Caribbean Styled Food: Easy Pink Beans and Rice Recipe

Pinks beans are tasty and go well with rice. For a quick and easy way to prepare pink beans, try this easy Pink Beans and Rice recipe.

This easy Pink Beans and Rice recipe offers a novice cook a nice alternative to plain white rice or pasta. Pink beans have a small amount of protein, dietary fiber, iron and calcium. People in the Caribbean love peas and rice and every island has its own way of preparing the recipe. Jamaicans add coconut milk and use either kidney beans or pigeon peas for the legume. Today, this dish as prepared in the BVI is likely to have kidney beans in it. This easy Pink Beans and Rice Recipe uses pink beans instead of the usual pigeon peas or kidney beans. Canned beans are used for easy and quick cooking. If dried beans are to be used, they will have to be soaked to avoid excessive boiling.

Ingredients:
  • 1 10.5 ounce can of Goya Pink Beans
  • 4 cups of water
  • 2 sprigs of thyme
  • 1 sprig of chive
  • 1 clove of garlic (minced)
  • 1 dash of dried oregano
  • 1/2 of a small sweet pepper (sliced or diced)
  • 3 slices of a whole onion (whole or diced)
  • 1 teaspoon salt / seasoning salt
  • 3 cups of rice
  • 1/2 tablespoon of butter (can be substituted with olive oil)
Directions:
  1. Rinse the rice and dice the garlic, onions and sweet pepper, (if desired to be minced), and set aside.
  2. Open the can of pink beans and add to an uncovered medium-sized saucepan or pot with salt and water. Boil with medium heat until peas are broken or easy to rend apart with a spoon.
  3. When the peas are broken, add all the other ingredients to the pot and stir so that the peas, seasonings and rice are mixed well. Turn the stove to low heat.
  4. Cook covered until all the water has evaporated. If the rice needs to be cooked more, add some boiling water and one teaspoon of butter and cover tightly until cooked.
This Easy Pink Beans and Rice Recipe should take less than one-half hour to prepare. It is an excellent side dish that can be served with meat, fish, veggie burger or tofu. This recipe is tasty and works well for a single person who packs lunch or for busy parents who need to make a quick and nutritious side dish.

Job Satisfaction - A Myth

Have you ever worked in an organization where the climate is always stormy? Ask yourself these questions about your job.

1. Do you feel you are well liked or respected or both?
2. Are you the one who never says "NO"?
3. Are you motivated - in general?
4. Are there opportunities for training?
5. Are there avenues for promotion?
6. Do you feel challenged?
7. Are you stressed?
8. Are you bombarded with work?
9. Are you bored?
10. Do you get along with your boss?

There's no magic formula that if you answer 'yes to ten questions, then...", you will be rewarded or deflated. We just have to evaluate our situation and decide to move on. Unless you are in the tightest contract ever made, you can always go on study leave, get a transfer if possible or leave.

I am tired of seeing nepotism and other underhanded behavior. I hate seeing people lazing and procrastinating. I can't stand when an organization is held back because people are resistant to change.

Another side of it is when the people who are rude, judgemnental, crooked etc. Who really wants to work with a bukky? Notice people's behavior and be mindful of their critism.

POEM: Obstacles by Linette

Weary and teary eyes
from weeping and no sleeping
up all day yet wide all night
in such a fit
that it's such a sight
with daylight soon approaching
what obstacle will come next
will the reaction be fumingly vexed
upset - say something to regret
why is love an object
rather than a concept
is it so complex
that we regress
just thinking about love
it's another obstacle, isn't it?
just like people are
so crafty, so tardy
and so full of complacency
what a mix!
did you think
that I wasn't planning ahead too
do you know I can see through you
timing is slight
but I will not fight
I will express
I will address
I will speak wisely but not to regret
because it's not my fire to burn
some obstacles make an upturn
or a u-turn
whatever the deal
time will heal
cause life is too hip and too real
to be wasting time
eating sour limes
all day
regrouping is what to do
for the Father will see me through

People suck - don't they sometimes?

I am having a bad day. I am pissed with the world. Thank God for some Tarrus Riley, Niyorah, Richie Spice, Abijah and other reggae artists to keep me calm.

If it was not for the music, I think the wrong person may have mashed my corn today and ohhhhhhhh it would not have been pleasant.

Lord, help me because they are pushing my buttons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are not supposed to let situations change us but so help me - I am becoming a grump. Of course, I'm still cracking jokes, singing and chatting with my friends but I really want to scrabble the offenders who keep pushing my buttons.

Everybody wants to be sensitive but yet they don't care about others. Everybody knows every thing but yet they really know NOTHING. Everybody has the best ideas yet they can't execute a thing.

As the young people say in conversations "LOL LOL." I guess I should try to be the bigger person, but I'm really not - I'm only 5 feet tall so I don't mind being petite (pun intended).

I am controversial and I tend to let ones know when I am not pleased about things because they like to pick at me. Unfortunately sometimes, I like to pick back with a smile.

Someone sang "better must come one day." I'm still waiting on that day but I hope tomorrow meets me in a better mood.

POEM: Miss Independent by Linette Rabsatt

Pyramid Schemes - A Matrix of Financial Ruin

Pyramid Schemes are not a way to improve your finances. Instead, these plans defraud many people of their money because the returns can never be realized.

In these harsh economic times, persons seeking a quick and high return on their money can be easily swayed to invest. Many people worldwide have lost money in pyramid schemes because of the promise of huge payouts on the initial investments. In recent days, investors in the Virgin Islands have suffered losses in a pyramid scheme. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that persons remain cognizant of fraudulent schemes when investing.

What is a Pyramid Scheme
A pyramid scheme entices investors by offering a huge and quick return on the initial investment with money earned from recruiting more persons to invest. Each new investor is also promised the same high returns once he brings more persons on-board.

A Live Pyramid Scheme Example
John joins an investment plan where he invests $100 and once he can find four persons to join, he will get $20 for each one that joins. So John can make $80 if he recruits four friends while there is actually $400 being paid in by his four recruits. When each of the four persons, John's second level, invites four more persons, John gets $10 for each of the new investors, now John's third level, and he reaps $160. At John's third level, $1,600 would have been paid in by these new investors.

At John's fourth level, there will be 64 people investing with $6,400 paid in and John will make $320 if his cut is $5 per investor. At a sixth level, the investors increase to 1,024 and at John's seventh level, the numbers soar to 16,384. When the number of investors under John is totaled, it is 21,844 persons and they would have invested $218,440 ($100 from each person) through John's pyramid if there were enough new recruits. This cycle continues because every new investor to the scheme becomes a 'John' starting his own pyramid inviting new recruits.

Why Pyramid Schemes Fail
In the example above, the chances of John being able to increase to the seventh level are slim and an
eighth level would require 87,376 new persons. Problems with recruitment may begin at John's third level because difficulties may have already begun with gathering the 256 investors and as the pyramid grows, it gets worse. According to the Security and Exchanges Commission, "at some point the schemes get too big, the promoter cannot raise enough money from new investors to pay earlier investors, and many people lose their money". After a lower level investor makes his payment and can not find new recruits because of over-saturation, lack of interest or negative feedback, the scheme begins to collapse.

In the Prepared Statement of Debra A. Valentine, General Counsel for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on "Pyramid Schemes", she considered this latest recruit's perspective as they would have started their pyramid of investors but with being unable to gather recruits, would be unable to recoup their investment.

Virgin Islanders are Defrauded
Janice Dorette Rey, an Anguillan who resided in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) at some point and also the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), was arrested in Dade County, Florida on charges of Obtaining Money by False Pretense, Drawing and Delivering Worthless Checks, Securities Fraud, and Being an Unregistered Broker-Dealer. Rey, according to the USVI Department of Justice and the St. Thomas Source online news, defrauded investors in the USVI and in the BVI of over three million dollars with her pyramid scheme "Global Cohesive Economics (GCE)". She promised high returns on the investments and in the end was unable to maintain the promises and was eventually caught by authorities.

Errol George of the BVI Financial Investigation Agency Speaks
Rey's scheme caused the Financial Investigation Agency of the British Virgin Islands (FIA) to remind the territory of the danger of investing without researching first. FIA's Director, Errol George issued a press release about Rey's fraud advising people to be more vigilant because such fraudulent schemes are marketed well and lack of understanding and ease of trust make for easy targets.

The Director, when interviewed, suggested that persons interested in investing should be extremely careful before entering any investment and they should research, investigate and ask questions if there are any doubts. He noted that it is very prudent to seek advice from the general business community and the financial regulatory body in the country, such as the Financial Services Commission (FSC) in the BVI. George also suggested that persons should go with their gut feelings especially if the aura is negative. Everyone wants to make large sums of money in the fastest and easiest way. This makes it easy for thieves to come up with ways to defraud investors who are not investment or business savvy.

Pyramid and Ponzi schemes sound good to the listener but really do cause monetary losses and potential financial ruin depending on the level of investment since there is no way for the scheme to maintain the promised returns. Investors are reminded that they need to think carefully and choose wisely about the type of investment they want to pursue to avoid such schemes. Research, consultation and investigation are key to avoiding financial ruin from pyramid schemes.

POEM: A New Definition

Check out my poem: A New Definition with Kanye West's "Touch The Sky" instrumental. "Touch The Sky" was inspired by Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up":

Teeth, Ears and Immunizations: Things Parents Should Know

Parents have to stay abreast of their children's growth and ensure that children's teeth and ears are checked and immunizations are up to date.

Parents of infants and toddlers in most countries are constantly reminded that they should maintain their children's health by monitoring the youth's growth and development. Parents need to observe growth milestones and ensure that the children's immunizations are up to date. Before a child is ready to attend elementary or primary school, there are certain tests that should be completed before he starts classes. School-aged children should have already had their first dentist visit. A hearing test is also important to assess if the child has any ear issues.  While some countries require that these tests and vaccinations are completed, parents should also take the initiative to ensure that their children are in good health.

If Parents Choose to, Children Should be Fully Immunized to Enter School
If parents choose to immunize their children, they should be aware of the schedule set out by their country for the vaccinations. Parents who wish not to immunize their children for religious or other reasons should visit their doctor and provide the necessary information to their child's school with the application for admission. When it comes to immunizations, the vaccine for Hepatitis B given in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is given in three doses and if parents miss the second shot, this affects the child's immunization record by delaying the date for the third dose. By age four, any child entering the school system in the British Virgin Islands would have received the vaccine for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Polio, Diphtheria and Tetanus and Pertussis (DTP or DTaP). Haemophilus influenzae type b (HiB) vaccine which prevents meningitis and Varicella for chickenpox and BCG are also administered within the first four years of life.

Five Year Old Children Should Be Regularly Visiting the Dentist
Countries and individual dentists may vary with their recommendation for when a child should first visit the dentist. Upon the recommendation of the local dentist in the BVI, my children had their first visit at age three and were comfortable. Since that first visit, they look forward to visiting the dentist and are comfortable with the procedures. By age five, most children start to lose their teeth and if the teeth are coming in crooked, it is good to already have the child comfortable with the dentist for those extra consultations. Going to the dentist is overall a good habit to get children accustomed to even if your child's school or public clinic does not require it. Healthy teeth are important for our smiles, our consumption of food and overall well-being.

Hearing Test
After birth, babies are usually given a hearing test. However, when a child becomes eligible to enter primary or elementary school, a follow-up hearing test is also important to ensure that your child can hear well. In the BVI, at age three, all children are required to have to have a hearing test at no cost to the parents. Not being able to hear well also affects the way the child learns and speaks. Education and health professionals are basically using the concept of "prevention is better than the cure" when it comes to hearing. Any hearing disability that is detected early can be corrected with further assessment which may range from simply clearing the ear of wax to getting the child equipped with a hearing aid. As stated earlier, requirements for children entering school vary from country to country.

Parents should monitor their children and ensure that their teeth are checked by a dentist at least every six months. Hearing should also be re-checked before entrance to primary or elementary school. Vision screening can be checked during a general physical and if the general practitioner sees the need for further screening, he will recommend the child to an eye specialist. Today, parents are able to work with dentists, audiologists and general practitioners to ensure that their four and five year olds are ready to learn when entering school.

Classic Reggae Music from 1979: Trod On by Culture

The reggae group Culture was very influential in reggae music. Their Trod On album was originally released in 1979 with songs like "Black Rose."

Reggae music has had several extremely talented artists who really took the genre to an international level. We always hear about Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

The reggae group, Culture, was also very popular and influential with their style of performing. They released songs like "Blood in a Babylon," "Weeping Eyes" and "No Sin" on their fourth album, Trod On. Culture's members originally were Joseph Hill, now deceased, Kenneth Paley and Albert Walker.

Reggae Group Culture Gave Us Good Reggae Music*
The reggae group Culture released several albums including Two Sevens Clash, Cumbolo, One Stone, International Herb Culture and Harder Than The Rest." Stoute also shared in his article that Culture was inducted "into the Jamaican Reggae Walk of Fame" and was given a "2005 Independence Award presented by the Prime Minister of Jamaica."

Reggae's Culture Worked with Jamaica's First Female Music Producer
Culture released Trod On in 1979. According to the notes to the Trod On album, "this album is Culture's fourth album for producer Sonia Pottinger."

The Reggae Album Trod On
Trod On has twelve songs including two under the title "Grounation" featuring Count Ossie and the Mystic Revelation of Rastari. While Trod On was originally released in 1979, it was re-released in 1993 on compact disc. Joseph Hill wrote all of the songs and the music was engineered by Errol Brown.
  • Title Track "Trod On": "Trod On" has a catchy instrumental and inspiring words. Lyrics include "this is the time when I and I should be free" and "majority of them don't want to see dread survive / but no matter what they do, dread must stay alive." Culture encourages people of all races to "trod on" and keep moving forward to victory and to prosperity. "Trod On" also makes several biblical references to Samson, Jacob, Joseph (in the pit), Daniel and David.
  • "Blood In A Babylon": "If Babylon kill one more Rastaman / the sun will stop from shining / the grass will stop from growing" start the first verse of this piercing song. The chorus repeats the words "Blood, blood, blood in a Babylon" and "Fire, Fire, Fire in a Babylon" is added as a second chorus. The artist is expressing his pain for the youth and elders in the community who were being persecuted at that time.
  • "Fussing And Fighting (Take Two)": Joseph Hill was basically making an appeal to his people to find unity in this song. The hook contains the simple, yet powerful words "Stop this fussing and fighting, brother." The 'Take Two' is only to reiterate that it does take two persons to make an argument. "It's a shame to see the people fighting in the streets / drawing guns at each other" are lyrics from the first verse.
  • "No Sin" with Count Ossie & Mystic Revelation of Rasta: "No Sin" is one of the songs listed under the title "Grounation," which the album booklet describes as a "gathering of Rastafarians who come together to 'reason,' mingle ideas through discussion, chanting and beating drums." "No Sin" has rhythmic drum beats which remind the listener of Bob Marley's "Rastaman Chant" and is the longest track on the album with over seven minutes of chants. One of the popular bible verses, "Let the words from I mouth and the meditation of I heart might able be acceptable in thy sight" from Psalm 19:14 is sung. "No sin, no sin at all... cannot enter Zion" is repeated throughout "No Sin."
  • "Ticklish Ghetto": "Ticklish Ghetto" has a classic ska rhythm. "Sometimes it's hard, hard, hard, so very so hard, my friend, to get a job / when you work and get pay and walk go a street, I say / them there a want to shoot you down" describes the singer's thoughts about the perils in the "Ticklish Ghetto." While people may work hard, there is always someone who wants to take what they earn. In the chorus, Culture admonishes "Work hard, natty, work hard, yea, till Jah Jah come."
Culture is a well-loved reggae group who has performed all over the world. Their 1979 Trod On album gives listeners inspirational words, grooving reggae rhythms and a glimpse into life in Jamaica. Culture's Joseph Hill passed away in 2006 but Culture continues to perform with the other founding members, Kenneth Paley and Albert Walker, along with Hill's son, Kenyatta.

A Sitcom Fanatic - That's me

I am proud to say that I do love TV! I love a good detective/courtroom drama like Law & Order. I love the original, SVU and Criminal Intent. By the way, I still love Matlock.

Sitcoms have fallen by the wayside as more networks seem to want to feature reality shows. I've been a viewer of I Love New York, Flavor Flav, Bret Michaels, Chance & Real and I love America's Top Model.

I naturally love to laugh and that's where my sitcoms come in. From Hanging With Mr. Cooper, Cosby Show, Saved By The Bell, Frasier, Friends - I grew up watching these. The Jeffersons, Sanford & Son, Good Times all can give me a good laugh today.

I think I was devasted when they cancelled Girlfriends. The show ws entertaining an relatable. I am looking forward to seeing the new episodes of The Game and the new Let's Stay Together. On January 11, I will be sleeping late to see these new shows.

I just love me some sitcoms!!!!!!

Let's Stay Together: Who are the Actors on This Sitcom

Let's Stay Together is a new sitcom that BET is launching in 2011. Read more to learn about the cast and the characters on this program.

Let's Stay Together promises to be a fun comedy sitcom airing on BET (http://www.bet.com) for 2011. The clips advertising Let's Stay Together show that there will be witty banter between the characters and a lot of drama. This sitcom has a cast of actors who are no strangers to film and television. The clips show that there is a rapport between them that will bring good entertainment.

"Jamal" is Played by RonReaco Lee
RonReaco Lee plays "Jamal." We know Lee from the sitcoms Sister Sister and Girlfriends, and movies such as Guess Who (2005) and Tyler Perry's Madea Goes To Jail (2009). Based on what BET.com shares, Jamal is a legal aid attorney in his twenties who is married to the character "Tasha." In the  dvertisements, Jamal talks a lot about romance and even states that women want "good food, candlelight ...you have to soothe her into submission." Jamal is the father of twins with a wife who demands what she wants. In one of the commercials, Jamal tells Tasha that he does her hair which shows how dedicated he is to his wife.

Let's Stay Together's Housewife, "Tasha"
The spicy Tasha, Jamal's wife, is played by Joyful Drake. BET promises that this character will offer a lot of 'drama' to the show. In one clip from the show, Tasha is seen asking her Dad for money. BET.com shares that she is a housewife but one with flair and style. One of the advertisements has her complaining about Jamal preparing a picnic for her in the park. Tasha has no qualms in saying that she made him take her to 'a real restaurant.' Joyful Drake has acted in several movies including Phat Girlz (2006) with Mo'Nique and Beauty Shop (2005) with Queen Latifah.

Nadine Ellis is on Let's Stay Together
"Stacy Lawrence" is Tasha's sister and the fiance of "Charles Whitemore". Stacy is played by Nadine Ellis who has had roles in Hairspray (2007) and Idlewild (2006) with Big Boi and Dre also called Andre 3000 from the hip hop duo Outkast. Originally Malinda Williams was slated for  this character, according to Erica Hubbard's news page and to Gina DiNunno's April 7, 2010 article on TV Guide, BET Orders Comedy Pilot. Stacy is older than Charles and apparently makes more money than he does. BET.com shares that Stacy is a "conservative, independent woman."

BET Brings Us Bert Belasco as "Charles Whitemore"
"Charles Whitemore" is a strong character who works as a contractor. His love is Stacy but his views on love are funny. Charles seems to think that women want a man that is in control when it comes to sex. This character also admits that he has a comic book collection in one of the ads for the show. Charles is played by Bert Belasco who has appeared on
House.

Erica Hubbard and Her Character's 'Mancation'
The woman who claims that she is on a 'mancation' is Charles' sister, "Kita Whitemore." Erica Hubbard (http://www.ericahubbard.com/), from Save the Last Dance (2001) and Light It Up (1999), plays Kita and brings a different type of drama than Tasha does. Kita does not seem to hate men but she seems to want to take a break from serious relationships for a while. One of the clips from the Let's Stay Together shows Kita talking to a character played by America's Next Top Model supermodel and actress, Eva Pigford. They meet at an event and Kita is talking about a man that she dated that was married.

Let's Stay Together seems to bring romance and comedy for viewers looking for a new fun sitcom to watch. Airing on January 11 on BET, the promotions for Let's Stay Together have everyone in high gear to be entertained by this group of young, experienced and talented actors.

BET is offering new shows for 2011 including Let's Stay Together and The LaurieAnn Gibson Project and is also bringing back the favorites like 106 and Park.

We all remember BET in the days of Video Soul, Comic View, Teen Summit and Rap City. More recently, BET has continued to diversify and improve its programming by adding new shows and personalities. Reality shows, diverse music programs like 106 and Park and Bobby Jones Gospel that showcase hip hop, R&B and gospel music, syndicated sitcoms and talk shows are all a part of BET's lineup today.

BET's Reality Shows
BET's reality series have included College Hill, The Michael Vick Project, Monica: Still Standing, Baldwin Hills, Tiny & Toya and First In. Toya from Tina and Toya, the wife of Lil' Wayne, is expected to also have her own series in 2011, according to BET.com. A new reality series is also slated for 2011 with LaurieAnn Gibson, who according to BET.com, was a part of MTV's Making the Band. BET shares that Gibson is a choreographer and that the show will feature a competition among dancers. The LaurieAnn Gibson Project is set to air in the summer of 2011

Gospel Programming on BET
Gospel programs on BET have included Bobby Jones Gospel, Sunday Best and Celebration of Gospel. Bobby Jones Gospel is a definite staple in BET's programming. BET.com states that this program is the "longest continuously running original series on cable television" and will be returning in 2011. Other BET upstart shows include Sunday Best, the gospel version of American Idol hosted by Kirk Franklin with the duo Mary Mary and Bebe Winans as the judges. The Celebration of Gospel has been running for over ten years and has the energetic host, comedian, Steve Harvey.

Talk Shows on BET
Actress and comedian Mo'Nique  is one of the headliners on BET, but not in a new sitcom or movie. Mo'Nique hosts her own talk show, The Mo'Nique Show, which is exclusive to BET. In the past seasons, her show has featured the cast from The Game, Nelly, Musiq Soulchild and many other entertainers. BET is also airing episodes of The Wendy Williams Show. Williams' show also airs on other television stations and she interviews celebrities like Kelsey Grammer and Fantasia, chitchats about the daily happenings and shares information about fashion.

BET is Bringing Us Sitcoms

We are our own miracles - we can help each other solve problems

Sometimes we look for miracles when there are bad things happening to us. However, every day, we have the miracle of life and love. No matter what the issue may be, there is some resolution. We often look at things negatively if it does not go our way.

If I am diagnosed with deadly disease, I will be devastated. However, I either have to accept it or let it kill me faster. Sometimes working on a positive outlook and prayer can help us balance ourselves.

Why do we always want to win? Or is it that what we perceive as winning in a situation really isn't? When my car broke down, I felt down. However, I am catching the bus, riding with friends or paying a taxi. This new experience actually helps me to save money becaue I stay out of the grocery store every other day.

I have resigned from a position without a new job. I was confident that I would be able to find employment. The job that I landed was not the ideal post for my background but the salary sold it for me. I learned well and have since transitioned to another organization.

I stay focused but I go through the ups and downs like everyone else. I don't always share my problems and actually I rarely do. I have friends who share and I try to give them a listening ear because sometimes that's all we need. I have a special friend who believes in solutions. I admire her for that because she is about making good things happen and sharing with others.

Everyone has their special things about them. We can all help each other stay focused and grounded. Pick me up when I am falling! Encourage me when I am slouching! Let's help each other set SMART goals! YEA US!!!!

The miracle in life is very simple. We have all the answers. Prayer, family and grounding oneself.

New Episodes of The Game to Air on BET in January 2011

BET is bringing back the sitcom, The Game, in 2011 with new episodes and the original cast including Tia Mowry, Pooch Hall and Coby Bell.

On September 28, 2006, the CW Network premiered a new sitcom, The Game, which was created by Mara Brock Akil. The Game tells a story about the life of fictional football players of the "San Diego Sabers" and their relationships. The Game was cancelled by CW in 2009 and BET is planning to launch new episodes in starting January 2011.

The Cast of the Sitcom, The Game
The Game has an all-star cast of young actors who seem to carry their roles with passion. "Derwin Davis," the young rookie football player, is played by Pooch Hall. Derwin's girlfriend is "Melanie
Barnett," the young medical school student, played by Tia Mowry Hardrict. Tia is known for her role on the sitcom Sister, Sister with her twin sister Tamera Mowry.

The star quarterback of the show is "Malik Wright," a role that Hosea Chanchez ably carries. Malik's mother and manager is the spunky and vivacious "Tasha Mack" played by Wendy Raquel Robinson. We know Wendy from her roles on the Steve Harvey Show, Miss Congeniality (2000) and Two Can Play That Game (2001) which she acted with Morris Chestnut and Vivica Fox.

Coby Bell plays the cheapskate "San Diego Sabers" football team captain, "Jason Pitts." Brittany Daniel from White Chicks (2004) plays Jason's wife, "Kelly Pitts." Other notable actors who have appeared on The Game include Rick Fox (http://rickfox.com/), as himself dating Tasha, Robin Givens as herself, married to Malik for a short time, and Stacey Dash as "Camille," an eventual girlfriend of Jason. Musicians who have appeared on The Game include gospel's Donnie McClurkin, R&B's Musiq Soulchild, hip hop's Lil' Kim, Too Short and Soulja Boy, and rap's Rob Base.

The Game is a TV Show that Brought Comedy and Drama
The Game presented three seasons of amazing drama and comedy. The characters went through many life changes - from heartbreak to new nuptials. Derwin and Melanie broke up several times and eventually got married on the final episode. Derwin's child with "Janay," played by Gabrielle Dennis, was also born on the final episode. Melanie went through several love interests during the airing of The Game, most notably with the character, "Jerome" who is played by Mehcad Brooks.

Jerome eventually had relations with "Dionne" played by Shanti Lowry. "Dionne" was a stiff character who was once Derwin's publicist and Melanie's friend and roommate. Tasha's drama stems from her control over Malik, life and her short relationship stints. Tasha's most notable relationship is with Rick Fox and on the finale, the two are seen comforting each other. Jason and Kelly, who seemed to be the more stable relationship at the beginning of the show, eventually grew apart. The Pitts divorced and started seeing other people. By the end of the last season, Kelly realized that she still loved Jason but he was already involved with Camille.

Tasha had introduced Jason and Camille and when Kelly found out on the day of Melanie and Derwin's wedding, she attacked Tasha. By the last episode of The Game, Malik, who had earlier divorced Robin Givens, tried to help his half-sister, "Pucci" played by Lisa Tucker with her musical career. Malik's drama was much more subdued compared to the climaxes for the other characters.

What will BET bring with the New Episodes of The Game?
BET's commercials introducing the new season of The Game promises the same comedy and drama
and many surprises. The one constant seems to be the characters. Viewers will have to tune in to see how Melanie and Derwin are surviving as Mr. & Mrs. Derwin Davis and the effect of the new baby on their lives. We will also have to wait to see if Tasha and Rick Fox stay together. What antics will Malik be up to next and will Kelly and Jason ever get back together? Everyone will be on the edge of their seats on January 11, 2011 to see what the fourth season of The Game has to bring. BET's clips advertising the show share that Derwin's baby is now a two-year old living with him and Melanie.

Tasha seems to have a new love interest and teases about not being a 'cougar' but a 'mountain lion.' Kelly seems to be enjoying being divorced and is spending Jason's millions. The Game was a sitcom that ran for three seasons on the CW Network. The characters were all attached to the fictional "San Diego Sabers" NFL football team and shared drama and comedy with the viewers. The previous shows previewed infidelity, the effects of 'coming out' about homosexuality, parenting through Kelly and Jason, and Tasha, steroid abuse by Jason and true love between Derwin and Melanie. BET's new season is set to air on January 11, 2011 and it is hoped that the episodes will bring the same enjoyment as the three previous seasons.

R&B of the 1990s: After 7's Reflections Album

The R&B group After 7 released its last album as a performing group in 1995 titled Reflections. R&B fans fell in love with songs like "Til You Do Me Right."

The R&B Group After 7 came on the music scene in 1989. The group members were Keith Mitchell and brothers, Kevon and Melvin Edmonds. The Edmonds are brothers to Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds who brought us songs like "When Can I See You Again" and "Whip Appeal." After 7 released three albums as a performing and recording group, After 7, Takin My Time and Reflections. Compilations of their music have been released after the group split up.

Music in 1989 When After 7 Released Their Debut Album
When After 7 released their first single in 1989, Cher was singing "If I could Turn Back Time," Fine Young Cannibals were grooving with "She's Drives Me Crazy" and Soul II Soul brought us "Back To Life." More upbeat songs like "Pump Up The Jam" by Technotronic and "My Perrogative" by Bobby Brown were released in 1989. After 7's music was much more soulful and reminiscent of the earlier groups like the Temptations, The O'Jays and the Isley Brothers.

After 7's Albums
After 7's debut album was the self-titled After 7 in 1989. R&B fans enjoyed "Heat of the Moment" and "Ready or Not," which will always be considered as a top R&B song. Takin My Time was released in 1992 with songs like "Can He Love You Like This" and "Baby I'm for Real (Natural High)." The last album, Reflections, was released in 1995. These three albums were all released by Virgin Records.

The Songs on After 7's Reflections
Reflections has twelve songs and all sing tribute to love. The songs were produced and written by Babyface along with Jon B. and The Boom Brothers. Keith Andes for Ande Pandee Entertainment also produced and co-wrote four of the songs on this album.
  • 'Til You Do Me Right": This song was written by the Edmond brothers, Babyface, Kevon and Melvin. The title literally shares what the song is about. The second part of the chorus is "'til you do me right / only wrong is gonna come to you / nothing good is gonna come 'til you change…."
  • "How Do You Tell The One": "How Do You Tell The One" was written by Babyface and is a song about breaking up. "Cause I care for you more than you know / although my heart says go" and "If I'm deserting you, I don't mean to make you cry" are examples of the lyrics.
  • "Sprung On It": The Boom Brothers wrote "Sprung On It" which is the typical 90's song about infatuation or being "sprung." "Sprung On It" begins "Now I never thought that I'd be losing sleep at night / over you…." The song continues "Thoughts of you / keep driving me crazy / and if I don't sleep/ then it won't even faze me."
  • "Save It Up": "Save It Up" is one of the more upbeat songs on Reflections and is reminiscent of the earlier R&B song "Heat of the Moment." Jon B. penned this song and also sang in the background vocals. Lyrics from this song include "take your time / let's make sure the feeling's right" and the chorus includes "Save it up baby love / don't hold back your lovin'."
After 7 Post Reflections
K-Ci & JoJo and along with Babyface and After 7's Kenny Edmonds and Melvin Edmonds joined together in 1997 for the sound track of movie Soul Food (1997). They, as a group called Milestone, sang "I Care 'Bout You" but the group did not release any other songs. Kevon Edmonds was featured on the soundtrack of the movie Save The Last Dance (2001) with the song, "Move It Slow." Kevon Edmonds has continued to sing and released the album Who Knew in 2009. After 7 was one of the R&B groups of the 1990s that had that classic R&B flow with soothing love songs.

After 7 released three albums while still recording and performing. Unfortunately, the group did not release any more albums after Reflections in 1995. However, Reflections will always remain one of the classic R&B albums of the 1990s with songs like "How Do You Tell The One" and "I Like It Like That."

Daily Resolutions - not for New Year alone

It's getting closer to resolution time! What's my resolution for 2011? I just want to continue being me. I make resolution sometimes daily, weekly or monthly. Some days, I just jump at new things.

I have goals but a New Year's resolution won't help me to get there. I know that I need to save more and I have already started cutting costs. i know I need to write more and I am writing more - thus the blog! I know I need to learn to say 'no'. Trust me - I am getting better at that. 'No' 'NO' 'no no'

I'd like to encourage everyone to do the best they can every day. If you must set a resolution, don't get discouraged if you fall back. Keep moving forward and try to improve your behavior. If you want to make more friends for 2011, you can't still be rude or shy or sarcastic. If you want to get closer to God, you can't keep smoking weed or heading to the club.

Set SMART goals and try to work with them. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely is SMART.

POEM: A New Insight

I am the one who says
that I will not give in
that I was born to win
and I admit that I have sinned
against God and others
lied to a sister or a brother
yes imperfect and simple me
i need to stop playing myself hopelessly
and instead speak righteously
use my vision as bright torch
and keep searching for the lost
the overwhelmed and deceived
because the only way I can learn from my bad deeds
is to reach out and spread love
but it takes not me but US
to get life moving right
keeping the positive insight
living to the glory of God's delight

Let's Get the Writing Started Right! I had to work on mine for years

Many people express that they have problems with writing formally and informally. It is evident in the poorly written business correspondence, the ureadable emails and text messages and the poorly written homework assignments.

If you want to be a good writer, you need to read more and write more. That's why teachers encouraged us to keep diaries and journals so that we can write more often. Now we have the blog concept which is the same thing except we are typing instead of hand-writing. It does not matter once ideas are logged somewhere. Try to proofread your own work to minimize errors and if available, ask someone to assist.

I had to work hard on my writing skills over the years. I was okay in school and passed English with a B and received a General II grade for English and Literature. I think that I could form individual sentences correctly but struggled to write essays and short stories.

I head to the then BVI Community College (now HLSCC) and passed the Effective Business Writing Class but still was not confident with my English skills. I still felt that I was 'up-to-par' and could express myself. It was when I accepted to UVI that I realized that I need helped. I passed the entrance exam for both Math and English but failed the essay portion.

This was quite a blow to me and I ended up having to take a Skills class. In that class, the other students would say 'Why are you in this class?' because I seemed to get everything right. It was then that I realized that I really need to work hard to improve my writing skills - not just the barebones grammar but the finesse and expression. I needed to understand how to put the well-written sentences together to create an interesting, concise yet detailed work.

I kept at it and was able to progress in my English and other classes. In the journey, I was encouraged to write poetry and today I have over 200 poems. I think that I have been blessed to find professors and other students who showed interest in my growth and who encouraged me to pursue things that I did not believe I could attain.

It is heart-warming for me to share today that I have expanded my writing resume to publishing every once in a while locally and I have written for CORE Magazine, Brown Eyez Magazine, DISH magazine and now Suite101.com. I love the challenge in it and I love sharing information that I think is useful to others.

My blog, Words of Ribbon, was left alone for a while but I must return more regularly to share some thoughts or some poetry. After all, my greatest philosophy is that parable about the servants in the bible. I honestly feel that it was their LITERAL talents that they were hiding and the master took them away when they did not use the talents.

Therefore, don't bury your talents. Use them for the good of mankind.

Gossip Kills - Especially When a Male Gossips

Gossip kills. It's worse when you are blamed for saying things that you did not. It seems these days that men are getting more heavily involved in spreading rumors. Come on, guys! Don't you have some work to do?

I have accepted that men are wearing softer colors like pink now - awesome, looking great. I let it go with the two earrings. I love the braids - except when he's fighting me for the hairdresser's chair. I encourage men to go for massages, pedicures etc.

I draw the line at men gossipping - women too! We can chit-chat and talk about the happenings yes and how we can improve things. But when you are going to say that I said something I did not - NO NO NO.

A woman loves a man who she can talk freely with but men who gossip and make up lies to get in between other people's friendships are like the crud in the kitchen sink after cleaning the dirtiest dishes. I am not saying that it's ok for women to behave like that. I just think lower of the man who does.

What's Going On with Us These Days

There is a lot of wrong in the world today. People are the main cause of the wrongs. The animals known their roles and they live for that -whether they hunt or are the hunted.

We humans however prefer to cheat, steal and lie to get our own way and to gain power. It is a fact - "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely." Biggy and Puffy also sang it well "more money, more problems."

So why the inane drive to gather it all? Unfortunately this is the cliche - it's human nature. Everybody can't be perfect and we should not try to be. We all need to focus on trying to be right with God, ourselves, our family and friends.

We know there is wrong everywhere. So what we can do individually. Do the best that you can and hopefully your good works will influence others to do the right thing too. It is always hoped that good works will be infectious. Some people look at good works like it's a negative thing but I think that those people are the ones who just need to re-evaluate themselves. Instead of watching and criticizing - we need to set better examples for our youth to help them to excel rather than rebel.

No matter what - wrong and crime will be there. There is no perfect world for us on earth. We just have to really pull ourselves together - accept defeat when it comes and celebrate the wins that we gain.

Let Your Light Shine - stop waiting and LIVE

I can no longer leave my blog untouched. There is too much to write about. From hair to politics, I have so many thoughts that I need to share.

Today is about getting the 'GET UP AND GO.' There are so many times that we find reasons to deny ourselves or to refrain from taking action or speaking up and out. If you read this blog, don't wait until you reach 25 or until January 1 to be proactive. Do what you have to do today.

I will not say that I am perfect but I take risks that are worth my while. People think that I am crazy because I put my car down after the transmission broke. It was a hard decision but I have to look out for my best interest. People would also say that I was stepping out on a limb to sign up to write for an online publication. I love writing for Suite 101 because writing more only advances my talents and resume.

While I live on a small island, it does not mean that I can't extend my talents internationally. How can I become a better writer or poet if my work is not shared. Too many people are afraid to experiment with opportunity. There will be challenges especially those that after intellectual property. However, as the hymn 'This Little Light of Mine" says "hide it under a bushel - NO, I'm gonna let it shine."

You have to find ways to inspire yourself. Sitting an waiting for your parents, boss or spouse to push you forward will get you NO WHERE. You have to find that inner drive and propel yourself forward. It's not every venture that will give you the best results. On the other hand, just taking that step into the unknown is a good learning experience.

THINK. BE INSPIRED. SHARE. LIVE

Blog, oh Blog - I have not Forsaken You

I know I have not written in my blog for while. I am now writing for Suite 101 and I love it because it keeps me busy. My blog in recent posts has more become the poetry generator. I will admit that several more poems have been written since the last post here on Blogger.

Poetry seems easier for me to write. I play with words and it comes. I guess it's second nature now - maybe more first. It's like my singing - I do not sing as much as I used to and I think my voice has deteriorated but the more I write - the easier it is to share my poems.

These are my thoughts tonight (while listening to some Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Marvia Providence):

spirit
alive
passion
be free
smile
unhinged
in one look
it's me
feeling
so special
being
a new me
surrounded
by nature
this love
how it captures
with joy
it enlivens
with peace
it strengthens
YES
it's indirect
and YES
it protects
never rejects
shows respect
and in fact
I know know
that this
is the
only
love
that
I need
because
it comes
from
heaven

Music Makes Me Tick

Sweet reggae has an effect on me that I just can not explain. It makes me mellow and then I start to sing in a high falsetto and smile. Ras Attitude, Niyorah and Pressure are US Virgin Islands reggae artists who have a knack for really making me smile. I think it's just the positive lyrics that always promote a healthy image of a woman and also of the family unit.

Of course my British Virgin Islands brothers like Shine-I, Maccabee, Capable, Imo and Ritical bring the hard-hitting positive vibe as well.

I love most kinds of popular music - soca, reggae, dancehall, R&B and hip-hop. If you get me in the right mood, I may listen to some pop and enjoy it.

Music is really my favorite hobby and pasttime after writing poetry of course. I can only dream about composing lyrics because I am just straight up poetess. I leave the song lyrics to the lyricists.

the beat
and the vibe
touch me
embrace me
making me convulge
in a manner
not expected
even when
driving
I can't keep still
It's the music
the music
the music
YEAH YEAH
RAH RAH
I just
love the music

POEM: Cloud Love

Above
my fears
above my dreams
stands strength
hope and love
and this is only so
because your love
rings strong and sets me
straight
no longer narrow
but love wide
enough to fill the ocean
and capture the skies
since you came around
it's a new dawning
a new morning
a new beginning
a strong feeling
it's a perfect rhythm
style and fashion
of beauty
poise
and refined peace
it's love
in the highest sense
highest form
highest order
sent from above
Cloud love

Words

this is mind-blowing sex
yes I said sex
because you blow my mind
with your word sex
you are suave
slick, smooth
and sly
and I like you
like that
that sex
that makes me
quiver
with
just two words
'Hi Honey'
the opener
that opens my mind
to accept
your sex
O how I love
to hear you
speak
so direct
so street
so sweet
that
figurative words
can't contain
how I want to
literlly
love you
yes
and your
mind-blowing sex
is all I need to get me going

You have done it all

You have become my strength
Filling voids so deep and so expansive
That I feel so filled
So rich
And so complete

You release my inspiration
Making me more creative
More powerful
With more of a flow
That gives me the real high

You are my source of love
It’s not how I love you
It’s how I need you
You calm my fears
And more and more
Everyday
I need you near

The joy that you bring
Is intense
I’m so elated
And so enriched
With happiness
Every time you smile at me

I am now solidly happy
Strengthened
Inspired
Loving
Joyous
With these feelings you
You make me complete

Right & Just

Haiti has trembled, Port-au-Prince is crumbled and Haitians are in need of help. California's beaches are receding. The BVI's nasty little secrets of pollution, environmental degradation and lack of proper waste management practices are trickling to the big world.

Crime is everywhere. AIDS is everywhere. Cancer is striking both young and old. It seems to be a worldwide epidemic of global suffering.

CNN's cry is that the survivors of the earthquake have a harder fight in staying alive - water, food and medicine are what are needed.

As all the different issues go on in the world, I sit at home trying to figure out why there is no UNITY among us all. It appears that even in times of crises, we are divided. I cannot understand or fathom what the agenda - hidden or known might be. The only agenda for me right now is to do what is right and just!

POEM: What have I done?

What have I done to help the oppressed?
Have I ever said a good word to one who is depressed?
Do I behave like I am human when I am stressed?
Or do I act like I don't know people when I am dressed?
Up and down the road of life as each daily move brings us strife,
why can't we treat each other better?
Why should you be hungry while I get fatter?
Why should you always be first and then I am left behind for your laughter?
Will you smile in my face as your lies get more craftier?
Don't you think that you are your brother's keeper?
Don't you think that we should all be richer?
Are you focused only on material things?
Aren't you tired of dragging other people's purse strings?
Don't you think it's time to spread your wings?
Don't you know what showing love can bring?
Don't you know how a good deed can begin?
Do I need to lose for you to win?
Or can we all just forgive each other's sins?

Soca in Me Waist

I love SOCA music. It is so me, so Caribbean, so BVI, so cultural and so moving. You can speak about issues in a smart way while getting the populace to wine and basically exercise their cares away - without whining! Everyone knows I love a good play on words.

My children seem to love SOCA too. I find awesome videos on YouTube, like Claudette Peters, Alison Hinds, Peter Ram, Rupee, Kevin Lyttle. Of course, these are the artists that have been able to receive full Caribbean fame and some are internationally recognized as well.

In the past, I wanted to be a calypsonian but I'm not really a good enough singer to pull that off. I have a friend and fellow poet, April, who has that voice and that range to sing, sing and sing! She's definitely going to do many great things in her lifetime. Ribbon said it!

For me, SOCA is the best music to exercise to. I tried that Soulja Boy business, but I was out of breath. lol Of course, the children loved that music too. They are born into the generation of hyped yet lyrically empty music so I guess it is my job to ensure that they get a taste of examples of lyrically deep music.

I'm not saying that I have the greatest collection, but I do have some Luther Vandross, Bob Marley and Steel Pulse in my house - of course this is the music that I appreciate. If you have some Bach or Bon Jovi - that's all good too!

Whatever your taste - enjoy and appreciate it. I love my soca, reggae, gospel, R&B and Hip Hop but for keeping in shape - SOCA is the way!
