caught up in spending trying to please everyone. This year, I am trying to suffice with the little that I have while enjoying simple things and planning for the future.

So to the ladies who must splurge, Google search my poem 'Where do you live?' for my opinion on that.

Seriously and positively, I do hope for a quiet end for 2009 and a productive start for 2010. In my progression of moving with like minds - people who are goal oriented, serious but yet have their fun, I think that I have a good friend circle - and this is important. My circle includes single parents, married parents, entrepeneurs, masterminds, limers, realists, real revolutionaries, poets, artistes, lovers etc etc.

From the planets to the bees or the ants - everything is about balance. 'Want all get NONE.' Do you see the ants taking more than they need? Do bees sting you just because? Did you really need that pair of Jordans when the Reeboks could do the job? Did you really need that Dodge truck when the Mazda burns less gas? Did you balance your check book? Do you give back to the community in anyway?

These are questions that I must ask myself as I try to be a responsible adult. It's not about the show or the fame, but it's more about living a healthy lifestyle and keeping life in balance.

I don't do News Years resolutions because January 1 should not be the waiting date for me to act right or do right. For example, I wanted to blast a lady who stole a parking space from me today but I keep my words inside my car. 'Do so don't like so.' That woman is not worth it. I think I handled it well (the man in the white truck might say differently lol lol).

Don't be stuck in the same trends
Let's live right to the end
by starting right in 2009 & 2010!

Who I slept with......

Legs were everywhere. Sometimes the feeling was hot and there were times it was cold. In between the constant movement and noises, I lay quietly wanting to forget about anything and everything.

So what happened?

My daughter had a restless night and slept like a mad bull...while snoring too, keeping me awake.

Take your mind out of the gutter!

Poetic thoughts - Word Sound

My word
My word
My word against yours
How does it add up?
Or does it divide?
Your word against mine
time, time, time
is passing
while we are laughing
at these cold blind words
some sharp like swords
and others soft
smooth
sexy
and some breathtaking
Your word
is ALL that you have
and is by what you stand
for our words
can arouse
make love
make babies
and yet make wars
so when the words we use
can be counted like stars
we can be near or far
but our words will keep us
close
words like
some, more and most
most of all
the word I use to describe you
is true
you are too real
with those words of yours
my word
your word
our words
my words with yours
make the one word
ours

What are your goals?

Where do your priorities lie? Do you even have priorities? It's good to set goals - realistic and also crazy ones. It does make sense to aim high because you may just get to a height that you never imagined. Are you keeping a positive head on while making your goals? I feel that I was destined to get the job that I have. I applied before and was turned down by all the 'big ones' but even after several years, I applied again with a more level head and more work experience while being quite persistent...and here I am today. Goals! I need to save more - just as anyone else in these trying times. So that means no or minimal 'splurges'. I refer to my poem 'Where do you live' so you can understand. I have to pay rent, daycare, loan, electricity, cable, telephone and of course eat while trying to save - just like any other man. So I 'cut my eye' at certain things and cut down on the cheesecake and put that $2 in my savings can. Goals! I look at the organizations that I am affliated with - it's a few people with like minds who make these things work. We make sacrifices and work really hard with events that provide quality entertainment in the BVI. We try to link with community organizations to promote good values to the youth and the overall BVI. Goals! I am not the best at anything but I try to use my talents as God directs me so that the goals that I do achieve are inspiring to someone else. One Love ribbon

The Goats of Farmville

Don't ever feel that I have forgotten my blog. Sometimes Farmville on Facebook takes all my energy. Can't Facebook see that we need to hire workers to help? The farms are ridiculously large and we have all those buildings, so why not workers? It is very draining. :)

Anyway, there's so much going on here in the BVI. The elected representatives are trying to add two more friends. The BVI population is about 32,000 (mind you we have about 27,000 vehicles). We already have 13 representatives - 9 in districts and 4 at-large. The USVI has 15 representatives along with the Governor and Lt. Governor for about 300,000 people. Did I miss something somewhere?

What is up with this Government? These days, I am really LMAO.

Even though I am laughing, I am still very worrried because vision seems to have been lost somewhere along the line. When you speak up, people feel that you just like to complain, but if they listen, they may see that you bring a suggested comprimise that will solve the problem.

It's like on some jobs where employees are afraid to talk to their supervisors because they are so demotivated. I still feel the employee has to take charge of that situation and move it forward.

My motto is be a GOAT - not a sheep. I will only be a sheep for Jesus - not for man. On earth, I'll be the goat that climbs and fights my way through once I am fighting for the greater good.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa to the haters, downpressors, dividers, abusers and users out there.

In the footsteps of the great Noel Lloyd, POSITIVE ACTION!

Stressed.....when?

I'm into my music right now just vibing because it is all so mellow. At 10pm - this is the only time I have for ME - noone to disturb, yell, argue with or curse. It's like 'nar bother me nuh man'.

I can sing off-key and feel like I sound the greatest - there are no fights to part or noone to put on the toilet because they are all asleep. Even the TV is just there entertaining itself because at the same time - it's Farmville time.

Everyone needs this personal time or they will turn 'postal'. Trust me - we don't want that. The last person who went 'postal' hung himself while in prison. He was a wonderful person but he had his limits just like the rest of us. Road rage, domestic violence and depression stem from STRESS that builds up and the outlet is clogged.

Employers seem to love to stress their employees because all they care about is WORK WORK WORK. What about your employees - are they physically, mentally and emotionally able to perform today? Slavery has ended but yet the 'Massas' still want to kill us out. They put us in poor working conditions, pay us little and want the world of work to be completed before day's end - of course you work over time but you won't get paid for it!

And yet, noone believes that people are stressed!

All I can say is THANK GOD for poetry and music - my outlets. I do get a little road rage every now and then but I prefer to honk my horn than slam into your car. Keep lite music in your car and it may help to improve your well-being. I am a HUGE Bob Marley but songs like Catch A Fire or Get Up Stand Up do tend to get me riled up! Stick with some Kaya or Natural Mystic and some Etana, Berris, John Legend etc to keep you mellow.

The Bible - talents and sheep

There are so many talented people in our islands. We are talented with our hands, voices and overall artistic insight. Noel Lloyd was one of the creative people who was stifled. Let it had been someone from the US or UK trying to share the knowledge - we would have jumped speedily to his bidding.

So it is here in our islands - we are the sheep of a careless shepherd - yes, the one who will not go for the 15th much less the 99th. My workplace may be surrounded by sheep, goats and cows but I refuse to be a sheep. I refuse to go mindlessly for slaughter. I like April Glasgow's choice of word - evolutionary. That is truly deep.

You may look at us and try to class us as Rastas or a cult. Really though, we revolutionary and evolutionary - our common goal is to move forward with UNITY for a stronger COMMUNITY - to take care of the resources and plan for the future so our grandchildren can learn from our example. It is no longer acceptable to just drag along accepting the mistakes of the past while letting them guide our future.

Talented people - the parable in the bible about the talents I think referred to actual talents. So please do not bury your talents. Use them to go forward to help yourself and your people. Be the sheep that cries for change and makes it happen.

POEM: Undefined Love

Undefined love

Literally, Figuratively and Physically
I stop and stare
mentally enwrapped in your presence
I don't know if you see me or sense me
but I am willing to take a chance
because even in your absence
I am still caught..
still lost...
wishing that
you are here with me
not with them
not with her
but here - with me
to laugh with me
to sing with me
with me that's the common theme
you and me
as a literal couple
as a figurative pair of love birds
as two lovers enwrapped physically in the moment of loving
serious and good loving
so let's take a chance
I'll step to you so you'll step with me
arm in arm
no metaphor to increase the score
just love in sync, intense and in step

Hair, Fear and other things

Some people like to see differences, and others prefer uniformity. I love to see people happy within their own skin. I love being black and petite, and I love my hair in its non-chemically processed state. Surprisingly, there are still black people in the Caribbean who feel straightened hair looks bette,r and it should be the choice of black women. What say you?

I say it's hair - it's just hair! The natural look may not suit every woman, and I will not tell any sister what she should do with her mane. The key thing with hair is care and cleansing. Nobody wants to smell funky hair, so it's important to wash your hair regularly and oil it as needed. To my people with dreadlocks - "Natty Dread, Rise Again." The oppression and discrimination against persons with locks have been crossed off the books, but seems to still be etched in the brains of certain folk.

Black, white, yellow, or pink - be yourself. We do not need to conform to the ideals of the slave masters that we have to pass to make the cut. Plus I am too dark to pass and it never crossed my mind because I have too much to do. I have a family to raise, a job to do, and a community to uplift, encourage, and inspire.

I threw away the Stuck In a Rut ideal because, as a 'Real Revolutionary', I prefer to 'kill' you with kindness to steer you my way than to argue. When I say Real Revolutionary, I don't mean that I am starting a riot. I am about positive change...even if it's a subtle change - a gradual positive movement. I am not a realist - I don't know what Real People are. We are just PEOPLE - all colors, shapes, and sizes.

Stop discriminating, hating, and belly-aching for stupidness, and be a Real Revolutionary and make positive change in our community and the world.

Poem: Hate vs Love

poem

as the chime of a clock..goes tick and tock
so my mind chimes..with thoughts sublime
and as I rhyme in time with lines
designed to awaken your senses so you drop your defences
without flavor I ask for one favor -
that you show love not hate
for hate... needs to depreciate
for love is a valued treasure - hate only brings displeasure
love is the answer - hate is a cancer
hate is a cancer - love is the answer

POEM: Love....

hand drawn loveI watch you from afar
with my mind and my heart smiling
as I think about you
I feel light-hearted and light-headed
just knowing that
the sight, thought and smell of you brings me joy
so as I express these words to you
would you be interested in loving me too?

(c) Linette Rabsatt

I wrote that for someone to use as a love poem. I hope they like and also the person who they are trying to woo. Love, o sweet love...ain't it great. LOL LOL 😃💜💚💓

Stupid Day

I call today Stupid Day and pray to the father above that we all will exercise our common sense to make wise decisions that build up ourselves, our families and our communities. It is not acceptable to act stupid or silly when you know better. It is not right to willingly act stupid for others to see. Do you like to be the butt of other's jokes or are you a hoax?

To the stupid women who hate another sister just because La Stupid's friend hates the sister - wise up and start acting like you have a brain. I mean how can you maintian hate - are you so baited and constipated that you can't think for yorself? What I have done to you that you now despise me and you wish for my demise.

Sisters and brothers, please start to use what God gave us and that does not mean only your abs, butt or breasts - the total you - the conscience, the brain, the mind.

Wake up and I dare you not to let there be another Stupid Day again!!!

POEM: Man, listen to your woman; Woman, listen to your man

Man, listen to your woman.
Woman, listen to your man.
If you do not listen to each other,
how can you build your future plans?

I fight you and you curse me.
You call Susie then I call Henry.
What a calamity? What a song?
All that will do is spread HIV along.

Man, listen to your woman.
Woman, listen to your man.
If you do not listen to each other,
how can you build your future plans?

On small issues, we can't agree;
For big issues, it's a fight to the next degree.
It's only my way not yours at all,
now our love is like car that's stalled.

Man, listen to your woman.
Woman, listen to your man.
If you do not listen to each other,
how can you build your future plans?

The children don't which way to go,
cause the parents love can never show.
With no guidance, what will happen to them?
Because love connects the roots to the stem.

Man, listen to your woman.
Woman, listen to your man.
If you do not listen to each other,
how can you build your future plans?

In church we put on a sweet, sweet face,
but at home, -it's a cursing race.
A big act putting on for the passersby -
this relationship is built on hoax and lies.

Man, listen to your woman.
Woman, listen to your man.
If you do not listen to each other,
how can you build your future plans?

I want to spend all the cash
on shoes and pretty things that flash.
He betting his own at the horse race.
No structure, no rules to keep all in place.

Man, listen to your woman.
Woman, listen to your man.
If you do not listen to each other,
how can you build your future plans?

So today the moral of the story
is to stop worrying about glitz and glory.
Partners who listen to each other wholly
in the future will tell some good old stories.

Stop letting the inlaws and friends take over.
Stop wasting time. Spend time with your lover.
Be faithful and playful is the recipe to read over
to build that love like a strong and sturdy tower.

Man, listen to your woman.
Woman, listen to your man.
If you do not listen to each other,
how can you build your future plans?

It's time to DO

How can you sit in an office, in a church or just in life in general and say that you have nothing to do? What is your talent or your niche? I keep telling everyone that I take the parable about the talents literally nor figuratively. I feel that those servants did not sing, cook, plant, speak or dance in the name of the Lord and their actual talents were taken from them. Many of us sit in dead end jobs, but does that mean life must be a dead end? How can you use your gifts outside of your 9-5 to better yourself?

I am a poet, writer, mother, coordinator and event assistant - all outside of my regular job. Why do I do this - to better myself and to strengthen my resume. In recent days, I have been calling myself the 'real revolutionary.' I don't call myself a realist because everyone is a realist living in their reality and dealing with their business. I am a real revolutionary because I grab opportunities and run with them. I make links and find ways to progress. I find other people to link so that together, we can rise and make an impact in what we do. If I say that I won't do something because I feel things are not handled right - then I am not doing it.

While we make links, we must still be mindful of who we consort with. There are a lot of evil forces out there and I am not hating on anyone. However, I prefer to link with persons who are thinking about the betterment of the community - not the fattening of their pockets off the public's back. Why am I telling you this? I am telling you this because it's time to wake-up and move forward. Are you stuck in a rut (pardon the cliché)? Come on, it's time to wake up, get up and DO. Stop the idle talking and DO. Watch me and learn from my example, and I will do the same with you and others who are making strides to improve themselves. It's time to DO.

Poem: Differences

I did not know that there was still a fight
between those who are dark and those who are light...skinned
yet a man turned me down for a job
cause although my mind is bright - my skin's not light!

When since are we pitting thick versus thin
in that kind of fight - who can really win
discriminating against the voluptuous ladies
is nothing but a regular sized sin

Who said that young is better than old
only the old teaches us to be confident and bold
so the next time you are rude to one of your elders
imagine your time when you get old

imbalance or unbalanced; whatever you call it
to love one and hate the other causes conflict
we need to respect and love each other
and to the commandments - recommit

Obsessed with Writing?

I'm here just listening to some Michael Jackson and feeling inspired. I love a creative mind - it's beautiful, inspiring, raw and frivilous. I can only hope to become a writer that is half-way as good as he was.

People always seem to forget that without poetry and writing, instruments would just play and people would just hum or go 'la, la, la .....' all day. There would be no 'named' and 'themed' dances because there would be no song lyrics to direct it.

Peopl may say I am obsessed with writing but I have come a long way. I went from not liking English class in senior school to writing for CORE, DISH and Brown Eyez Magazine. It's all about taking risks and finding opportunities - that's what Terry Donovan, Hariette Cole, Michael Jackson and so many others have done. So why not you?

I have decided that no matter where I am in life, I should be able to politely express my views and give suggestions on anything. Of course now, noone likes a Know-It-All, but the only way we can move forward is if someone is willing to speak out when he or she NEEDS TO!

If you are in doubt, pray for guidance. The Father will guide you on the right part.

Remember the time...

Peace, Love, Hope & Soul to all!

I will always love Michael Jackson's music and everytime I hear 'Remember the Time,' I will reminisce on the engaging and innovative artist, his songs and music videos.

I can only aspire to be as creative and original as Michael Jackson. A lot of people are focusing on negative things - but that's not how we as a people are supposed to move forward.

Cut the hate and LEARN from other's life and experiences. If we do not learn, then how can we progress?

Our theme for BVI Festival 2009 is REMEMBER THE TIME - BVI FESTIVAL 2009. It could not be more fitting. There's a lot going on in the world today - bad and good. Creativity is on the upsurge as many poets and musicians are getting international acclaim.

On the other hand, economic recession and depression are trying to rain and reign upon us. We need to pray and keep focused on Living the 'God in Me' as said by recording artists Mary Mary.

POEM: Realizing Love

Realizing Love

What is the love we share?
It's not rare, but it's real
no thesis statement
can describe
this feeling.
It's not WHY I love you
because having a reason
can never determine
or quantify this LOVE.
It can't be HOW I love you
because no matter
the situation
thick, thin, hot, cold
weak, strong, short or long
I LOVE you.
It won't be WHEN I love you
because a date or time stamp
is insignificant
as a higher power
has taken over
our lives with LOVE.
Who is the love
that I speak about?
My LOVE is
simple, comfortable,
indescribably beautiful,
inspiring, solid and bountiful.
My love for life, charity and mankind.

What's up with people today not wanted to be committed in relationships? Many of us want to be free but still want to get the 'freebies' - sex, food and comfort. Why would I want to leave my man to go and love up another who really just wants to get off? Good question!

What about these men who want to get all the goods but regard relationships as complicated? You like me, you like the food, you like the relations - so what is the problem? There are women who behave like that too. This is always a recipe for disaster because someone always gets attached and can't let go.

Ribbon does not want a 'side thing' because I get attached. I prefer to watch and wonder than put myself up for disease and heartbreak. He broke your heart and gave you HIV - O HELL NO!

Adults, yes we are but we really do act like little children. It's a simple recipe - Be Faithful and Playful and your relationship can last.

Tired of bad service

Tired of bad service

In this month, I have experienced poor customer and negative attitudes at local business that have made me feel that my money is not good enough to be spent with them.

The first instance was at local children’s store. On Saturday, I bought a pair of shoes for my daughter. By the following Saturday, the strap burst. I carried back the shoes to show the store clerk and bought another pair of shoes. I asked the clerk for a discount and she took of $2.00 off the price. The second pair opened at the mouth by the following Friday evening. I spoke to owner of the store who informed me that I was the only person to ever complain about her shoes. It made me wonder if she was insinuating that I tore the shoes apart. Would I spend $40.00 during a recession and then destroy what I purchased? Was she trying to tell me that my daughter’s feet are bad?

The second instance was with the dealer for my car. I serviced the car in February. My car never had oil leaks before the service but it is leaking oil now and making a click when I reverse. When I mentioned this to the dealer, he curtly informed me that ‘old cars leak oil’. I guess it’s ‘my bad’ not having a new car!

The last instance that I am sharing is in relation to a contractor who was to prepare an estimate for building my home. I ask him to divide the estimate into stages– foundation, cistern and first floor and then the second floor. To break down a document that has already been calculated into two stages is too difficult? Is it because I asked for the breakdown that they may have felt I could not afford to build?

These ‘local’ businesses are not up to standard! They don’t give you the service or product you PAY FOR – and still they have curt remarks to make me feel that my money is not wanted. I am tired and have a new game plan to deal with them.

To the lady with the ‘dry-rottened’ shoes – I won’t be shopping at your store anymore. I can order from Amazon.com too you know.

To the car dealer – you’ll still get SOME of money but you know – you’ll get yours in time.

To the contractor – keep up with the rich people – hope they can pay you.

So much going on

I have been really bad to my blog these days. It's so much going on, so much to do. Yet, I still keep the faith and presevere. I hope that mission is set in God's plan as I feel inspiration can only come from God.

Many of us are hurting right now - financially, emotionally and mentally, but we have to stay strong during these times. Some people let the happenings and situations distress them but keep the faith and keep your head on.

Look at your talents and make use of them. There is a way for us all to survive but we have to stop looking for the handouts and seek the honest way. AND No - you can't be an honest thief. You have to work hard and make do with what you have, which is something that we don't always do.

I treasure what little I have and I hope to remain as happy as I am today. I don't need a big house or a fancy SUV to make me happy. Richness won't take you to heaven. Pastors need to stop preaching Wealth Religion. Was Jesus rich? Was he not humble and accepting of others. People, please - stop trying to rape the poor people and let's work together to educate and lift them up!

Liming Straight

March is a busy month in the BVI:

Holidays
Hon. HL Stoutt's Birthday - First Monday
Commonwealth Day - Second Monday

Commemorations
Hon. HL Stoutt's Birthday - First Monday
Commonwealth Day - Second Monday
Education Week - Second Week
International Women's Day - March 8 but celebrated on March 15
Trellis Bay Arts & Crafts Festival - March 8-13(or 14)
International Poetry Day - March 21
Poetry Reading - Third Saturday

Of course I am sure that I did not capture every event or commeration. There are also beach jams, reggae concerts, award concerts and church conventions.

BVI is not boring in March at all. You just have to find your niche or your crowd and lime.

I think other than the art and poetry, I'll be in BedRock cause I can't keep up with all of these events. It's a bit much especially when you have kids.

You who are single or are without kids - enjoy the limes!

POEM: My Love's locked down by Ribbon

Kanye knows what's he talking about because he's got me locked to his lyrics. He's one of my favorite rappers along with Common, Outkast, Jay-Z and of course Tupac. Kanye's inspired me to write my version of how my love could be locked down. LOL

My Love's locked down by Ribbon

My love's locked down
caught up in complications
as cliche as it sounds
my mind's off relaxation
my feet planted on the ground
can't stop my vexation
no - I'm not a clown
but I was living to his dedication
so as I sit in my lounge
and as songs proclaim his adoration
I'm stumped and can't come around
by this astonishing revelation
my next move to just sit around
cause I'm down
my love's locked down
to the beat of your sound
it's true - I just can't come around

words expressed in thoughts on love

quick words
new words
in wild thoughts
expressed from my heart
out of my lips
into your ears
my love
do you still know me
do you want to love me
we can do this
we can mkae this happen
we are one big heart
one big love
it's sweet loving you
it's sweet knowing you
how could I not prefer only
to have you around
is it real
is it so
that we can't be apart
a love for real
a love for true
yes love
all in one lifetime

I am suffering from a little writer's block. I don't know if you can have a little or a lot of writer's block, but I have some. Thoughts are in my head but I can't get them composed.

I am more feeling the music these days - maybe it's time for a lime - not the LIME like the LIME minus the 'M' which equals LIE.

My writer's block may more be for the poetry - not the blogging. There's always something to write in my blog! I have been writing about music a lot these days so maybe I need to funnel that energy and inspiration into my poetry. My thoughts are to write something about a 'Derelict Man' or 'Vigilant Minds follow Vigilante Justice'. The topics came to me and that's how my thought process works.

I think a lot of other people follow that same process and let the thoughts just flow for an edit after. Other people are more methodical and edit while composing. Hey- to each his own! I know what works for me.

Much Love

"I'm thinking of a master plan..."

Lloyd's "Girls All Around The World" is one of my favorite songs from 2008. It's sexy - Lloyd and Lil Wayne are looking good in the video too. I think that may be one of my favorite videos of 2008 too.

"I'm thinking of a master plan,
Nah. I'm not - shawty on my mind"

I love it!

Of course the main man, Pressure Buss Pipe out of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands (Rock City), is still a top favorite too - I will always love "Love & Affection". If you have never heard it, you need to find it. Trust me, you will be downloading it ASAP.

In the VI, Squad Up, of whom the majority of the members are my cousins - are coming on strong. "We from the Virgin Islands" is a big tune and can take them far.

I am a poet and I think I am because I love music - rhythms, beats, sounds of instruments together.... I am not a lyrist but a free style poet.

Anyway, have a good day.

Artists Against Addiction

I am an Artist Against Addiction. I really don't know if I can toot myown horn to call myself an 'ARTIST' but I performed along with Ouida, Metango, Maccabee, Foggy Mountain Boys, Capable, Accapella Fellas, Adoration & Praise and other Callaloo Poets and I think that we all did an awesome job addressing the issues of drug and alcohol addiction.

My only question is 'Where was the rest of the audience?' A free concert on a Saunday afternoon should have attracted much more people from the community. There were even giveaways - pens, bags, flashlight-radios and other stuff. Of course, i don't mean that you should attend events to get free stuff. However, we need to support the community more.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse, HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Cancer - these are REAL here in the BVI. So where were you?

My links between poetry and music

I am excited about the prospects for 2009 for poets and musicians. As World Poetry Day approaches in the next months, I plan to write a feature piece on writing as I notice people have many misconceptions about poets, poems and poetry.

I once believed that poetry was OK. Now, as a poet, I feel joy when I can share my work with others. Some people hate Hip Hop/Rap. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion. However, you can never judge an artform, a person or any tangible or non-tangible thing unless you have met, tried or experienced it.

I love music - lyrics, beats ... everything. The foundation of a song is the lyrics - all the other stuff are aesthetic. Today, the young minds have been trained to hear the beat first and disregard the lyrics. The US artists seem to be waking up because the people with the earning power who buy albums have stoppped. Who wants garbage in their car. I give Lil Wayne a lot of credit because when he first came out, I never like his style. He has improved and is very deserving of the awards he has received.

My favorites for now remain Ludacris, Outkast, Common and Kanye West for their consistently unique styles. Much love to these artists and others such as Lupe Fiasco and Soulja Boy who have broken the barriers of age, color and sex with their fresh styles.

My local artists have come along way to - the Hip Hop groups. Reggae artists are consistent and ours have so remained. Don't confuse the reggae with the dancehall. Church Boyz, Squad Up, HIgher Level and Oreggae Boys are all doing well lyrically and with their original beats - most times. I am getting tired of these re-makes of US artist songs - try drums, try acapella - something..........

My reggae artists - especially Capable, Shine-I, Jalon, Metango and Maccabee - acapella anything - these guys are always ready to go and the lyrics are REAL, original and touching to the spirit.

As a poet, my composition may be similar to the above musicians but they are composing to then find the appropriate beat to go along. I just flow and let go in word sound.

Rescue?

My MSN Messenger sign-in name today is 'Do you think that 2009 will be a poor year for wedding planners, florists and greeting card writers?' Let us seriously think about this - relationships are pretty crappy these days. We as human are behaving deplorably these days.

Whether you want to follow the Ten Commandments or what has been penned the Seven Deadliest Sins - it's all the same. We no longer live for the love of our Creator. We no longer treat our earth like it sustains our existence. Today, we have been caught up in the 'financial crisis' - the financial breakdown of the world's financing markets and financial stability.

Do you notice the repetition of the word 'financial'. I think money is killing us - our relationships, our family structures are we as a people. We are hungry, tired, over-sexed, under-sexed and miserable. Where is your brother's keeper? Am I being my brother's keeper?

I have to talk about myself too because I can be mean too. I have to try to be more of a better person - give more, love more and deal with people better. It's so simple - the solution is that we start with WE. It's the ME and the WE that need to be rejuventated and rescued.

Start with you today - set the example. Be good to each other.

LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS

Where is the LOVE these days? What has happened to people that they seem so sour in relationships? Is the economic downturn causing a rise in divorces? LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS, BE FAITHFUL, ACCEPT YOUR LOVER and YOU WILL BE FINE.

I find people so sour these days. Even the basic courtesies which should be given on a regular basis - Good Morning, Excuse Me - have gone. I am not sorry to say this - If you partner is getting on your nerves - work it out or leave.

The rest of the world does not need to be victim to your relationship woes. Be kind to people - be real with people. Stop hating and stop watching what people have. If you are watching people, learn from their example and stop criticizing them.

Deal with your business and keep it off the streets.

The Irony of Life

I have been in the BVI for few years now after finishing my undergraduate degree. Living here can be nice and can have a lot of high points. There are days that I wish I was back in Ithaca in the cold.

Because we are in a warm climate does not mean that we are warm and friendly souls all the time. BVI is becoming a little New York City - rich, crowded and full of snobbish people. Am I the pot that is calling the kettle black - NO. I live and deal with everyone with an open mind.

We have been overcome with the influx of cruise ships, law firms and cruise ships and agriculture and our 'culture' has become almost non-existent. What ever happened to us?

30,000 vehicles for 30,000 persons
Minimum Wage - $4.00 and Lawyers bill $400.00 per hour (miinimum)
Trade Licence (base fee) - $500.00 and Incorporation of a Company (base fee) - $350.00
Big Hospital in the making - not enough doctors
Sewerage system - FAILED LONG TIME!

When will our leaders get it together and stop focusing on petty nonsense and starting looking closer at the youths and future...

To be continued

What's good for me

Parents throughout the ages have and will continue to try to control their children's career choices. My children can choose to be whatever they want with my minimal input.

For me - my father wanted me to be a lawyer and my grandfather (mother's side) said that 'lawyers are liars'. It was my choice. Now I work in a law firm - by need, not choice.

I have never needed much. A good TV, a good crossword puzzle and good food - lil chocolate every now and then keep me happy. I have my boyfriend and my kids and my good friends and we keep it together and have fun together. I just love the simple life. I don't want to rack up billable hours on the back on the young, old or the stressed. I prefer to write my poetry, plant in a garden and dance with my kids. The love that song 'Put your backside in'. lol

Just my thoughts!
