POEM: Don't Know How to Act

I sometimes think I don't know how to act
or I think that I'm not smart
but may I'm just the norm
nothing special - just weathering the storm
like every one else
but we all think we are the best
but nevertheless
I am blessed
and sometimes I don't behave
because I was not destined to be a slave
I just have to echo and expound
make my mouth loud and rebound
every stupid comment
or the ill intent
and I should probably leave it to the Father
but somehow I'd rather
issue a response
and state my stance
but I think I'll start to cool out
and leave the evil move out
because I prefer to act right
and exude a positive light
but don't underestimate me
I am like that tree
planted by the river
with fruit that is not bitter
so don't push me to misbehave
because I don't want to be hatred's slave
Don't Know How to Act

The Old and New Names

My name is simple. Some may even call it old. My son has an old name as well. He is the only child in his school with that name. My daughter has a variation of an old time name but she is one of few with that name.

We are all unique in our own way and our name is what is used to recognize us. I do love my name and as with most things, I'm not bothered if you don't. The names we hear today are no longer Jane, Mary, Susan, Thomas, Jackson or Dave. We are in the time of the 'ique', 'isha', 'uante' or 'rema'. As I dropped my children today off today, I heard a camp counsellor say that she can't keep up with the names of today.

There are some children that I simply do not remember their names and when they remind me, I dare not try to spell. I workon a yearbook and I still think some of the names are not written correctly. It's funny because my name is simple and people still mess it up - much less these new names with these apostrophes.

If I planned to have more children, I would still keep the names simple.

POEM: If or And

Poem

I don't know about 'if'
but I do know about 'sure'
and if you're sure
then you can move forward
if you're on an 'if' movement
then you won't persevere
I say "let's go"
cause there's a lot to do
and we are the ones to do it
but if we say 'if'
or 'but'
then the effort stops
it's gotta be
'and' and not for excuses
but for change
for movement
and improvement
so I am sure
that we can do better
I am sure
that we can love stronger
I am sure
we can make change

Sun & Rain and Common VI Visitors

It's another day in the paradise we call the British Virgin Islands. It started off looking one of those rainy days and there was even thunder and lightening. However it is breezy and clear right now. I guess it's one of the nice things about living in the Caribbean. Sometimes, it is raining while the sun is shining. Also, like today, the sky was cloudy and a light gust blew the clouds away.

Of course, there are those things that can be a little annoying like stray cows. They can do a lot of damage and since I don't eat meat, I won't ask the owner for a piece when he slaughters. But, maybe I can ask him for some money to replace all the plants the cows ate? I'll consider that.

A nice sight is the local fowls which crow in the morning. They do eat fruits that are within their reach. If you're lucky, you might be able to find some eggs but I have not yet. Every now and then there's a garden snake, scorpion or tarantula which I loathe. I don't mind the lizards but I hate the wood slaves or geckos. They make clicking sounds and just looking nasty.

There's also the sugar ants that seem to multiply when there's rainy weather or lack of rain. They find even the tiniest particle and can track sugar down even in the freezer. They taste sweet too! LOL They have invaded my sandwich before and the cheese became very sweet.

What bird am I?

A woman called me a 'Thrushie' but I don't thief. I am not a peacock cause I don't focus on being proud. I'm not a dove cause I am everything but quiet. I'm somewhat eagle cause I want to soar. I'm part chicken cause I will peck your eyes out even you come near my young. I'm part parrot but I can speak for myself. I could be chickenhawk but that's not me.

I have a little of all but the 'thrushie' thing did tickle me. However, I realize that if I stay stuck worrying about foolishness, then I can't move forward. I'll have to let out the eagle in me and soar higher. However, if you mash my corn, I may have to become that chicken who will peck back. If I have to be a thrushie, let me be one to steal your anger but instead I'll leave you with love.

Poetic Prayer #2

Dear God,

These days are trying
and many around us are dying
for senseless reasons
and as we pass the seasons
we continue to sin
and think that we are about to win
but the only champion
is the one heading to Zion
safe in the Father's arm
where no one can harm
raise alarm
because Jesus' love brings calm
it help us not to get caught up
but instead to wise up
and focus on God's way
and continuously pray
and not let the devil sway
our hearts his way
we got a work to do
and as we trod through
the rough times and the pain
let Jesus' love reign
because he did on the cross for all
and he picks us up when we fall
our God, the one who takes us through
refreshes us and gives us live anew!
